Oprah Makes Joel Osteen Admit That He Thinks Homosexuality Is A Sin

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayOprah WinfreyLGBT

Oh, but good news! The good pastor says despite being sinners, the gays will be welcomed into heaven with open arms … once they admit fault for their "sin," of course.

What a guy, huh? Such understanding.

On Sunday night's episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter, The Big O sat down for a controversial interview with Pastor Joel Osteen. You might know him best as the guy who packs stadiums (not churches — stadiums), with people who come to listen to his uplifting messages of faith and hope. Joel has made quite a name — and quite a fortune — out of being a "positive" force and voice for Christianity, but leave it to Oprah to find the loop hole in his belief system.

During her interview, she point blank posed the question about homosexuality being a sin and pressed Joel for his stance on the topic. He assured her that in his point of view, as dictated by the bible, being gay is most definitely a "clear" sin. However, he quickly added that he also believes gay people will be welcomed into heaven and FORGIVEN for their "sin" on Earth. So, you know, alls well that ends well.

You can check out the interview (above) to hear Joel explain his opinion further, but what you should really pay attention to is the opulence he is surrounded by while he spews his ignorance. How ironic we find it that a man of such indelible faith can criticize others for their "sins" while he sits there in his mega-mansion. You know, the money you spent on that piano there buddy could have probably fed and clothes a good, poor, Christian family for a year. Maybe that's something you might like to think about.

No one gives a rat's ass about your gay agenda. Yes, we understand it's the most important issue in the world to you, but stfu already.

  2. 2

when is oprah gonna come out? everyone knows she's a muff diver.

  3. 3

I am of the Christian faith and actually sporadically attend Lakewood church when I can. Pastor Joel Osteen is a great man of faith, and yes he believes that being gay is a sin. Now not all Christians believe this; I myself believe that homosexuality is ok. However, just because Joel Osteen believes homosexuality is a sin doesn't mean that he is ignorant or a bad person. Different people believe different things and that's ok. He has never been demeaning about his beliefs and his faith, and I find it ironic how you are demeaning him in this post. He is simply stating his beliefs.

  4. 4

As for the church he runs and his home, he has made his money off of books and things outside of donations to the church. Joel Osteen and his family use all of the money given to the church (sent in, donations, offerings) to specific things (mission trips, renovations to the church, etc.), not to himself nor his family. Also, this church has grown so much because Joel Osteen and his father before him (Pastor John Osteen) have made Lakewood a home and a safe place for all kinds of people. John Osteen built this church from the ground up, and they have never taken offerings given to the church and spent it on themselves. That is how they went from holding Lakewood in a small barn with a handful of people, to moving into a stadium.

If you are ever in Houston, TX I offer you to visit Lakewood Church and meet Joel Osteen. He takes time after every one of his ministries to meet anyone that is visiting the church. I assure you that he would welcome you with open and loving arms.

Hate the sin not the sinner…

The REAL reason not to watch this dude is the fact that he's NOT a Christian and preaches that we should pray for financial gain! Simply disgusting.

  7. 7

Super fancy that you credit yourself as a worthy judge of character, but are pissed off that he's got an opinion about a LIFESTYLE. He never said gays were bad people, but it's great that you were so quick to imply he isn't because he doesn't agree with your agenda.

Real Christians hate the sin, not the sinner, and YES, a lot of them believe homosexuality is a sin. That doesn't make them a bad person. Welcome to the US, where we're free to have our opinions. How about YOUR understanding for a person with a lifestyle that differs from your own? Wtg on the bullying thing - nice to know you only think anti-bullying extends to gay kids, and not the Christian ones…since their beliefs make them such bad people. Douche.

  8. 8

Re: CrackaJack – HE IS NOT A CHRISTIAN!!! He NEVER states that JESUS died for our sins. You are foolish and blind if you believe that dude isn't spending his congregation's money - he's no different from every other fake televangelist. Go to a REAL church and confess your sins, because Lakewood is NOT a real church…it's a TV Show!

  9. 9

There's a lot of money to be made in the name of God! Don't trust any of them as much as I don't trust a politician!!!

Osteen did not even go to seminary. He is uneducated on what the bible really says about homosexuality. He should study with ministers like Rev. Ed Bacon or Rev. Michael Beckwith. There are ministers with far more education and experinece then Osteen who totally disagree with his opinion. He preaches a dangerous form of christianity that is shaming our young LGBT loved ones into suicide. Thank GOD for the Christians like myself who KNOW how misguided he is! I will continue to pray for his enlightenment!

