The Hunger Games Show Officially Picked Up By CW!

The Selection

May it be ever in your favor TiVo!

The Hunger Games-esque show has joined the CW line up!

The network that lurves jumping on the band wagon — or hitching theirs to someone else's — is debuting The Selection this fall, based off a book by Kiera Cass, that ripped off is like the The Hunger Games.

This new show/book is about a girl from a futuristic, war-torn nation who is chosen by lottery to compete for fame and fortune against a backdrop of hunger and carnage. Sounds just kinda sorta familiar?? LOL!

The Selection's only main difference from The Hunger Games is the prize: they don't kill each other and they're fighting to marry the prince.

Friday Night Light's star Aimee Teegarden played the leading lady in the pilot, but she could be recast.

We're not quite sure what to think about this show….

But anything HG related will probs be ratings gold!

These books are almost nothing alike. It uses a formula many stories before the Hunger Games have used and wraps it around a cheesy story and bad writing.

  2. 2

isn't the hunger games just a rip off of Battle Royale ?

    doesnt sound interesting at all..

  4. 4

Are you serious? Hunger games is a total rip off of Battle Royale! And it's a billion times better then this rehashed flavor of the month book. If you're going to go that route, might as well let it be known..

Battle Royale did not invent the premise of "kids hunting/killing kids"…it's just something the misogynistic, virginal, fanboys love to toss around because The Hunger Games was written by a woman and features a strong FEMALE protagonist. Oh yeah, it made a ton of money and garnered a shitload of acclaim… book/film wise. As far as other titles with similar premises there's The Lord of the Flies, The Lottery, The Most Dangerous Game, The Long Walk, Thesus and the Minotaur just to name a few. The Selection is indeed cashing in on the massive success of The Hunger Games and time will tell whether or not it has what it takes…like the man said, wait until we watch it before we judge.

I agree with sick_girl- The books are almost nothing alike!

You really should suspend judgement until you take the time to read the book yourself. And as others have said, The Hunger Games wasn't unique in any way, shape, or form- almost every YA book of the last five or ten years has had similar, if not the same, elements.

Publishers and marketers are constantly comparing books to one another, like with The Selection they said that it is The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games, simply so that potential readers will have an idea of what the book is like/ give them an indication whether they would like to read it. Nothing more. Kind of like how a lot of new books are always being marketed as "The new Twilight"- it doesn't mean that they are copying Twilight, just that fans of Twilight might like the book.

Again.. you know NOTHING about TV..

This show was NOT picked up by CW. In fact, it is having to go back into reproduction to TRY to see if they can make it better so the CW would maybe pick it up for later in the year.

Don't report on shit you aren't sure of.

Athena you cannot throw off random names of books in hopes that you cling to something in which makes what you said true.

Re: Avery – Battle Royale was not the first to come up with the kids killing kids premise, but it was the first to come up with the plot for a dystopic post-apocolyptic future where an oppressive government regime chooses a group of kids through a lottery to fight to the death in a televised game environment. While details of the books were different, it is strikingly similar. If you had read the books, you would know that one of the main characters is a female, and that the point of views switch around. I would say that both books have equally shitty writing, but that the Battle Royale fanboys(and this girl) have a legitimate complaint about the similarities in plot.

Okay this is dumb read the book. If it's a rip-off anything it's The Bachelor haha and I read it. The thing is the casting is good and I can see why they picked it up it's great for their audience. In relation to The Hunger Games (ummm that story wasn't totally original either if you had ever read Lord of The Flies or other dystopian books) anyway if you like The Bachelor you'll like this.

Didn't the CW give Perez the All Access show? Kinda lame for him to diss on the network.

Anyway this kind of sounds like that new Disney movie where the boys compete in events to marry the Princess, haha.

This book is nothing like The Hunger Games. You make it sound like they physically fight. Both The Selection and The Hunger Games are incredible. Don't hate on it until you read it.

Re: Athena – Have you read battle royale? one of the main characters is a tough as fuck killing machine who has the second highest body count of the game.Oh, and I am neither misogynistic, a virgin… or male.
hunger games is a pathetic watered down version for western audiences who can't take a bit of violence.

As far as any speculation about ripping off The Hunger Games, this should settle that issue. I read in one interview that she started writing The Selection before Hunger Games came out and I read this interview that Kiera Cass did with Entertainment Weekly; this is what it said:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Where did you get the idea for The Selection?
KIERA CASS: The Selection was born out of wondering about the “what ifs” of other stories, mainly Esther (from the Bible) and Cinderella. I just wondered if Esther, before she was shipped off to the palace to compete for this king, maybe liked the boy next door. Even if she lost, she was never coming home. Did she maybe care about someone else and have to let that love die? I was just curious about her heart. And Cinderella never asked for a prince. She asked for a night off and a dress. We assume that she lived happily ever after because she got a man, but what if that wasn’t the case? What if this was way more than she was prepared to deal with?
