Hunger Games Studs Sound Off On Twilight Comparison

When The Hunger Games first came to our attention, the first thing someone told us was that it was "like Twilight." We understood the comparison: based on YA novel, sort of a love triangle going on…

But the more we learned about the book (and the fandom) we learned there is nothing Hunger Games fans hate more than their story being compared to Stephenie Meyers' vampy tales! Legit, a Tribute will cut you if they hear you say anything about Bella Swan and Katniss Everdeen in the same breath.

With that in mind, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth were both asked to comment on the comparison themselves and put to rest the theory that a fan of Twilight would find a lot of the same story elements in The Hunger Games.

Check out the video (above) to hear what Gale and Peeta have to say about it. (Note: We like Josh's answer a bit better.)

Hunger games is nothing like twilight! Sure there is a love triangle, but this is not the main plot point as it is with twilight. The way it develops, the way the characters interact with each other, and how the two boys generally have a kind of awkward mutual respect for each other. Only having finished the second book today, after reading the first in just over 24 hours I have kind of come to the conclusion that I have no idea who she should even choose to end up with in the end. If that is even possible by the end of the third book.
I just want to say I am not dissing twilight, not saying that I am exactly a fan of twilight ether, I am just kind of shocked that people would even make such a connection even if they both do have a love triangle..

Hunger games is more like a straight up rip off from Battle Royale

There is nothing similar between Twilight and The Hunger Games, particularly in light of the fact that THG is actually a well-written, emotional, suspenseful, thought-provoking story.
I actually much prefer Liam's answer, even though I've never really been a fan of his. I think Josh is trying to be a little too diplomatic since he was bombarded with all Twilight questions, but they both make good points.

The industry seems so certain thyat teens will flock to The Hunger Games like they did to Twilight that I hoe for the sake fo all that is American the movie flops. Not to put actors out of work, but to show the industrialized entertainment complex that wants to dictate everything we see and hear that we are not sheeple. Just because they build it doesn't mean we will come.

i hate that liam is getting so much attention in the promotion of this movie. they're trying to play up the love triangle to appeal to the twilight audience, but gale is barely in the first book

I read all the Twilight books that, mind you, were written (in my opinion) by an overly descriptive author allowing no room for actual thinking. And Im not knocking Twilight cause I read and enjoyed all the books.
BUT, I recently finished The Hunger Games trilogy back back to back in three days. I was very taken by the concept, how it was written and especially how the story plays out, especially in book three. What is absolutely brilliant about these books was that it is written almost as if it was already a movie. Has pace, momentum, and you can almost feel the energy created in the book. And its true that the love triangle is the back story…and thank goodness it is…because the main story itself has real thought provoking issues. Fighting oppression, civil rights, war, dirty politics. There is an incredible amount of death, tragedy and darkness about the whole story which I found captivating. It wont be everyone's cup of tea because of the darkness that carries throughout it, but I loved how it gave me so many emotional responses and so much to think about. It has a real edge to it.
The only way this is like Twilight is that it too, has such a massive fan base (with good reason). Suzanne Collins the author helped write the script, and the entire cast is spot it. I have full confidence that it will shine much brighter then Twilight…maybe not in numbers, but certainly with critical acclaim! cant wait for this movie! cant wait!