  11. 11

He seems like a really happy guy. Conning thousands of people out of their hard earned money by selling them 'hope' must be the reason for his smile.Re: krtmom – I agree - he is simply selling people what they want to hear - as for what Osteen's faith really is - only he knows that, all he shows us is a well rehearsed routine.

  12. 12

Well I think insincerity is a sin (fuck, the word even has sin in it) and he's a huge offender. If you think me being gay is equivalent to being a liar or arrogant than you view me as a perpetual, constant affront to Christ and God, an objector to morality. Obviously he sets conditions on love and just isn't man enough to admit it. Get over it, your human, not the messenger of God's word- no is because we're all MORTAL. You can strive to be like Christ but it doesn't make you, by definition, Christ-like…rather, a Christ fan.

  13. 13

Re: highboo – I attended this church on and off for the past 17 years. It is a real church. If you ever visit it, you could find out.

  14. 14

Joel is a great guy. He is not one to judge people… I thought he handled his opion very well.

  15. 15

#3 - No, Osteen isn't stating HIS opinion. He's telling his congregation (& Oprah) how GOD feels about homosexuality.

  16. 16

Re: PM2901 – His opinion on the interpretation of the Bible. So yes, his opinion.

  17. 17

#4 - "a safe place for all kinds of people"? You forgot to say, "EXCEPT HOMOS." And, with regard to what he and his wife spends the donations on. . .until you've seen his tax returns, you have no idea what they spend that $$ on. You're just reguritating what he says.

  18. 18

Don't you just love how these bigots pull obscure passages out of the bible to justify discrimination? Here's one for you Joel, Jesus said, "a camel can walk through the eye of a needle easier than a rich man can get into heaven".

I saw the interview. He did not say one disparaging remark about the gay community, nor does he personally have a problem with gay people. His answer was based on what the Bible says, as a Christian, that is what he lives by, and he is entitled to do so. He does not receive compensation from the church, rather he lives off the money he makes by his book sales. It doesn't matter that Mother Theresa lived in poverty, nowhere in the Bible says that we should. God wants the BEST for us, and to live abundantly. He is not vulgar with money, he lives well, as he should as a child of God. Just because he very respectfully has a different opinion doesn't mean he deserves to called names or disrespected. Agree to disagree.

  20. 20

#18 - Amen! These delusional followers of men are exhausting. That's why I left the church years ago. I believe in God. I'm spiritual. A lot of these folks dazzled by Osteen are misled and make me sick.

  21. 21

While I respectfully disagree with his opinion, I do appreciate the respectful way he answered the question. I have no problem that he made his money off his book sales, I wish him success in his ministry to whomever wishes to celebrate God in his church and I sincerely hope he meant it when he said that he " is not against anyone". It was a mature discussion.

  22. 22

He is right, according to the bible, homosexual activity is sin. Whether or not this is logical, is another thing.

  23. 23

Re: PM2901 – He nor his family have ever claimed this. Every offering is tracked electronically (by numbers) and each person actually gets to see where their offering goes. I know because I attended this church for a long time regularly.

  24. mre says – reply to this

Re: rosebud99 – You need to understand this in the context in which it was written. That was directed to "lovers of money". There is a big difference between having money, and money having you. Joel Osteen has money, money isn't his God. Christians are supposed to live well, he makes his own money, taking nothing from the church. And again, as a Christian, he has to base his beliefs on the knowledge he has attained from the Bible. He does not have a personal issue with people being gay. I am a Christian, I have NO problem with gay people. God loves everyone regardless, that doesn't mean it's not a sin if you are basing your beliefs on what the Bible tells us. The difference is, I am not God, nor is Joel Osteen or any other Christian, and we are not to judge anyone, and he did not. He was simply stating his belief.

no way those lips have never tasted peen. Just saying.

  26. 26

    Re: mre – Thank you

  27. 27

What did you expect him to say? He is a preacher, and most churches do not even like to acknowledge that homosexuality takes place. AT least he had the decency to say that EVERYONE sins, gay or straight, and that being gay is no worse than having too much pride or being too greedy. He said a sin is a sin, no matter what the sin is. I think you should research your information a little better and try harder to print the whole story and not just what you took as offensive. Not everyone is going to have the same beliefs but he obviously doesn't believe in bullying or being cruel, so let's be thankful for that.

