Diane Keaton Gets Weird And Super Awkward On Colbert

| Filed under: TV NewsSuper SeniorsStephen Colbert

Whoa! It's a good thing Stephen Colbert's wit is so quick!

Diane Keaton went on the Colbert Report yesterday to talk about her new book … or at least that's what Stephen was led to believe.

As soon as the conversation begins, she starts getting super combative!

She talks over Colbert, makes weird jokes (where we're not sure if she's serious or not) and insults him in the most awkward ways.

Does she know it's not the Keaton Report??

So, Stephen had to go on the defensive, quickly threatening to destroy her new book and asking if her mother loved her.

She responds by calling him a sexual pervert.

It's uncomfortable.

You'll def want to check out the video (above) to see this most uncomfortable exchange.

You know, I never comment on these types of sites but I watched this episode of Colbert the other night and all I could think was OMG HOW FREAKING AWKWARD AND RUDE. It was a really weird interview.

  2. 2

she was on Ellen the other day and i thought she acted really weird…hmm doesn't sound good

  3. 3

I was hoping someone would talk about this! I saw this interview and I just kept thinking that she had to have been drunk. She just kept laughing and insulting Stephen and at the end she even tries to leave and she's stumbling all over the place! Props to Stephen for making it funny though, it could have been worse!

So funny because I was watching this last night and had to turn it off, I was that embarrassed for her. She seemed like she was either drunk, high or both.

  5. 5

And she checks into rehab in 3…..2……

    6

she was wasted. falling down drunk. clearly

  7. 7

I assumed she was drunk. It was very uncomfortable to watch.

  8. 8

Pills and uncertainty will do that to ya,

These are two very funny people. Their humor goes over most peoples' heads, as it has with the readers on this site, unfortunately. This is why you all should read books and go to insittutes of higher learning, so that you will pick up on wry sarcasm. No, she isn't drunk. No, she isn't insulting him. Ugh.

  10. 10

What the hell is wrong with her? That was terrible. That was so hard to watch, she was so rude, and not funny, just awkward, rude, snappy, arrogant, and snobby. I don't even watch his show, but wow it takes talent to deal with an interview like that the way he did…he tried very hard, and he basically did her a favor by trying to make it as harmless as possible, but damn did she make it hard. What an idiot, kind of disapointing, she made a fool of herself.

I love that this got brought up. I thought she was drunk and weird too! Stephen is the man with his quick wit.

@ Scorchy—-you obviously don't know how wry sarcasm works…or even the definition of sarcasm or its context with her jokes, where was the irony in her jokes? Also you can't even spell "institute" when trying to insult people with your intelligence…..well done!

I thought she was great and they were very funny. Not sure how anyone could confuse her schtick with seriousness and/or awkwardness.

  15. 15

heres a true hollywood liberal for all to see. drugged and stupid. yeah clooney knows whats best for the country too. just look at his 911 charity. idiots all of them.

  16. 16

lmao i thought it was hilarious… she is a quirky awkward person… i find it endearing and amazing!

  17. 17

Perez - are you insane? That was one of the greatest interviews ever. Diane Keaton is already a super awkward, supremely nutty person. And Colbert was right there with her. Frankly, I think you saw something different. She is an amazing person who's career has transcended all of her contemporaries. Your headline is misleading and silly.

  18. guest says – reply to this

    18

Not cute, not quirky. Arrogant, silly and likely stoned drunk. Colbert should cross her off his list. He is too much of a nice guy to put up with old lady drunks.

  19. 19

definitely high, probably on anti-depressants. but all in all a pretty funny appearance and not really embarrassing for people used to being out front…and she is kinda weird anyway…

It almost seemed like she thought she was being playful and funny, but she was being awkward. Why all the emphasis on it being the paperback copy? When he did finally ask her a serious question (about her mother's diary), she just stared at him unsure of what to say. Did she even write the book?

  21. Ceci Sommers says – reply to this

    21

Diane Keaton made the ultimate mistake…she tried to be funny with a master wit and made an ass out of herself. She was so bad I couldn't even feel sorry for her.

  22. 22

She was totally flirting with him. She is just weird and doesn't have the social skills to pull it off. It comes off awkward.

  23. 23

I don't get what the "controversy" is all about. Its clear to me that the two of them were having the most joyful playful time with one another. I think Keaton looked great (so nice to see her sans a Holly Hobby hat). She was obviously enjoying herself immensely. She was being funny as she perceived a Colbert audience might want to see. Colbert was having a jolly time. Their banter was lovingly playful and poking fun at those who seem on a campaign or political trail. Don't forget that Colbert's on-air persona is suppose to be a parody dufus of the Fox News and Tea Party variety. Keaton was obviously playing to that - even while on the fence with what she knows to be the real Colbert. People really need to develop a higher sense of humor to understand stuff - silly stuff as is seems - like this. Keaton may have been tired and loose but clearly not drunk at all.

  24. 24

looks like someone was hittin' the sauce. Oh Diane, your "sense of humor" is no match for the wits of Colbert. This interview made me NOT want to buy your book.

  25. 25

    Re: scorchy
I totally think she turned the tables on him and he got confused and she ran with it. He seemed unsure. Nothing about it was awkward. He wasn't sure if he should be comedic about as she kept throwing him off balance, I think it was rather genius of herself
Leave it to Perez to twist it, Perez just didn't get it.

