george lucas defends his decisions to make changes to star wars

We have a feeling the fans DON'T want to hear this!

In light of all hate he's been receiving for releasing an altered version of Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace in theaters, George Lucas has decided to speak out against the haters!

Here's George on his decision to make changes to Phantom Menace:

"Changes are not unusual — I mean, most movies when they release them they make changes. But somehow, when I make the slightest change, everybody thinks it’s the end of the world. That whole issue between filmmakers and the studios with the studios being able to change things without even letting the director of the movie know…I’m very much involved in that [so that’s not happening here]."

"…My job is to try to make the best possible movie it can be — and the current version is the Blu-ray version. That’s the one that’s been made into 3D. But it’s just a conversion. We haven’t made any changes other than the 3D."

And here's George on hate he's received from fans for changing other Star Wars movies:

"…It’s not a religious event. I hate to tell people that. It’s a movie, just a movie…"

"…Star Wars, there’s basically one version — it just keeps getting improved a little bit as we move forward…All art is technology and it improves every year. Whether it’s on the stage or in music or in painting, there are technological answers that happen, and because movies are so technological, the advances become more obvious."

He makes valid points, but once again - we REALLY don't think the hardcore Star Wars fans out there want to hear it!

Ah well. They may moan and complain, but we have a feeling they'll all continue going to see these new versions of the Star Wars movies anyway!

What do U think? Are U pissed at George Lucas for messing with Phantom Menace???

He should edit out Jar Jar Binks.

i wonder how all the hard core fans feel now their god George Lucas has pretty much told them what all non star wars fans have thought all along… they re just movies people, dont get so worked up over them. This guy is after one thing and one thing only, MONEY. and you lame retards just keep handing it to him. He doesn't care about you, only how you keep making him richer. i mean, how many different version of the same movie do you need to watch over and over again???

Go George! I agree with Lucas about his decision to "do whatever he wants with his own creation." It's his right, after all.

As far as the fans whinning about these changes - they're the ones who'll be first in line to see and buy these movies (even with the changes) when they become available. Personally, I can't wait to see and buy "PM 3D" myself, and I was around when SW first came out and can be grouped with the original fans. Most of them hate the prequels, but not me. I love all 3 AS IS and think Lucas made the right decision making them, especially "Revenge." Vader's backstory had to be told.

In my opinion those who condemn Lucas with their snide remarks have ruined things for all SW fans due to his decision to retire from big budget productions. Now we'll never get to see additions to the saga. Thanks a lot you dumb S.O.B.'s!

I'm not a Star Wars fan in the slightest but I have to side with George Lucas on this one. While yes, you need to remain loyal to your fans, it is his creation to do what he wants with. As a writer, I totally get that. And he's very right that it is just a movie…

I could care less if he alters The Phantom Menace, that movie was shit and everyone knows it but to alter the original films is not ok. Main reason being when you put 30 year old footage together with crappy looking cgi it can only result in the cheapening of the product.
It's important to remember that fim is an art form. It'd be like suddenly deciding to re-paint the Mona Lisa with blonde hair just because blondes are suddenly more popular.

First off the one, two and three sucked. Cast, story, everything. In this it would be a good thing.

The original three (four, five and six) were wonderful Then he added more special effects (HEY GEORGE, if people can see the strings in special effects they SUCK). If you are going to add something, make sure it is good, not half assed.

Personally I think Lucas is an epic prick. He does nothing to help the homeless and unemployed in N. Cal where he lives. He sees the people struggling everyday when he goes to coffee. His educational foundation does nothing to help those adults in need.

Hey George, how about a donation to St. Vincent de Paul to help some folks who need it in your home town?

If by messing you mean he took Jar Jar out then I'd be okay with that, but somehow I don't think I'm lucky enough for that to be the case.

George is such a great director. But honestly I'm waiting for the blue ray version of Red Tails.. I hear he is going to change all of the black guys white…I mean seriously.. the academy is racist, everyone is racist.. i mean.. can you imagine a black man being president?

    Oh.. never mind.
