I'm goth (not the poser kind) and know for a fact that dying hair in colors like these began in the late 70s when it was NOT the trend, but people did it for their own purposes (e.g. pride in being different, rebellion against society, and artistic expression). Then part of me thought, well maybe Katy did the same thing when she was younger. She's around that age where she could have grown up listening to grunge music. It's highly doubtful, but still a possibility.