  28. 28

The bible is pretty clear what are sins and not. Sleeping with someone before you are married, lying, wanting something that is not yours (coveting). That does not make him ignorant. It makes him a believer in the bible. Now if you do bot agree, than you don't agree. It does not make him hateful either. The bible also says that if anyone repeants from whatever sin they are committing and believe in Christ Jesus as their savior that they will be permitted to heaven. One will no more not get into heaven for being doing those other things God says are sins as the other. That just makes his belief differ from yours. Can you imagine for one second that GOd actually says that? THen what? I think it is important to remember that for someone believing that GOd is the truth does not mean that they themselves are not compassionate with the lives of others. But it is not our job to be hateful, just to say what it says, and then leave it alone. It is the other persons decision to believe it or not. I have noticed that 95% of people believe in the ideals of at least the New Testament, but when it comes to something tht they are a member of or participate in, it make the person who believes in all of the bible hateful?? SO what if God really said that homosexuality was a sin, and his believers just believe him? would nt that make GOd Terrible? Or just? Considering he is God and he does not have to explain why he commands such things to the likes of us. Just saying

  29. 29

this surprises you?? what did you expect?? ofart didn't uncover shit. it's not like he tried to cover something up. you're a PUNK PEEREX

  30. 30

You have a disagreement. Though it doesn't mean what you believe, is what others should conform too…

Joel Osteen, just pointed out that it IS written in The Holy Bible, that being homophobic IS a sin, according to the Bible. The scripture is in every single bible. Read the bible…Read the scripture…

Just read The whole Bible, and not just pick and choose, what YOU can relate too!

    Solution > Instigation

  31. 31

I think it's a sin to preach the word of God and Jesus and use it to make millions of dollars. I think that's kinda against the whole message of Jesus. ……just sayin'

  32. 32

UM how much do you donate to "a good, poor" gay family?? come on ass wipe.. ADMIT THE AMOUNT IS ZERO

  33. 33

Re: mre – Sorry, you are arguing semantics. And judging by the way he lives, kinda looks like money IS his god.

  34. 34

Just wait and watch…money and riches will go to this guys head…he'll be the next Jim Baker, just wait and see

  35. 35

Re: lexxii – I thought the same thing.

  36. 36

To be clear, he does not spew "ignorance." He is quite knowledgeable about the Bible and his faith; therefore, he is not ignorant. His faith system does state that homosexuality is sin. You may not agree with him; many of us do not. But your rhetoric against him is a lot more ignorant than what he says of his belief system.

  37. 37

he's either a great guy who's dong the lord's work, or just a guy who's really successfull at cashing in on something that has never been proven. either way, a lot of the people who are into his religion would be bigger tools without following his beliefs, even if they are pretend.

  38. 38

isn't the work of fiction known as the bible actually 66 books written by like 40 different people. you know "people" not some "god". it always amuses me how so many people pick and choose what they want to believe and follow from the bible. so hypocritical. oh i like the part about homo's being sinners but not so much the part about slavery or not working on sundays. ect, ect…. of course osteen is going to say being gay is a sin. heaven forbid he upset the lemmings who follow him and cause the cash flow from coming in. it's just sad that the gay children of the people who idolize this man have to once again hear that they are sinners just for being who they are.
"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

  39. 39

Regardless of his take on homosexuality, it is rather amazing how the selling of God is never very far away from gilt chandeliers and tacked blonde wives kept in Bentleys and 20,000sq homes.

  40. 40

this is not news. the man preaches and believes what is in the bible. and the bible says it is a sin. did u want him to go against his beliefs to be politically correct? nice to see someone who is not swayed by money or fame. our whole world is full of nothing but sinners, including myself. i admit my sins, but they donyt include taking it in thecaboooooose.

