Madonna Says Lady GaGa's Born This Way Was A Great Way To Redo Express Yourself!!

| Filed under: MadonnaMusic MinuteLady GaGa

In the January 30th issue of Newsweek, Madonna was asked what she thought when she heard Lady GaGa's Born This Way for the first time…

…and Madgesty just let it all out there!!

She replied:

I thought, this is a wonderful way to redo my song (Express Yourself). I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was…interesting.

And there ya go!!

Personally, we love them BOTH!! Both songs. Both queens!

But to do a fair comparison, we've added a little side-by-side video of the gurls' performing their anthems of strength. WATCH IT!!

And now that we've heard Madonna's thoughts, we wanna know… what are URS!?!

Madonna's "Express Yourself" was an awful, brassy, pseudo-empowering affair that needed a good remix to make it enjoyably danceable (as did most of Madonna's songs), and BTW was just a busy, pretentious, all over the place, wannabe anthem, although far more danceable than EY. People can argue back forth who's the most guilty of copying, but truth be told, neither of these ladies are original, and Madonna has done her share of copying, despite her fans attempts to explain it away as paying homage (when you "pay homage" to someone the bulk of your career, it's no longer that). Meanwhile, artists like Loretta Lynn, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Donna Summer, Joan Jett, Siouxsie Sioux, Deborah Harry, Kate Bush, & Wendy O. Williams were for more gutsy and groundbreaking than these two overrated, glorified pop stars combined, yet half of these people probably don't even know who the hell they are.

Re: Suzy12345 – gaga really is a joke. esp. after a flop ”album of the decade”, flop singles, flop tv special, and flop book. it's funny because she's such a rip off artist but still takes herself so seriously!! lol :-)

  13. 113

Re: IVIV – let it go and go download marry the night! lolllll

  14. 114

Both songs served their purpose, I suppose, which were to be somewhat uplifting. Besides, weren't there a few chords heard in Express Yourself from a Staple Singers song?

  15. 115

Re: Acem79 – and bcb. Madonna needs to calm down before one of those veins in her old lady hands pop up and hit her in the eye. (It's really funny to see all the Madonna hags get mad about what I say).By the way, I am writing this in a fake British accent to further make fun of her vagisty!

  16. 116

Re: perezisadumbass – she is calm, small one. that's why she's madonna. QUEEN BITCH. go download marry the night, asap!! your leader needs your help after all the flops she dumped out last year!! ”album of the decade”!! yeah!! lol :-)

    Re: FauxNews
"Madonna is much smarter than that and she is definitely much smarter than pampered little princess who daddy bought and paid for her record career. "
It's pretty well known that Madonna was well taken care of when she arrived in New York and already had connections established. It's not like she grew up poor: her father was an engineer for General Motors.

  18. 118

lady gags COPIED STOLE RIPPED OFF madonna's entire career…change a few things here and there in madonna's career, and tah dah! u have lady gags career…its a copy and paste job…what bugs me r her fans sayng gags is orginal when clearly she is not, and how madonna is copying her, how delustional are these fans!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. 119

Re: beautifulchild – your too simple. madonna paved the way for 2 generations of pop stars. she's a legend. and u can't compare her to some twatter that put out a flop ”album of the decade” while the public turned against her (gaga) for ripping off other artists. face it, little turd, gaga is ovah!! flop tv special, flop book copied from madonna's sex book — which happens to be the most successful coffee table book ever! :-) , gaga also put out flop single after flop single and even her fat bullied little turds started to grow bored. tbh, i feel sorry for gaga!! lol

  20. 120

    Re: FatAzzPooHeadDoodle
Yes, and now we're stuck with the Rihanna's, Katy Perrys, Kesha's and Britney's, thanks to Madonna "paving the way." If you want to read simple, reread your posts to half the people on here. You haven't told anyone off yet.

  21. 121

the first time i heard born this way i thought that it sounded exactly like madonna's song!!

  22. 122

Re: beautifulchild – my ”posts”, yes simple…but brilliant. why do you think i'm such a legend around here. and yes, i agree madonna is the mother of all the pop stars of today but none has copied and imitated her the way gaga has. ya see, gaga is SO unoriginal that everything, and i mean everything is copied or borrowed from another artist. now go download marry the night, asap!! :-) gaga needs a hit!! :-)

  23. 123

I am tired of the crap going on between them..first it was Gaga copying the fuck out of her and Madonna thought it was pathetic and i guess now it's Madonna thinks it is great? Fucking stupid..both a bore and ass kiss for attention and more fans Ox yawn..

  24. 124

Please don't couch your words MadDonna. Intelligent listeners ALL KNOW that it was a blatant outright theft by Lady GreasyGrub.

  25. 125

Re: SlaveMeh – hmm, i didn't think of it like that, maybe you are right.