  26. 26

I thought she was great and they were both having fun. What were you watching Perez??

  27. 27

The REALLY interesting thing is the HUGE variance in how this clip was received/interpreted. This is a great study in itself!

  28. 28

    She is drunk or high.

No sense of humor. She would have picked up on the fact that Colbert was obviously very uncomfortable. She tried to hug and leave at the same time at the end. This isn't humor, but a very drugged out old woman.

  29. 29

    Hey Diane, smoke much ??

  30. 30

Anyone familiar with Diane Keaton would know that she was neither drunk nor stoned. This is her awkward, adorable schtick. I thought the interview was charming and that the two understood one another well. I definitely think this is a generational thing in terms of not really "getting" Diane Keaton.

  31. 31

    Re: RedBlayze
Whats even MORE interesting, the comments voting her as drunk etc are just that The comments voting her as funny have some depth….just sayin'

  32. 32

Re: Picote – Agreed. She's trying too hard to show that she's still "young at heart, full of fun, giggly, witty", etc but it didn't work. Fell flat.

  33. 33

Hahahaha she outdid Colbert at his own game. She out-awkwarded the king of awkwardness. This reminds of Madonna's infamous "Pee In The Shower/Smell My Panties" interview on David Letterman

    34

That was just about the strangest interview I've ever seen. Uncomfortable to watch, even from my living room. Kudos to Colbert for managing to get through the segment.

Did you watch the video? Theirs nothing weird going on in it. The both of them are clearly joking back and fort and the both of them are laughing through the whole thing. Until the end of the video. But other then that it's noting to talk about.

Re: Lisa – I hope this is a joke. There was nothing "to go over people's heads" you're reading too much into this. She was just stupid, arrogant and rude. I guess she thought if she could fein as "strong" a personality as Stephen's she might get a sidekick position. Tought to be a woman that old in hollywood.

Did I watch a different interview? Following it, I felt the need for a hot shower – after a finger down my throat and a good primal scream…
Far from "charming", she trivialized the crime of sexual assault and, in doing so, demeaned all women who have struggled with this most traumatizing and stigmatizing experience. We can only hope she was ashamed of her own appalling behavior – perhaps someone should ask her?
That was nowhere apparent. As a woman of notable prestige and power in our society, she mocked all people who will never be afforded a stage of such scope and reach and squandered an occasion to speak meaningfully of her life as a woman in a male-dominated industry and of her relationship with her mother, a significant component (ostensibly) of her book, no less.

I dont understand how some people dont see just how awkward this interview was. And if you really think that perez is being stupid about it go read the new york times article about the interview. Gives good reasons for why it was wierd.

    43

She wouldn't vote for colbert because he's an actor.
    She's played a role.
She got a little nervous, but she was mostly laughing her head off.
It was a bit awkward imo, but she's not mean-spirited.

  46. 46

That was an awesome interview. They were obviously having fun. I didn't think it was awkward at all.

  47. 47

    i loved it.

  48. 48

Re: skookumchick – I don't think she was belittling or deflating the experience of those who are sexually assaulted or harassed. In fact, I think she was making a point of how many superficial accusations and jump-to-accuse cases/situations there are out there which REALLY do damage to those truly suffering or experiencing genuine assault or harassment. She was mocking not the real victims of real situations but those who jump on media bandwagons and accuse anyone of the least bit of what is, obviously, innocent nothing. Diane Keaton isn't stupid. She was not making light of genuine harassment. She was mocking those who all hop on the exaggerated media exploitation of disingenuous accusations.

  49. 49

For those who think it worked, let me tell you I was in New York at the taping of that show, and Colbert chatted with us in the audience afterward. Said it was the most fucked up interview ever, and he apologized to us. We figured they'd edit a lot of it out, but they didn't edit much. Something is seriously wrong with Keaton.

Drugged? Drunk? Get real. IT"S A COMEDY SHOW and they were having a fun time.

Kevin, I was there. She was OFF, and Colbert wasn't happy about it.

I have a Phd. in literary studies…and she looked pretty messed up to me darling. Your logic does not compute. She seemed like she was trying, and failing, to be funny, because her timing was crap and she was miss reading the hell out of the situation, which to me smacks of being disoriented.

Re: scorchy – well… I read a lot and am well educated (graduate degree enough?), and as funny as she was, the interview was rather strange. She's usually more collected than that. Looked a bit tipsy to me (you know, when you get to that point where you think everything you say is hilarious). Perhaps she was nervous. Perhaps they had been having a great laugh backstage. Perhaps she'd had one too many. Who knows?

  55. 55

ive seen enough of her movies to know shes quirky and seems to be joking in this if not kind of left me feeling a little confused ive also seen enough of her movies to know its time to stop rolling her out into movies althou she looks good there…i think she was only joking evenif it came across slightly demented

    Re: Adorable Kevy

I did not see anything adorable about Keaton. She is on the cover of AARP this month, and I would rather not have her as a representative of the older generation. Many said that the interview needed to be viewed with more depth of understanding. I do have a masters in English, and I generally can understand comedy. Perhaps, my judgment was clouded because of my senior citizen status, but I found nothing endearing or funny about being rude (I won't vote for you for President; you are a sexual pervert; I'm bringing you up on charges) or aggressive (refusing to answer any questions about her book). Congrats to Stephen Colbert for his poise in a difficult situation.