Re: rosebud99 – Not arguing symantics AT ALL. I tried to make it as clear as I could. (I'm not being condesending, btw). It's all in the way you interpret it. You know how you can send an email, and it can be interpreted as rude, when if you had said it on the phone, it would come across entirely different? Same thing. Christians, or non Christians for that matter, should aspire to be and have the best. There is absolutely nothing wrong with living well, and having nice things, NOTHING. As long as your money and possesions don't have you. There is a huge difference. Joel Osteen absolutely lives well, as he should, but he doesn't have 100 cars in the garage, his wife is not dripping in jewels, they are not vulgar in what they have which shows me, money is not their God. Money doesn't make their world go round. I can't explain in any better than that. If you still believe otherwise, that's cool too. My point was just that there is nothing wrong with living well for him or anyone else as long as you put God first, which he does.

Re: Adorable Kevy – It isn't "his take" on homosexuality, it's what the Bible says, and that's the path he has chosen for his life. He wasn't disparaging. He is not against gays. Their house is not 20,000 sq. feet, by the way, nor is wife "tacky" she carries herself like a lady and is appropriate in every way. Just because people have a different belief system doesn't mean they are bad people. I don't get why he is the source of so much contempt just because he chooses to believe something different than you do. Live and let live, right?

  43. 43

He's entitled to his opinion. Get over it.

  44. 44

yes and how ironic that she had tyler perry there with her—he left before the main interview, to hugs from joel and his wife!

tyler you're a sinner but thank the lord that you were with oprah cuz thats the only way you'd be let in their house!

  45. 45

I think people have the right to believe whatever they want as long as they don't project their beliefs on me. I think being gay is like being straight, no difference, no sin. But I'm not going to sit here and bash this guy because he thinks differently from me and neither should anyone else. Because really you're doing the same thing that he is: hating his belief system while he hates yours.
And let's be honest here, people, most Christians hate the sin and the sinner. That's why people get beat up and killed for being gay because if they just were against the gay part of the person then they wouldn't hurt/kill the whole person.

  46. 46

Re: mre – And what I am saying is that due there being multiple versions and translations of the bible, just about any point of view can be found there, but people like Osteen pick and choose what they consider sin. And saying 'they have wealth, wealth doesn't have them is definitely semantics. And that interpretation, in my mind, is just a little too convenient.

  47. 47

Dont be a fascist. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

  48. mre says – reply to this

Re: amsmagoo – aww, seriously, please don't believe that. We are ALL sinners, straight, gay, or whatever. God hates the sin NOT the sinner. If he hated the sinner we'd all be in trouble. Those who beat and kill gay people are certainly not Christian!! Please don't lump us in with murderers. I am a Christian, born and raised. I have absolutely no problem with gay people, never have, never will. I wasn't taught to hate anyone. I have close gay friends, I have gay relatives. Do I believe it is a sin? I would have to if I believe what the Bible says and I do. BUT, I do not have the right or desire to judge or persacute anyone due to their life choices, as I wouldn't want anyone to do that to me. Being a Christian, doesn't automatically make you a bigot, or a homophobe. Sin is sin in God's eyes, and we are all sinners. I do have to say that majority of the gay people that post make the most disparaging remarks, yet they, most of all Perez get upset simply when someone disagrees with their lifestyle. You have to give respect to get it, and never once in my life have ever made a disparaging remark about a gay person. I've never used a gay slur. I say live and let live. Respect everyone.

  49. mre says – reply to this

Re: rosebud99 – He, nor anyone else can "pick or choose" what sin to believe or not believe in. It's there in black in white regardless of what translation you read. You have to believe in all or none. That being said, it's pretty clear to me that you are bound and determined to not have an open mind about what I was trying to explain, so I will stop here. I love God, I love being a Christian, and when I read things that are not a true and accurate assesment of what the true picture is, I feel compelled to explain it but I'm not going to force my views on anyone. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Thanks.

  51. 51

Re: mre – I agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I do respect yours. And I appreciate your polite conversation. Thank you, and cheers.

  52. 52

Whether you think being gay is a sin or not a sin,
the Bible blatantly states that it is a sin like over 10 times.
Can't really change that or deny it…but it's not right for you or anyone else to judge how not "understanding" Joel is towards gay people.
& it's pretty offensive that you would judge his lifestyle and claim that he doesn't help Christian families. How do you know that? You don't. He claims to have been and is now a sponsor to children living in poverty in other countries and he dedicates a portion of his tour to working with WorldVision to get the message out so that people can make a donation.
I saw him speak in the Seattle area and he delivers a great, encouraging message.
Sorry, but your argument makes no sense, especially since you start out talking about how he thinks being gay is a sin and then you just switch to bashing him over money. What does that have to do with it? I've always liked this website once it turned more positive but this is just a sad step in the wrong direction Perez. You need to do a little more research before you can make your arguments reasonable instead of arguments based on hate and judgment.

ugh…can't stans the so called "christians" that talk out of both sides of their mouth. the bible emphasizes LOVE for all…that is the overwhelming theme..