  26. 126

Theres no popint in denying it… BTW does sound like express yourself… But just so you ppl are clear… dont be hypocrits for bashing Gaga… Cuz when Madonna first started she was allways getting bashed for the same types of things… Outfits and songs were things she was always accused of ripping off. I wasnt around then so i dont know if they were legit, but i know the comparisons were the same back then with Madonna

  27. 127

    Re: FatAzzPooHeadDoodle
Legend around here? Brilliant posts? Wow, and you're delusional too! Who would even admit to being a legend on this site? Oh, yeah, someone with no friends and no life. I would wait for that elusive brilliant comeback of yours, but this is your life, not mine. And you really should do something with that meth mouth of yours…not very attractive. Peace!

Re: beautifulchild – yes, legend, ”beautiful child”! lol deuces! p.s. meth mouth? projecting much? lolll :-)

  31. 131

i can't believe i'm reading people saying the 2 songs don't sound the same.. either deaf, dumb or delusional.. one of the 3 d's for sure.. and even more hilarious they're now say "it's just the cord progression".. lol yeah now you say that because that's what gaga said. Full of denial crap..

  32. 132

Re: Bloody Jenny – preach!! poor gaga really fell on her face with all the flops she peddled!! lol from tv, to books, to flop singles after flop single! it's pretty sad. p.s. lets continue to destroy her career…what's left of it! :-)

  33. 133

Re: Bloody Jenny – exactly!!!! anyone that denies this is LYING!! gaga is a thief!! lol

  37. 137

Oh neutrality. How dull. It's obvious, if you can read between the lines, Madonna's bemused but being a good sport about it. And wouldn't you be? That's why she stole Gaga's spot for the superbowl and hired one person who's very vocal about hating Gaga's guts (MIA). She's putting up with Gaga to keep mutual fans at bay but fully intends on kicking her ass and I hope she does.

  38. 138

Re: CatAttack – best comment evah!! spot on, catattack!! loveZ it!! :-)

  39. 139

That's retarded. If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression. It's the same one that's been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I'm the first f—ing artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn't mean I'm a plagiarist, it means I'm f—ing smart. Sorry.

  40. 140

Re: Stephanie Germanotta – Bitch ur clearly DELUSIONAL and an IDIOT!!

  41. 141

So, Madonna the original copycat queen throws shade at Gaga - nearly a year after Born This Way came out and, surprise surprise, Madonna has a new album due out soon. Yes, the chorus of both songs uses the same chord progression, so? It doesn't belong to Madonna! Born This Way was inspired by 70's disco classics (which I remember), no doubt Express Yourself was as well. Madonna just looks like she is afraid of Gaga's popularity, well she has reason to be as Gaga is twice the singer, lyricist and musician that Madonna is. Anyway, time and album sales will tell who the public prefer, I wish Madonna luck, just wish she hasn't stooped to this level as her legacy is well-established and she has no need to ;o)

  42. 142

Re: jp1988 – Gaga did admit to that one as she called it her "Teal Ambition" performance, get your facts right ;o)

  43. 143

Love both songs and yes they are similar.

  44. GIO says – reply to this

    144

I would have used a better video there are about 100 that synch it up perfectly…LOL…LUV MADONNA!

  45. 145

Re: Saetana – Stoop to what level, you fucking moron? Lady Gaga was the provoker in this situation. She flat out stole Madonna's song, took heavily from Madonna interviews from the 80's and 90's and tried to package them as her own persona. You know like a crazed psycho stalker. It's about time Madonna made a comment about this serial copycat. And the song you're talking about is "The Staples Singers-Respect Yourself" and Express Yourself sounds nothing like Respect Yourself. Two very different songs with similar titles that are both VERY COMMON sayings. Born This Way on the other hand can pretty much be matched up to Express Yourself perfectly. But keep trying monsters, your Madonna copied too arguments are nothing more than drivel.

  46. 146

Re: Saetana – "Madonna just looks like she is afraid of Gaga's popularity, well she has reason to be as Gaga is twice the singer, lyricist and musician that Madonna is."

Yet Gaga couldn't pull an original idea out of her delusional little mind for the life of her. And yes, time will tell. She's already going down in flames, so a 30 year career? I don't think so…people have had enough of this fraud and pretty much everyone other than the die-hard fans are completely over Gaga and couldn't care less about anything she releases in the future.

  47. 147

U FUCKING KISS ASS PEREZ! gaga RIPPED OFF madonna. PERIOD!

  48. 148

,,,the only difference here is that gaga is a better singer, writes her own songs, and can actually play a musical instrument…which is more than u can say about most of the so-called "artists"….and yes…its all a copy.

  49. china says – reply to this

    149

that flop this way is a blatant rip-off. there`s no question who`s second best here.

  50. 150

I think that Lady Gaga straight up copied a Madonna song and America was stupid enough to fall for it and give her millions of dollars for being "original" and "creative".

  51. 151

Between these two performances I think Lady GaGa did a better show, for those of you who are going to disagree don't even bother because you're probably older than balls Madonna killed it in her time and now GaGa the smart strong talented ego drivin woman that she is, is being intelligent in how she goes about things. She's our pop queen it's 2012 not effing 1987. All you old farts need to simmer down, build a bridge and get the FUCK over it.

