Gay Teenager Phillip Parker Commits Suicide Due To Relentless Bullying

gay teen philip parker commits suicide

This devastating trend needs to end NOW!

On Friday, an openly gay 14-year-old high school student in Carthage, Tennessee named Phillip Parker committed suicide due to bullying.

Here's what the Phillip's grandfather Paul Harris had to say about him:

"A sweet kind person like Phillip took it out on himself, he killed himself to get out of the pain."

"Because he was gay, he got mistreated physically, mentally by several people out there at the school, and I am very resentful as a result of it."

More from Phillip's mother Gena Parker:

"I should have knew something was wrong, but he seemed happy."

"We are going to find out who done it, we are going to get justice for Phillip and you will pay for what you did to my son."

And more from Phillip's grandfather:

"After he did what he did, we found out a lot that we didn't know and there is a lot of bullying that goes on at the school."

"Whether it's verbal or physical a counselor at the school should be on top of it and notify the parents. We weren't notified, and Phillip didn't tell us about it."

Words cannot properly express how disturbing and upsetting this is. Our thoughts go out to Phillip's friends, family, and loved ones.

RIP Phillip Parker.

Before the nasty comments are made… I just want to say that I hope he same some peace, and that even though bullying will still continue, I hope we can support our kids and help them. No one deserves to be bullied. It's a terrible thing to go through.

Thank you, Perez, for keeping us aware of these horrible instances. I know someone will make a comment about the "gay-agenda"…so to those people, shut up. Seriously. Even if you have opposing views, you are sick and disgusting if you think helpless children deserve to die.

There is a gay teen sitting in ICU in Indianapolis. She attempted suicide because of abuse from her mother, not because she is gay but because her mother is psychotic. I know you won't post about her story, or a straight teens suicide. Just a thought of maybe being gay wasn't the only problem.

  3. 3

It is sad. But why don't we focus on the kids who AREN'T gay as well? Kids kill themselves all the time. Bullying, loneliness, parental abuse. This isn't an "epidemic" of the gay community. I was bullied…horribly. I didn't run to my parents. I fought back. Sometimes with fists, but usually with my words. I learned how to be sharp witted with my mouth.

Plus, I would also like to point out that with quotes like these…
"I should have knew something was wrong, but he seemed happy."

"We are going to find out who done it, we are going to get justice for Phillip and you will pay for what you did to my son."

Poor kid probably thought his mother was too stupid to understand where he was coming from.

  4. 4

I'm sorry that he committed suicide but really don't give a shit that he was gay. Not only gay kids commit suicide you know?

  5. 5

People are gonna freak out on me for saying this but I don't care…it's the truth. Kids don't just "hate", it's a learned behaviour. Now who do kids learn the most from? Their parents. It's them I ultimately hold responsible for future generations of kids learning intolerance…whether it is to people of colour, gay people, people of the female persuasion or people with disabilities. Nothing will stop until parents stop teaching their children to hate, nothing. Very sad.

Re: blondly7 – So why is it ok for straight kids to be bullied? Jewish kids too? Why is only the gay bullying something we need to stop? If Perez only focuses on the gay bullying problem, everyone else will feel ignored and the pressure on them will be two fold.

Kids kill themselves all the time. It's such a shame you only give a crap about the gay ones!

  8. 8

It gets better. Oops, too late.

get these gays some psychiatric help!!! its not ok to be gay and we shouldn't mask it any longer. counciling has been proven to be effective so why not go that route instead of being completely intolerant to it.

  11. 11

To all those who complain that Perez only cares about the gay suicides - gender equality is Perez's big cause, and therefore he highlights that issue. Of course other kids get bullied for all sorts of reasons - but Perez telling us about the gay suicides in no way undermines the struggles of others. Sometimes you have to pick a cause, because it is impossible to give equal attention to all of them.

  12. 12

This breaks my heart. Now this boy will never have children or live out the rest of his life. He will never know what could have been. So tragic.

  13. 13

Oh god…another kid who cant get off his fucking computer and complain about the way he is.
Kids kill themselves all of the time. why is it always the gay kid that didn't fit in? its the parents fault. Not the kids bullying. stand up for yourself or shut the fuck up.

  14. 14

High school is only four years of your life. Everyone mostly tries to just be part of the crowd and not call attention to themselves. Bullying will never stop. If you want to survive you have to fit in. After you graduate you can do anything you want. It's not fair that you can't be who you want in HS, get over it and just get through those 4 years.