  54. 54

well Perez.. being gay is a sin… just like pre martial sex… but you don't see me getting mad at that. I feel, your to defensive about your sexuality.. accept that some people recognize it as a sin, and get over it. Also, saying Joel is, "ignorant" for it, is ridiculous. I guess most of America and Christians are "ignorant", huh?

  55. 55

the man is merely stating an interpretation of the holy bible…an interpretation that hundreds of thousands of other Christians have also concluded. Tell me which version of the Holy Bible you are reading that says anything to contrary??? geeze leave the guy alone. He is entitled to his beleifs and as I see it the word of God bends for no man…no matter how deplorable we may think that finding homosexuality a sin is…that is the light and the truth of the matter one cannot change the words in that timeless book. So deal with it.

Re: rosebud99 – I like you, Rosebud…lol!! We clearly have vast differences in our belief system, but I can appreciate ANYONE who can disagree without being nasty or name calling.

  57. 57

Oh get over yourself @Perez, it is a sin to be homosexual. If you don't repent you'll see the Lake of Fire in the end. It's as simple as that! Read the Bible bud.

  58. 58

Re: ccmyplaymate – you speak the truth, and no one can get around it in the end. they are going to hell if not foregiven before its too late!

  59. 59

Re: mre – Actually I typed Stacked (not tacky). As often happens with PH comments box, you really have to press HARD on a key or else it misses some letters. Lots of typos. And it would be Osteen's take on the subject of homosexuality since others would have a different take on the subject. And you must admit that he plays both sides of the fence by saying homosexuality is a sin (one interpretation of the Bible although not word on the subject is ever mentioned by JESUS or in the Gospels). But his other PERSONAL take on the subject would be that homosexuals will go to Heaven and be forgiven. Its NICE both sides of the fence statement but Osteen doesn't REALLY KNOW that, does he? And its at odds with most other Christian ministers, etc. Many condemn homosexuality as a sin AND as something guaranteeing one Hell. So again, its all HIS personal take, in the end, which he shared with Oprah.

  60. 60

  61. 61

Joel Osteen makes sooooooo much money from his oh so devoted church goers, But what's the difference between him and some dude on a soap box. I personally believe he and his whole church is a sham, Just so he can make as much money as he can. But what does he do for the community!?! Oh and i heard that his wife bitch slapped a flight attendant !!!! OOooohh gurl !! but i regress He's Fake and I think its total BULL SHIT he thinks homosexuality is a sin!!!

  62. 62

Re: Kenzieee – The only agenda here is homophobia. If you have the right to marry and want to keep it from me, then that's your agenda, not mine.

  63. 63

Re: Miamimama – How about we just stop hating all together and learn to live in peace? The gays certainly don't hate your lifestyle because you're different, now why is it okay for you to hate theirs?

  64. 64

The Bible does clearly state in the Old & New Testaments that homosexuality is in fact a sin!!! But I think what Joel was trying to get across is we all sin in some form or another and fall short. What I find funny are the "Christians" stating that since Joel didn't go to seminary he shouldn't be a preacher? This man at the end of every program says the prayer all people that come to the Lord say, so there is his belief that Jesus is our Lord & Savior. This man has brought so many people to Christ that I don't believe God cares if he has a "formal" education! As far as what this man has financially he has at least 5 Best Sellers so why wouldn't he have nice things? He still does more for the less fortunate than most. He also does preach that we are favored and annointed and therefore God wants to give us wonderful gifts and blessings & that there is nothing greater than the Lords favor whether that is for financial, spiritual, relationships or health. What is wrong with this man telling you that your father wants to give you prosperity or a clean bill of health or a happy marriage or a closer relationship with God? So if you sinful people know how to give gifts to your children how much more will your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him Luke 11:13

  65. 65

at the end of every broadcast he says the prayer for others to accept Jesus into their heart as their Lord and Savior so you comment is without merit! Also it may be broadcasted but Lakewood is an actual church so your other point is moot!

