Gotye's Not A Gleek, Calls Darren Criss 'Dinky'

Darren Criss Gotye

Dinky?! DINKY?! Why, we never!

After getting rave reviews from, well, just about everybody, there is ONE person who’s not so fond of a song recently covered on Glee!

The kids of McKinley High have been taking on just about every artist this season of the hit show, including Aussie singer Gotye.

Sounds like Gotye, though, isn’t really feelin’ Darren Criss and Matt Bomer’s rendition of his current single, Somebody That I Used To Know!!

In a recent interview, the singer confessed:

"They did such a faithful arrangement of the instruments but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it's playing to you from a cardboard box. It made it sound dinky and wrong."

Ouch!

Shouldn't he be flattered…?!

Somebody That I Used To Know is currently number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and has really taken off.

We think Gotye should be happy that Glee gave his single SO much extra exposure to a crowd that might not have given it a listen in the first place!

We still LOVE the song…BOTH versions!

Can't please everybody, we guess!!

Goyte didn't need the extra help of Glee. The single was exploding on its own merits.

And he's right. It was an extremely generic performance. It felt like "bad karaoke" (as Simon Cowell would say back in the day). There was nothing special about it except that brothers sang a break-up song.

well first of all, he didn't call darren "dinky" he said the cover was. and he's right. glee takes the soul out of the songs they cover and makes them sound like generic autotuned kidz bop. but that's the fault of the music producers though, not the cast members because they all can sing (except heather morris and dianna agron..)

I liked the song but when I saw them perform it on Glee… I LOVED THE SONG. They performed it way better. Also, I saw Gotye "perform" live on tv and they sounded like total crap. They looked half alseep and when the girl came out to sing, she was horrible! I guess something was finely tuned in the studio eh mate? I think they are just jealous coz Darren Criss and Matt Bomer performed way better than Gotye can on their own song LOL.

I like the two version :) I Think each song have is unique style .The original version is wonderfull and I think the version of Glee is wonderfull too ! The two song have not the same style for sure but is not a reason to criticize. I'm sure the version of glee has help to make know Goyte. Darren criss has a wonderful voice :)

I'm a little bit disappointed by what he said, as I think the cast of Glee did a great job. I saw a live performance by Gotye and he wasn't that great, his version of the song was obviously tuned in studio too. Anyways, both version of the song are good!! :)

they should have allowed Matt Bomer to do the song by himself.. Dareen completley destroyed it.

  7. 7

    This is EPIC!

  8. 8

    This opinion is EPIC!!!!!! Ha!

  9. 9

It's a bummer that Goyte would say that.

I would have to agree that he should be at least a little grateful to have his song on a platform as big as Glee.

While I enjoy both versions, it makes me think a little less of Goyte that he would criticize someone else's work publicly like that.

Re: ed69 – Really? Because I couldn't tell the difference between their two voices lol.

  11. 11

He should just say it…They Gayed it up bad…

  12. 12

the glee version made me love the song - and YEA the song is pop-ified get over it. If he was going to bitch about this he shouldnt have given permission. OH WELL.

Every artist that is blessed by having their song covered on Glee should be thankful. The single was doing well, although there were still many that were not familiar with it until it aired on Glee. I have seen Gotye perform live many times and their rendition is not up to par with the recording. Understandable, although they should not down the performance. Darren Criss is a humble human being and has pure class.

  14. 14

What the fuck did he expect?! If he didn't want it in that 'Glee style' then he shouldn't have let them use it.

Re: ed69 – I agree with you. It would've been better if it was just Matt Bomer because his voice had more range in the song but it might have not made sense with the storyline. Darren Criss ruined the song for me, I didn't like his voice in this track at all. I think Gotye is entitled to his opinion, it is his song afterall. Plus the song was already playing on the radio before Glee did their cover.

NO artist NEEDS Glee to cover their song. But Glee needs artists to rip off. I cannot wait til this show is finally cancelled.