  15. 15

This is tragic don't get me wrong, but I'm tired of the media making a big deal out of just gay suicides. Straight teens commit it too and for other reasons besides bullying. Those kids need help too yet everyone is becoming more focused on the fact that a teen is part of the lgbtq community. We need to stand up for everyone, not just gays. And we can't always blame the school. Parents need to know exactly what their kid is doing and how they feel. And if the school just isn't working out, then they need a plan B. It's sad that people have to take their lives before someone realizes we need a change.

  16. 16

This is disturbing. I mean, kids have been bullied, and relentlessly I may add, for decades, hell centuries. The question is, why do so many of them lately think suicide is an option? Where is the backbone? Sorry to sound cruel but that is some weak ass mentality. The question is why are so many parents raising such feeble minded kids? Suicide is selfish and reckless. You take your own life for a temporary problem and then you leave hurt and anguished family and friends behind, letting your bullies win. Why aren't these children being taught to be better equipped at handling these situations? Growing up I saw some horrible bullying as was I a victim of bullying to a certain extent. My best friend endured years of torture for being different. She still hates her bullies, but she pressed on, got over it and moved on.

  17. 17

STOP GIVING THESE DEAD KIDS ATTENTION. Every gay kid is just being dramatic and killing themselves to get attention.

  18. 18

I know you read your comments. YOU are a contributor to this trend. You bully people left and right and kids mimic what they see. YOU stop bullying and stop telling people to stop it. Actions, not words.

  19. 19

Re: CaliCoyote – I agree. In the long run, high school is very short, and unimportant. When I look back on my high school class and see that most of the really popular kids are still stuck in the 80's because that was the best time of their life, I almost feel sorry for them. For most of us, high school is an ordeal we have to get through, but once it is done, you can find your place in the world.

Okay here is the thing, I am sure Perez would comment on other bullying and suicides for non-gays if it was in the news more. There are too many children out there getting bullied for their sexual orientation, religion, race and other children who just want some to bully. I was bullied and I always thought of suicide. I never did it because I had family who supported me. Even after high school one of my bullies saw me and started talking shit to me in front of people I knew. Bullies don't ever stop.
The reason Perez talks about gay suicides is 2 reasons. 1. We read about it more because of all the anti-gay stuff that is going on plus gays trying to get marriage equality and 2. Perez is gay and he will fight for a cause that is near and dear to him just like any other person would. It doesn't mean he doesn't feel any kind of sympathy for anyone else. He reports what he reads.
Anyone who states that they don't care, in my opinion, is just plain ignorant and stupid. Really how can you sit there and say that it doesn't matter? A child committed suicide because they were bullied. Although the sexual orientation has been brought up that shouldn't even matter. There is one less happy child in the world due to tormenting. It's a very sad loss.

  21. 21

Re: rosebud99 – Kind of like like how the President says he cares about the LBGT cause and then does nothing about it because he has too many issues to chose from? Yeah, that's an funny one.

  22. 22

For fuck's sake. Nobody posted that it was "okay" for ANYONE to get bullied (straight, gay, Jewish, etc.)

Just because a blogger has taken an interest in this issue, that suddenly makes him pro-bullying for everyone else?

WTF is wrong with you people. (cough) excuse me . . . children. Only someone with a brain that is not fully developed would come to such a stupid conclusion.

Get off the internet and go edu-ma-cate yourselves, kiddies.

  23. 23

Hmmmm. Makes you think. Maybe these children shouldn't be "coming out" at 14. Maybe hang low for a few years & come out at a later time. Oh well, survival of the fittest, clear out the weak ones. Next!

  24. 24

Re: Loady Smurf – So while their classmates are talking about the opposite sex and dating, gay kids should fake it? Are you proposing a DADT for schools?

  25. 25

maybe it's just me… but he looks like Justin Bieber here!

  26. 26

If you are the victim of bullying - PLEASE STAND STRONG.
DO NOT LET THE BULLY(S) WIN. They are idiots. They will soon be out of your life.
WALK AWAY. THIS WILL NOT LAST FOREVER.
DO NOT HURT YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Why does this continue to happen?

  27. 27

    RosRe: rosebud99

Not at all. But you should be ready to face the backlash of a lot of immature teens. If you want to come out & be brave, you should just be realistically prepared for how your peers will react. Its not brain surgery here.

  28. 28

These kids realyl need to develop a thicker skin. Inlife people are not going to like you. hellt hey are going to be down right mean right to your face. Guess what life goes on so get over it. things dont always go your way. Not everyone is going to think youare awesome. Your life might be a totaly shit storm right now and it might conitue that way for a while and if your way of dealing with that is too kill yourself that is your chocie but it is not a good one. Life is not a Disney movie. Toughen up and put on your battle gear.