  66. 66

Re: Jildo! – It's a sad day for this country when it is considered a courtesy to the gay community when Christians decide to hate the sin and not the sinner. I'm sorry, but that's just not good enough. Why can't we just stop hating all together? Is that so hard to ask? My homosexuality doesn't affect you, but your Christianity is affecting me when you constantly vote against my rights and declare that it's okay to hate my lifestyle. The world doesn't have to be christians vs homosexuals, and if you would stop using the bible as a weapon against the happiness of homosexuals, maybe it it wouldn't be. After all, the Christian thing to do would be just to love the person all together. Ask yourself how different your life would be if you just let me live mine without your disgust. It wouldn't.

  67. 67

Re: annam – The ministers your referring to must not read their Bibles because it clearly states at least 4 different times that homosexuality is a sin. So anyone teaching the word of God & is saying that the Bible does not say it is a sin… Well they have their own sin to worry about since teachers of the word face a whole different level of punishment for their false teachings!!!!!

  68. 68

Re: joethehobo – I don't think any of the christians on her disrespected or hated any sinners! Wanna know why? Because we are all sinners! Joel Osteen, myself and anybody for that matter may know something is a sin due to what the bible says (yes all of it not just the parts we like or don't like) but we have no right to judge for those sins. That is not anyones job but God. We are to treat everyone with love & compassion.

  69. 69

I love Joel Osteen because his sermons are positive and uplifting. And what would you expect from someone in his position? At least he's not spewing hate and ignorance. He's simply stating what he believes. We are all entitled to our opinion. Just like I can be all for gay marriage and still find Joel Osteen to be inspirational.

  70. 70

I think it's interesting how everyone is so inclined to believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Apparently declaring homosexuality as a sin is fine, it's just his opinion. Now imagine if someone said that they hate black people. Or Jews? Doesn't that bother you? The fact is is that homosexuality is a relatively newer issue to this country than race, and hopefully the next generation will see homophobia as being just as disgusting as the way we see racism.
I am in no way insinuating that Mr. Olsteen is a racist or homophobe. He seems like a man who genuinely wants the world to be a better place. I'm just tired of people using the bible as a weapon, whether it be against my right to marry, my right to adopt, or even the right to live my life with the person I love. Why are we so comfortable with the phrase "hate the sin, not the sinner?" Instead of using the bible to try and justify why you hate someone or their lifestyle, why not just stop the hate all together? Showing your disgust for something will not make it easier for you to get into heaven. If the idea of two people in love disgusts you, then I think your morality is in question and not theirs. The fact is is that homosexuality doesn't affect you, and if you truly believe in a God that would punish two people who are in love because of the way he made them, then I feel sorry for you.

Re: joethehobo – The phrase about not hating the sinner, but the sin, is not exclusive to being gay to those who believe that is a sin. It's about ANYTHING that God considers a sin. For those who believe homosexuality is a sin, it should be no different to them than being an adulterer, a fornicater, thief, etc. God only specifies one "sin" being worse than any other, the bible says, "God hates a LIAR". I have not found one instance where it says the God hates homosexual's because he doesn't. I am a Christian, I am not God, and am a sinner myself, so I have no room to judge anyone. I have no personal problem with who anyone chooses to love or not. No one has to answer to me at the end. So if someone is judging you on your life, and who you choose to love, I suggest you take it up with the specific person or group, etc. and not make a blanket statement. I have to believe what the bible teaches but that doesn't mean I don't think gay people should be treated any differently. EVERYONE is deserving of God's love, not just straight people, the very thought of anything other than that is nothing but ignorance.

Re: mre – I'm not lumping the extremists together with the normal people, trust me. I grew up Catholic and left because I differ with a lot of the belief system that, not just Catholics but Christians, in general, hold. However, when I see "Christians" protesting and using homophobic slurs, that is hating the sinner. They are actually calling people hurtful names because of a sin. God does not hate the sinner nor does he hate the sin because God isn't capable of hate. By no means am I saying we aren't all guilty of wrongdoing because we are. People should be allowed to believe what they want without being ridiculed. I will never say anything mean about another's opinion because I have no right to do so.

Re: amsmagoo – I absolutely agree, and anyone using slurs and "protesting in the name of God" are not Christians. They are lunatics all on their own with an agenda that has nothing to do with being a Christian.

