Perez Reviews: Once!

| Filed under: Personally PerezBroadway BabiesPerez Reviews

Wow. Wow. Wow!

We were blown away by the Broadway adaptation of Once on Saturday!

The musical was exhilarating! It was earnest and poignant but also vibrant and fun!

The helpless romantic in us couldn't help but be riveted by the captivating love story, told so beautifully and honestly. And the lead performances, by Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti were inspired! So soulful! Rooted in a sense of realness.

The music, which we had never heard before but are totally buying the soundtrack to, was so moving! It's like One Republic meets Damien Rice. It's rooted in the folk earnestness of Rice but also has the commercial appeal of One Republic.

The ensemble was great as well! No complaints, except for we wish Milioti's character had an additional song or two. The show was driven by Kazee's character, and thankfully he handled it with such finesse. And Cristin's portrayal was so multidimensional and emotionally rich!

We can't recommend Once enough! It's right up there with Newsies for our favorite new show we've seen this season!

The music has been around since the movie came out. You just discovered that the soundtrack was great now that it is on Broadway?

The music came out in 2006 when the movie came out. You are so behind the times. Once the musical was at times fun but over all is average at best. If I had to choose between the movie and musical I would pick the movie every time.

Ya, seriously. This music is by the Swell Season - they've been around for a while and are wildly popular.

You should really check out the soundtrack and the original composers/performers: The Swell Season. It's really great music!

Am I the only one that hated this movie? Everyone else raved about it including the critics and I thought it was boring as heck and I LOVE the movies.

Now tell us what you really think, Mario, about how it would have been better with two dudes. You know that the natural opposite sex love makes you sick to the pit of your hollow, heartless chest and pitiful, empty soul.

Perez… Try to catch "Peter and the Starcatcher" while you are in NY. It is a great play with music, about the origins of Peter Pan. That, and "Once" were my favorite shows that didn't rely on giant sets and special effects, but real emotion and inventive staging. Heart over spectacle.

The movie though boring is interesting but really is just there to showcase the brilliant music made by the swell season and that amazingness is why they created the musical. if you buy the musical soundtrack you need to buy the swell seasons cd's and see the movie.

Who is the Swell Season? I own the soundtrack and the movie and the music is by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Glen Hansard is/was part of the band The Frames from Ireland who I have been listening to since 2004. I believe the movie soundtrack was nominated and I think it won an Oscar. Also, songs from it were featured on at least two separate seasons of American Idol- not that it means much… The movie is super boring, not sure if I have made it all the way through yet but still it is worth the watch!!
