Looks like we'll be seeing a lot of Mr. Assange in the near future!
Last week, we learned that controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is prepping to launch a talk show, which will revolve around "the world of tomorrow."
Now, we're hearing that Assange will guest star, as himself, on the upcoming 500th episode of The Simpsons, which airs on Feb. 19th!
Here's what Simpsons executive producer Al Jean had to say about this unlikely guest star:
"So we asked our casting director Bonnie Pietila — who had been able to unearth Thomas Pynchon and got Tony Blair to do the show — to find Mr. Assange. And she did."
"He’s a controversial figure, and there’s a good reason he’s controversial. There was discussion internally whether or not to have him on the show, but ultimately we went ahead and did it. There’s nothing we did that has anything to do with the legal situation that he’s in…We wanted to make sure it was satirical, and he was willing to do that."
And here's how the episode is being described:
"…Homer and Marge discover that the residents of Springfield are holding a secret town meeting to kick them out of Springfield for all of their shenanigans over the years. As a result, 'the Simpsons go off the grid to this very rugged place where they meet [Assange], who’s sort of their new Flanders.'"
More from Al Jean on Assange's similarites to Ned Flanders:
"Well, he lives next door. The similarities end there…He invites them over for a home movie and it’s an Afghan wedding being bombed."
Ha! Sounds like this one should be worth checking out, even for fans who haven't kept up with the show!
What do U think? Will U tune in to watch Julian Assange on The Simpsons' 500th episode???