Perez, Joel Osteen is not "criticizing" homosexuality, or putting anyone down for being gay. He is merely referring to the bible which states that homosexuality is a sin. I know it is hard to hear that…..and it doesn't always make sense to me either (and I am a Christian woman.) I mean, what my idea of a "sin" is and what GOD says, doesn't always add up. It is not easy for me to hear that I am a sinner, say, if I have sex before marriage(and I have.) But, I am. Or that the little tiny white lie that I told today is a sin….(because everyone tells one now and again, right? It's no big deal.) But…it is! Sometimes it is hard for me to reconcile the fact that there is no difference between someone who is a murderer…or a liar. That in God's eyes, a sin is a sin, big or small. No, that doesn't make any sense to ME. But, the truth is, we ALL sin (especially this girl right here.) So, we are ALL guilty. Everyone of us……..

  75. 75

But thank God there is a deliverer, Jesus Christ, who paid the price for our sins! He died so that ALL of us may be forgiven of our sins if we believe in him and follow him. Jesus didn't die so that we would all argue about who is the worse person on this earth. According to the laws of Moses, without Jesus we would all be a lost cause. Look, I don't always "agree" with God's ways. I don't always understand…but I trust him. Why? For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are his ways higher than our ways, and his thoughts than our thoughts. Isaiah 55:9 Think about it: He loves us SO much that he sent his only son to DIE on a cross to pay for OUR sins! That's some crazy love right there. He did that…. for you Perez. Because he loves you that much. I'm so sorry if ANYONE in the christian community has made you feel as if you are in some way not worthy of GOD'S love. YOU are. Along with the rest of the gay community. God loves you SO much, each and every one of you. I pray that you would feel the love that Jesus has for you, right now, and that you would take a moment to just talk to him. Just pour your heart out to him. Don't worry about what to say. He understands your heart. Because he is there, waiting with open arms to hear from you and love you. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3.16

There goes gays thinking they are so special to the point they can argue with a several thousand year old book and religion. It's laughable. In the bible it says being gay is a sin. Christianity believes that being gay is a sin. You cannot argue it. You're not special enough to get something as old as Christianity to change just to accommodate you.

Thank you Highboo. I know. Does he have to have a expensive piano like that? Mother Teresa asked a business man one day, May I ask you what you paid for your sweater? He said 80 dollars. She said What if you paid 40 and give 40 to the poor? Still have a nice sweater and give to the poor. Joel Osteen's ministry is what the Bible calls "Ear tickling". He is just preaching what the people want to hear. You don't hear a run down of the 10 commandments, hell, and if you don't recieve Jesus as your Lord and Savior you will go to Hell on Judgement day. 180movie.com

Perez, you are the ignorant one. IT IS A SIN! He is just saying that if you repent, you can be forgiven & accepted into heaven. Take a look at your own lifestyle, I am sure you live pretty well yourself!!!!!

  79. 79

Re: Jildo! – Thank you for addressing the issue! Perez trashes people who have a different view of certain topics other than his own. He is being a BULLY. Just because you don't believe homosexuality is right doesn't make you a bad person. Just like Perez voices his opinion everybody should be entitled to without being talked down upon.

  80. 80

This is, quite honestly, the exact and accurate interpretation of homosexuality according to the Bible. Sorry if you can't take it, but I guess conventional Christianity isn't for you then.

  81. 81

Perezito…if you think about it, he is really just following what the "Bible" considers a sin. But being gay is no bigger sin than stealing, envying, lying, or any other type of sin. We are all born sinners per the "bible".

I attended Lakewood fo a year. What I liked was he preaches positiveness and the relationship to god. I've never heard him speak much about sin, the devil or damnation. It is over all a positive, uplifting experience to attend. What I found distastful after attending was I realized I was attending a mega-church. They receive millions of dollars a year. Reports show he makes an absurd amount of money. I recall in "mass" one day he spoke of all the super fancy equipment in his personal gym. He's making mega bucks and he may not be taking from "collection" but he's getting a HUGE paycheck and it's not all from books. The church must pay a portion of his "Salary". No need for opulance but he says its a gift from god, why should he reject it…….. I have stopped attending because of things of this nature.

Just a matter of time before word gets out this guy has a room on reserve at the local bathouse with a line up of guys waiting to take a trip up his hershey highway. It's always the ones yacking the loudest against Gays that are sucking dick the hardest.

