Oh, Sony! What are you doing to us?! What are you doing???
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remains on everyone's radar and while it may not have been the box-office smash that the studio was hoping for, they have already given the green-light to start pre-production the films two sequels. No doubt Sony sees the longterm financial reward of completing the entire series, but if sources on the inside are correct, there could be one MAJOR problem with getting these films off the ground:
Director David Fincher is already busy.
The gameplan over at Sony is to get The Girl Who Played With Fire in theaters for Christmas 2013, but by that time, Dave is sure to be waste deep in post for 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, which starts production in the fall of 2012. Since Dave is NOT under contract like Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, his priorities can be whatever he wants — and he wants to dive into this great script by Andrew Kevin Walker and bring Captain Nemo back to the big screen.
Now, that isn't to say that he doesn't also want to work on the next two films of the trilogy, but the choice is up to Sony. Do they wait to make sure they get the right man for the job, or do they jump while the iron is hot and punch out the next few films to bank on the franchise's fan base.
The decision is theirs; they should choose wisely!
