Kristy McNichol Comes Out As A Lesbian To Help Stop Bullying

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayInspirationLGBT

Good for her!

Actress Kristy McNichol has been out of the public for about 20 years, but she's bravely chosen to come out to try to help kids who are being bullied.

The Family and Empty Nest star decided to make an official statement about her sexuality not only because she is "approaching 50," but she wants to "be open about who I am" and "is very sad about kids being bullied."

Her rep says:

"She hopes that coming out can help kids who need support. She would like to help others who feel different.

She is very happy and healthy. And she enjoys living a very private life."

Kristy has lived with her partner Martie Allen for the past two decades and focuses on improving her health by doing yoga, playing tennis, traveling, and raising her miniature dachshunds.

It's great to hear that she's so happy and healthy - and what a wonderful message to country's youths who are struggling with being who they truly are.

We applaud Kristy for her brave statement, which will surely help others.

Kristy McNichol has been an out lesbian for decades. This isn't at all news. The most newsy item is that she's still around.

  2. 2

Little Darlings is the greatest movie EVER!!!! GO TEAM FARRAH!!!

  3. 3

How many times is she going to come out ????
She was one of the very first women on TV to come out, like 25-30 years ago
She talked about have a crush on co star Merridith Baxter Birney (came out last year)
As in the words of Ann Murray's song, Everything old is new again

  4. 4

She came out as a lesbian? I thought there was a chance she'd come out as a raptor.

  5. 5

Being gay has nothing to do with being bullied.

EVERYONE HAS BEEN BULLIED……gays do not own the corner market on bullying!

Besides no one cares about her…she has been irrelevant for decades.

  6. 6

Yep, it will get better now that Krusty McNichol has jumped on the bandwagon.

  7. 7

Holy Crap is she OLD LOOKING ! But, at least she is not bo-toxed up the ying-yang like some of these other pathetic HollyWeird people. And she looks WAAAAAAAAAAY better than that HoHan girl. Anyways, I though everyone always knew she was a carpet-muncher ? ! This is not news ……

  8. 8

Re: Lady Who? – LOL ! well….maybe for some 50- something closet case ! Don't thinks kids wanna be associated with old dykes …Just say'n !

  9. 9

Since when did she get that nice rack?? She was always built like a small asian boy.
She came out when Rock Hudson had AIDS in the 80's…
So glad to see her do it again… not.

  10. 10

She came out years ago! I guess she's trying to get her name in the news…not that there's anything wrong with that.

  11. 11

Re: JM – well, I didn't know so it's news to me.

  12. 12

Sorry, some 50 year old lady coming out is not gonna help a teenager getting bullied. She's doing this for her own selfish reasons

  13. 13

She looks like that senator that got shot

  14. 14

Good for Christy but the only thing surprising or eye opening about this , she is 50??? We all knew she was gay from the get go. Noone ever thought less , she was an excellent actress. 70' icon for sure.

  15. 15

That's been an open "secret" for years. I like Kristy. Good actress. Wish she would return to acting.

  16. 16

This is not news. I can't even remember when I didn't know she was a lesbian. Yes, brave telling everyone !

  17. 17

Good for her - that's not easy

  18. 18

This was an open secret for years. If she were REALLY brave she'd have done it while she was still relevant in Hollywood. Doing it now sounds as though she is just looking for attention and maybe to get her foot in the celebrity door. I also agree with the above poster; kids of all sizes, shapes, colors, etc. get bullied, not just those who are gay or lesbian.

  19. 19

Grew up with her! always loved her, I wish she's act again

  20. 20

Re: Be-Atch – Wow, she got old just like EVERYONE DOES

  21. 21

She looks like she should be working at the local library…or as a gym teacher !

  22. 22

You could always tell she was a dyke…'memba when she played the 'Buddy” character on the t.v. show FAMILY ? Even her character came off as a young lezbo. Perfect casting !

  23. 23

'Memba she had a break-down in the 80's …? Probably dealing with her sexuality. She went on to become a make-up artist, at one point. Probably was abused by a lot of dirty old producers/writers/actors. It is quite common in her line of work. No morals in that town !

  24. 24

Re: NorthernLala – Some people age well… she has not. However, glad she is not a FREEAK SHOW like Demi Whore, etc. I gave her 'props' !

  25. 25

kids have no idea who she is or was or why she used to be famous. ZZzzzzz

  26. 26

She sorta looks like Annete Benning in this picture. (Warren Beatty's wife)

  27. 27

    "Comes Out?

We knew she was a bull-dyke when she player that little boy on that show "Family"

  28. 28

No shock there. I knew she was a lesbian when she was on "Family" and "Little Darlings."

  29. 29

Lesbian activist and biologist Dr. Anne Fausto-Sterling, referring to the "born gay" argument, said: "It provides a legal argument that is, at the moment actually having some sway in court. For me, it's a very shaky place. It's bad science and bad politics."

  30. 30

Lesbian activist Camille Paglia said: "Homosexuality is not 'normal.' On the contrary it is a challenge to the norm…Nature exists whether academics like it or not. And in nature, procreation is the single relentless rule. That is the norm. Our sexual bodies were designed for reproduction…No one is born gay. The idea is ridiculous…"

  31. 31

Author and AIDS victim Jerry Arterburn said: "I was involved in the homosexual world as a blatant attempt to obtain the affection from other men that I did not receive from my own father." Due to his sensitive nature, he was more deeply affected than most boys when his own father rejected him early in life. Without a loving father figure, he yearned for affection from other boys by the age of six. His yearning became sexualized at puberty. He said being abused or severely neglected in childhood was "too common a thread to ignore" in the gay community and his female mannerisms were due to his mother, his only role model. He was NOT born gay. But he was saved and transformed, just as the Bible promises all of us, whether gay or straight, as we submit to Christ by repentance and faith.