Re: Claire – realy you think matt bommer is better performer than darren criss you must have your ears checked ……….. bommer is just pretty face but darren is mega talented with soulful voice

  18. 18

Gotye is a belgian singer, not aussie…

  19. 19

Not everyone likes Glee and it's his song and he has the right to his opinion. Glee takes all of the individuality out of songs by making them sound generic. I actually applaud artists that don't allow them to use their songs, although they get so much negative press from it. An artist has the right to decide who uses their songs. Glee doesn't make or break artists, they use already popular songs to their advantage, not the other way around.

If they don't like "that pop Glee style" they shouldn't give Glee permission to sing one of their songs… just saying. I love both versions.

  21. 21

Gotye was like #3 before the Glee episode even happened….he was on his way to #1 anyway.

I think both songs were amazing, dont get me wrong when i first saw a sneak peak at the song, i didnt think it was that great, BUT you also have to realize that with glee, its not just abt how the song sounds, its how glee interprets into the storyline, when i first heard it, yeah it was disappointing but putting it together with the story and getting to know Matt Bomers character and the storyline, it was perfect!!!

I wonder if Gotye watched the whole episode or even watches Glee enough to understand that whatever pow factor isnt available in the performance, makes up for in element and the storyline, the only person i feel sorry for is for people who didnt feel the excitement, sadness and love in this performance because once you see that, than WOW, its amazing!!!

  23. 23

and Gotye doesn't necessarily have to give the permission. The song writer or record company can give it too.

Its because Darren Criss is way overrated. His singing is mediocre at best. He's a pain in the ass, and so is hs character on Glee. I'm not surprised on Gotye's reaction. After seeing that episode, I said to myself that Criss managed to butcher both Gotye and Christina Aguilera in just an hour. Darren Criss is a seriously huge pain in the ass.

    25

Re: Freddie – i think he is a pain but just only in your ass because apperantly he has a huge fan base that just watching glee just for him i don't think there is any single guy from glee can even perform like him, the (mediocre guy) made a lot of bucks just in 3 weeks on broadway so go and check your ass.

Re: eng_mido – I didn't say Matt Bomer was a better performer. I just said his voice was better suited for this song than Darren Criss'.

Both versions sound extremely similar. Given the attention the Glee cover has brought to an audience who may not have previously known Gotye, I don't think he should be criticizing the song. After all, he /did/ grant Glee the rights to his music.

  28. 28

Some songs are best left alone by Glee producers and this is one of them.

  29. 29

I can understand the hurt feelings in terms of Gotye's comments, but as an Australian I think I can understand his discomfort at having the song reproduced in such a manner, don't get me wrong glee is an increasingly popular show over here however, we're not a country that is particularly famous for our pop artists (Kylie Minogue excluded) and most people here are incredibly excited and proud for Gotye making it big, but I think its that sense of pride that causes outrage, that sense of "how dare they take this guy away from us" and having this song reconstituted into a pop song was a bit of a slap in the face for all the aussies who have supported him for many many many years and attached has attached that "sell out" stigmatism that spells the end for alot of Australian artists (silverchair I'm looking at you here) it's more of a cultural thing than anything else.

Rave reviews? Exactly from who? Your sorry ass doesn't count like in life.

  31. Jay says – reply to this

    31

lol dumb fuck, Gotye's song was already popular with like 70 million hits on youtube WAY before the show. Which is probably the primary reason why it was covered by Glee, since you know their cash cowing history. And yes, agreed with Gotye's comment, their cover was absolute shit. The original is and will forever be better then any cover, especially Glee. btw this article is so bias and missinformed, it's ridiculous.

Re: Ali&Greg – No, he's Belgian-Australian. He was born in Belgian but moved to Australia when he was 2. Pretty sure 39 years of living in Aus, counts as being and Aussie.

  33. 33

Darren Criss is tops in my book!
He sang it better than "what's his name"!

  34. 34

Re: Jay – mea culpa :)

  35. 35

Personally, I agree with Gotye - Glee songs are over-produced and clearly tuned. There is no doubt Darren Criss and Matt Bomer can sing, but the way they execute the show is the reason I stopped watching.

Glee version quite sucks (in my opinion). And plus, Gotye never call Darren Criss dinky, but when he said that he meant the song!
