The Academy Promises A "Hard Look" At Nomination Process (After Pissing People Off)

academy awards best original song nomination process

Well they better!!

Since they pissed almost everyone off when they only nominated two pieces for Best Original Song, the Academy has decided to take a "hard look" at their nomination process.

Apparently it's all a point process and to get in the Song category, the piece needs an 8.5 at least. And we're sitting here thinking… okay, if somehow you're left with less than five, do a curve or something! Unless they really, really suck…

Otherwise they're just pissing a lot of people off! Viewers included…

According to Bruce Broughton, Academy Music Branch Governor:

There were angry members that I spoke to, sure. And I can understand people getting ticked off, especially songwriters. Some people have said, 'Oh, you blew it this year.' I don't know. Maybe we blew it. Maybe we didn’t. As soon as the Oscars are over, we're going to look at it.

The intent of the [point] rule, whether or not it worked out this way, is to raise the level of quality in the song nominations. We talked about it last year, and asked, do we want to keep that system, knowing that there could have been no nominations? And we voted to keep it this way.

I can promise you that we're going to take a hard look at the point system. We're going to try to see if we can get the rules to do what we hoped they would do: raise the quality of the nominated songs, so we can stand back proudly and look at our nominees.

We get the quality part, sure. Definitey don't wanna be nominating anyone! But c'mon, Mary J. Blige, Elton John, and Madonna were all super snubbed!!

But U know what our favorite song of the year was!! Man or Muppet!!!

And that's another thing they screwed up! They're not letting the only two nominations perform!!

to sign our petition so The Muppets can get on that stage!!

I disagree. I think most of the timelast few years, the songs are stupid. I'm glad they have a new standard. Just because they CAN nominate five doesn't mean they have to. If the songs are crap why should they. The Oscars are already a laughing stock, so I am glad any time they try to up their game and try to do something right. Sometimes, a song just isn't good enough. Too bad if people get pissed. Deal with it.

    It's become way too political
How else can anyone explain giving Oprah a special Academy Award

The Oscars need to loo at more than change a point system for songs, they need to move out of the no longer boring Kodak theater and into a fun space, where the nominees can socialize and be glamorous , instead of in stiff rows of seats ! Also, I love Billy Crystal , but really can't we find a host a little more hip, Jimmy Fallon would be great!!!

They should be apologizing for nominating Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close over Bridesmaids, 50/50, Drive, Harry Potter and Deathly Hollows Part 2, The girl with a dragon tattoo, The Muppets,Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

I honestly hope Rooney Mara will win an oscar for her incredible performance s Lisbeth Salander in The girl with the dragon tattoo… But do you think she could beat Meryl Streep??? Sigh… she was so amazing in the movie… I know my swedish and the accent she pulled of… I didnt even know it was fake till I heard her in an interview…. !!!

Harry Potter & 50/50 should have received some recognition!

Forget about the lack of song nominations, it's flat out rude to have 10 spots for best picture and only nominate 9 (1 of which doesn't deserve it at all with such a poor rating). It's like they purposefully spat in the face of movies like 50/50 and Harry Potter. That decision could not have been based on a point system, given their popularity would have met the cut-off.