  32. 32

Being supportive of the basic civil rights of gays and lesbians does not require a belief in the false notion that people are born gay.

They are not. Homosexuality is caused by emotional trauma - from childhood neglect, abuse, or any number of other traumatic causes.

If we love someone, we want to see them healed from the trauma, not married.

In the Netherlands where gay marriage has been accepted for quite awhile now, has seen no decrease in gay suicide - in fact, some studies show an increase.

If you do not promote healing and choose to ignore it for your own selfish reasons, their blood is on your hands.

  33. 33

Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA 2009)

"One half of the victims…often linked their homosexuality to their sexual victimization experiences."

"The age at the time of the molestation ranged from 4 to 16 with a mean age of 10."

In homosexual men ther appears to be a disconnect between them and their fathers as well as an overconnect with them and their mothers…there is the perception of the father being distant, uninvolved…"

  34. 34

Re: truelgbt – You mean Perez is a straight man trapped in homosexuality because he travels everywhere with his mother, but she is kind of dykish….

  35. 35

Um, didn't she come out like 20 years ago? That has to be the worst kept secret in Hollywood.

  36. 36

Always liked KRiSTY, still do !!

  37. 37

Hey Kristy … my mom used to refer to you as the little dyke actress in Family, and that was over 3 decades ago. So, did you actually know you were a dyke back then, or did the whole world know before you did ?

  38. 38

    She came out YEARS ago…duh.

  39. 39

Re: justinholt123 – I just watched Little Darlings last night! it WAS a great movie ..did you know that the kid with the long blond hair is Cynthia Nixon? Yep..that movie produced a whole bunch of lesbians lol

  40. Bevi says – reply to this

Yeah, really she came out ages and ages ago. Did she forget that she came out and that is why she is coming out again? I also agree with the bullying thing… I am not gay but have been bullied relentlessly as a child. They just have to have someone to pick on and I was the one. They sense you have a weakness and they attack. Predators that they are.

  41. 41

Brave? Is this what passes as Brave nowadays? Good golly, America, we used to be a nation of moon walking bad asses. WTF has happened to us?

  42. 42

Her being a lesbian is not really new news. It is also not really brave. She has not really acted in over 10 years or so. If she made this statement a long time ago then made be she would have been brave.

  43. 43

Kristy has been out for years…and years…
news maybe to Mario but most eeryone else has heard her speak of it
since she leads a relatively normal life not seeking the limelight all the time like some do, you really don't see her in the tabloids any more…….so Mario misssed the scoop…guess that's what happens when you get your news from the gossip rags, isn't it Mario?

  44. 44

    Gee, thats a big surprise.

  45. 45

I don't know who she is but CONGRATS! :)

  46. 46

I've knoiwn this about Kristy for years. I was bullied all thru school by the same type of guys. I was never bullied on a one on one basis. It was always as a group of 3-5 guys at a time. I did fight back at times and did put a kid in the hospital for about 2 weeks with a concussion. Those guys didn't bother me again. I also took up for those others being bullied. I've been out of high school since 1984 and have gone further and done more things than the bullies. I'm now friends with some of them and they've apologized too.

  47. 47

  48. 48

What would she know about being bullied? She was a coddled TV star by the time she was 10. As for being a lesbian - I didnt know that was ever a secret.

  49. 49

    …oh, she needs money……grab that spotlight while u can………

  50. 50

Good for her! Visibility will hopefully lead to more tolerance and acceptance (for those who are ignorant and have issues for whatever non-legit reason). Gays are everywhere people, just like straights…get used to it! Equality for all.

  51. 51

I knew she was a lesbian from the time she played "Buddy" on Family! Gee, what was my first clue?

  52. 52

I wish Kristy would have Come-Out as a Giraffe; at least it would have ACTUALLY shocked people!

  53. 53

She can look giraffe-like ! Bet when she goes down on her lezzzzzzzzzzzzzzbeen lover, her neck is all over that furry carpet ! Gruuf !

  54. 54

I'd like to come out as a fat girl to protect other fat girls from bullying. Seriously? Being a has-been that most kids today will never know, and couldn't care less about, you're a bit of a Hollywood recluse and you decide when you're close to the ripe old age of 50 to come out? Wow that takes bravery, I'm sure less children will be bullied because of your bravery! Captain Obvious says "Thanks for sharing Kristy, but we kinda already knew.", now if Megan Fox or somebody young and attractive came out, that would be different. No offense of course…

  55. 55

Who are we kidding, we knew she was queer 25 years ago. What's the big surprise?

  56. 56

Re: THEKNOTTYMAN – You didn't say whether you where bullied because you were gay or not, which may or may not have been the case. The best thing anyone can do is to buckle down and figure out what it takes to "over-achieve beyond the bully-losers. And then savor the victory…

  57. 57

Kristy McWHO? She has been out of the limelight for about 25 years. I knew she was lesbian, probably before she did!

  58. 58

Re: hereisnow – Good post ! It is getting excessive, all this talk.

  59. 59

She lloks like she has Bell's Palsy in this phot=o !

    Reply to Meggie 246524:
You seem to be the elephant in the room!
Kristy was the last person to know that she is gay.