  29. 29

These gay kids should all go to school where I went to. Our school never made fun of the kids that were different. If anything, we went out of our way to befriend them. I had a gay friend. He was friends with EVERYBODY in the school. I don't understand how kids can be cruel to each other.

  31. 31

You know when I was in high school there was a group of bitches that used to say me and my best friend were lesbians because we were always together. Now 10 years later, guess who turns out to be the big, old dykes?? Not me or my friend, but the girls making fun of us. I'm guess all of these bullies have something to hide.

  32. 32

Oh my goodness, my prayers and best wishes go out to his family. I am so sorry that life has become so unbearable for so many innocent children.

  33. 33

Re: Lady Who? – Why are these comments necessary? Really.

  34. 34

First off whoever thinks suicide is normal and that kids should grow some balls, you are far from right! Anyone who has been bullied not only gay kids but also straight dont deserve any bad treatment at all! period and@ gay republican are you serious? or just fucking stupid!? how can they get attention if they killed themselves ? they are no longer here you dumbass! Suicide is not OKAY that is the bottom line! to all those who bully and hate gays/bisexuals/lesbians i say hopefully one day you will have kids and if he or her ends up being gay you will swallow all your words because it wont matter who they are you will love them no matter what! and the reason why this focus is mainly on gays is because apperantly they dont deserve the same rights as us! and i say fuck that i dont see anything different all i see is a person with 2 eyes, 2 arms, 2 legs, thats all that matters its not wrong to be gay! its wrong to judge but i guess those who judge are perfect never made a mistake in their life! oh and you say the bible say is wrong to be gay well it also saids its wrong to judge, oh and a little quote to all of those who hate "and by the grace of god i am what i am" so there you go!..EQUIALITY FOR ALL!

  35. 35

It's not a "trend". It's been going on for thousands of years. As sad as it may be, this isn't something new or surprising.

  36. 36

I have this eerie feeling, that giving this much publicity to suicides like these might give suicidal homosexual teens an incentive to actually take their own lives. Copycat suicides. It usually happens when a celebrity take his or her own life, but I would imagine this sort of media coverage would almost cause the same effect. If they've gotten clinically depressed due to bullying directed at their sexuality, and they're already suicidal, seeing how they get "heard" after they're death, might make suicide even more of an option. I really do not hope this is the case, but if it is, then this is not helping. What would help, would be to teach people how to see the signs before it's too late.

  37. 37

    Oh Tennessee again? hmm.

  38. 38

okay this is really pissing me off! STOP BULLYING! see how it hurts not just the ppl you bully but there families! whats wrong with being gay!!!!!!

  39. 39

well that's a shame. he looked like he would have been a hot ass twink at 18. damn assholes.

  40. 40

PLEASE PLEASE perez stop posting these stories its not fare on the other gay teens they look at this and think well maybe its the best thing i can do , its encouraging gay teens to take the easy way out by publishing their deaths please stop

  41. 41

Everyone gets bullied. He killed himself because he was gay

  42. 42

he was weak. thats why he killed himself. i dont feel bad for him, i feel bad for the parents who have to bury their son.

  43. 43

Anyone who disrespects those who have committed suicide is a disgrace to the human race. Go bash your taint in.

  44. 44

How sad. I hope gay teens stop killing themselves though. What I don't like about public schools is how they don't recommend home school for bullied kids, they, like keep homeschooling on the hush hush, in my opinion it is out of greed.

  45. 45

Bullying can be deadly to the shy, gay, geeky or whoever can't stand up to it. Poor kid. He does look Bieberesque. Teens need to have someone they can talk to and have a support group either in school, in church or synagogue, or online to help stay strong and get thru school. And, there should be mandatory classes on tolerance, understanding of differences and anti-bullying if there isn't already. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Read the book Spontaneous Happiness by Andrew Weil, MD. There is an epidemic of depression in this country and drugs are not the only answer (often they can cause suicidal thoughts in people who didn't have them before and other serious problems).

  46. 46

This is just not right! This precious child, gone, because he was in so much pain! We need to have more "It gets better messages" and being gay should be no big deal!
I wish everyone that was gay, would come out, and shout it from the roof tops!
Teens need someone to look and and listen to, so they will know that they are normal and nothing to be ashamed of!
Everyone should make sure every child is taught, that bullying is NOT the thing to do!
And the Bully should be punished, I feel so sad for the family! God Bless them, and give them peace!