Re: Ginarocks16 – I'm sorry, but it's not like going out and voting against two people's right to be in love makes you a good person. There is a difference between having an opinion and and creating legislature that classifies homosexuals as second-class citizens. And again, if someone said they just don't like black people, it wouldn't be okay that it's just their opinion, anymore.

Why is it ok for Kim Kardashian to sit on a HUGE pile of money while going around making sex tapes and doing everything BUT being an encouraging positive role model and it's automatically wrong if a preacher who writes books to have the same amount of money?

Perez, you write books. Are you saying that if you were a pastor the profits you make from your books and endorsement deals would automatically be a sin? GET REAL.

  87. 87

The bible says point blank that homosexuality is a sin multiple times, using the exact word "homosexual" and other phrases that would in no way be really open to interpretation unless you're trying to get around it, and in multiple translations. Interesting, how first the gay community was all upset because Christians were judging *them* but when someone clarifies that it's the *action* that is sin and that we're ALL sinners and none is greater than another, there's a problem with that too?

I fully agree that the bullying and driving gay kids to suicide is wrong but to assume Christians don't have that issue is misinformed. There is Christian persecution going on every day either by jailing and execution in other countries or simply being bullied for their faith in our own country.

As for comparing racism and slavery… Racism is wrong but that's still around and sadly, it's coming to light that it's not just "white folks" that have issues with other races. Slavery in the bible was much different than it was in this country. Slavery was used to pay off debts (and at times voluntary!). Once you were paid up, you were done. Nothing like what it was when old Abe did away with it.

I can't help but wonder what these comments would be if Mr Osteen had said "Stealing is wrong, but thieves will still get into Heaven." ? After all, it's the same thing in God's eyes.

  88. 88

Re: hesaidyesx4 – If your 'god' sees a homosexual and a thief as being the same degree of immorality then I think I have a whole different interpretation of what is immoral and what is not. The fact is is that your 'god' made gay people that way, he didn't make thieves that way. If you truly believe in a 'god' that would frown on two people in love because of the way he made them, then I feel honored not to consider myself a Christian.
I'm tired of seeing the old-fashioned Christians on here saying, "I'll follow whatever is in the bible, no matter what." The argument is tired, but true: Eating shellfish was explicitly condemned in the bible, as was mixed clothing, and many other lifestyles that we today see as being normal and completely harmless. If you can't get past two people loving each other then that is your problem, but please, stop using the bible as your justification.

  89. 89

This is the perfect example of how anti-gay people change the bible's words for their anti-gay agenda.

    Corinthians 6:9-11
Let us examine that very closely.

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate [malakoi], nor homosexual offenders [arsenokoites], nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.

First of all, before we address this line, let us consider one thing. Supposedly taken from a 2000+ year old book, understand that the word "homosexual" was not coined until 1869 by Austrian-born novelist Karl-Maria Kertbeny. So how it happens to be included in a true reading of the particular biblical passage should make you ponder how accurate the interpretation actually is. So man changing the words of the Bible to conveniently spread hate?

    Re: hesaidyesx4Re: hesaidyesx4

Anti-gay people like yourself will take the bible out of context to condone your bigotry. The word "homosexual" wasn't even created and coined until 1869 by Karl Maria Kertbeny. Since the bible is 2000 years old, it is very clear that man has changed God's words and added that word "homosexual" into the bible in attempt to change it's meaning to spread their anti-gay agenda. That should make you ponder about the anti-gay interpretation. Numerous biblical scholars have already proved that homosexuality is not a sin. All the passages commonly brought up have to do with idolatry or inhospitality or rape, not homosexuality. Stop twisting God's words to justify your bigotry, and stop changing God's words to justify your bigotry.

  91. 91

We need to get the word out to religious communities that anti-gay people are twisting God's words to condone their hate.

Homosexuality is not a sin. The Bible is constantly being taken out of context to support anti-gay views. Scholars who have studied the Bible in context of the times and in relation to other passages have shown those passages (Leviticus, Corinthians, Romans, etc) have nothing to do with homosexuality. These passages often cherry-picked while ignoring the rest of the Bible. The sins theses passages are referring to are idolatry, Greek temple sex worship, prostitution, pederasty with teen boys, and rape, not homosexuality or two loving consenting adults.