  52. 152

ANOTHER POINT! How many times did Madonna perform Express yourself (or any of her songs for that matter) stripped down acoustically???? In the last year GaGa has performed BTW on her piano just the piano and her voice in a totally different style then the song was recorded in. In that aspect it sounds NOTHING AT ALL like express yourself. She's got chops on the piano and vocally. She's wildly creative, entertaining and intriguing. I never saw Madonna sporting teal hair and banging out an amazing acoustic version of her songs. GET THE FUCK OVER THE COPY CAT THING you can point out similarities that are obvious but there are is far more to GaGa than just those similarities. Seriously are you all 5??

  53. 153

  54. 154

Come on, Madonna! Who are you kidding? You came out in 1983 in lacy lingerie, something that Prince and Vanity 6 had already done in 1981! You stole from them and their sexually explicit performances. You stole from Marilyn Monroe, and many, many others to this date. You still steal, and now you have the AUDACITY to criticize Lady Ga Ga. OH, that's right. You're trying to make a come back. My bad.

  55. 155

[re=5983354]Re: Fetish Thank you for having the guts and intelligence to tell the truth.

  56. 156

ANOTHER POINT!!! GaGa's first two albums sounded nothing like Madonna, The Fame and The Fame monster are what explosively put her on the map and catapulted her into super pop star, she didn't make it big from BTW so what if she's getting Madonna-esque on her 3rd album, she can do what she wants sonically and to pay homage from 25 years ago is fine when you're killing it already it's not like she used Madonna's every move to climb up the latter of music stardom.

  57. 157

All I know is that I could not take my eyes off the performance on the left (Madonna). Gaga, looked like a latex mess (and not the good kind). There was an elegance to Madonna's performance which simply did not exist in Gaga goo goo's.

Madonna: moves, originality and of course, Jean-Paul Gautier.

It's so cute, though, the way Gaga copies Madonna, but it's also sad in that she tries so very hard, you really feel just how contrived it all is. Visceral, that desperation for validation is visceral.

  58. 158

I may be only halfway through my teen years. But I recognize talent when I see it. My bedroom walls are covered in Lady Gaga pictures and posters and quotes. She is truly an inspiration. She is original. She may seem like she is copying Madonna but her music is different. Way different. Some people on here LOVE Madonna. So what's so wrong about loving Gaga? I can't even compare Gaga to Madonna. I just can't see similarities. & it's not because I don't want to. Madonna can get inspired by Marilyn Monroe but Gaga can't get inspired by anyone without being critized. Little Monsters are NOT rude. The real reason why we are all on here talking and arguing over which is better is proof that both are amazing artist. Have some respect for the fans. Just because you're online writing comments doesn't give you the right to be disrespectful. Thanks to anyone who reads my comment & respects my opinion. -______-

  59. 159

I am the biggest Madonna fan and have been for almost 30 years. I would be the first to admit if I felt Gaga ripped her off, but I honestly do not hear the similarity. They don't sound the same at all and I even played them side by side at the same time and I can't see how everyone feels it's a rip off. They sound completely different with different tempos, words, beats, and vocal arrangements. I don't know. I guess it doesn't really matter, I'm just confused is all

  60. 160

Thats funny because I thought the very same thing when I first heard 'Born this Way'. Same thing I thought when 'Alejandro' came out I thought of Madonna's 'La Isla Bonita'. Also 'Fashion of his Love' also reminds me of Whitney Houston's 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody'. Thats the thing about pop music, nothing is really original anymore, just recycled. Thats why it's popular.

  61. 161

Re: FauxNews – I wasn't referring to Respect Yourself, I merely said that the chord progression used in Express Yourself and Born This Way is a typical 70s disco beat, Madonna did not invent it, both songs are derivative in that respect, as is all modern music. You instantly removed all validity of your opinions in any event by childish name calling, don't try to defend the indefensible, Madonna has a long history of lawsuits for theft, Gaga has none so far, if Born This Way genuinely was so much of a ripoff of Express Yourself then Madonna would have sued, no question, but she can't because she knows damn well it isn't. I'm not hating on Madonna but she was wrong to say that, especially almost a year after BTW was released (single) and, coincidentally, she has a new album coming out, trying to get cheap publicity off the back of younger stars should be beneath a woman of her stature, I'm more disappointed in her than anything ;o)

  62. 162

    Lady Gaga.

  63. 163

So if url think madonna is SO original, maybe you should try to perform a little research, from what i could gather, madonna is a complete ripoff of marilyn monroe, so original! Kiss my ass!!!

  64. 164

Re: FatAzzPooHeadDoodle – I have decided I love you! Even though we don't agree, I love your sassy comments! I tell you what you have convinced me enough that I will admit that I still love 80's Madonna but you have to agree a little with me. How about their bodies? Gaga, better?
