Demi Lovato Addresses Her Bipolar Disorder

As a Disney product, thus mentally f*cked at an early age, Demi Lovato experienced a complicated, convoluted reality that forced the teen star to grow up, very quickly…

Demi recently opened up about being diagnosed as Bipolar in 2010 while seeking treatment for a number of harrowing personal issues - self-mutilation, eating disorders, substance abuse - and how releaved she was to discover a scientific reason for her muddled headspace.

The soulful artist revealed:

"I felt relieved when I found out. Like I'm not completely crazy; there's a medical reason for all of it. It's a daily thing; you don't get time off from it. And if I feel myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help, which is hard for me to learn, because I really like doing everything on my own."

We are ecstatic the new X-Factor judge emerged from her troubled, twisted seas a strong, inspirational young woman, and are immensely impressed with her continuing honesty and humble nature.

Shine your light, Demi… SHINE IT HARD.

I don't think it's fair to say that being a Disney product equates to being mentally F-ed. You don't know what it's like. I don't either, but I don't preach as if I do. I appreciate the celebrities (e.g.: Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lawrence) who don't complain about their fame but take every moment to express their gratitude to the outlets and people who give them the opportunity to make a buck doing what makes them (and I'm sure many qualified others if they had the chance) happy.

Good for her to be so outspoken about her mental illness. People aren't ashamed of being diabetic, why should they be ashamed of having another kind of illness. I wish her well!!!

self-mutilation, eating disorders, substance abuse should make for great tv

This girl annoys me so much. I don't know of a bigger attention seeker. Britney Spears has a lot of mental issues too, but you don't see her doing woe is me interviews every 4 minutes.

OMG it seems everyone is bi polar these days!! I think its like a grown up version of ADHD - an excuse for bad behaviour!!

Re: enjayelle – Are you kidding me???? I'm a student psychology and if you think bipolar isn't a real disease, you should inform yourself instead of making such dumb comments. ADHD and bipolar disorder have nothing to do with each other!!!!! Adhd is a development disorder en bipolar is an affective disorder (disfunction of neurotransmitters). And there is always, besides a psychological defect ,a biological defect!!!

She didn't "recently open up" about anything. The second she got caught punching her back up dancer in the face this is all she has talked about. I think she is a phony. And I don't buy it for a second.

Gosh Demi. Can you stop talking about it. We get it..!! stop talking about it!

Have a cousin who has bipolar and is always having to get her meds adjusted ; not an easy illness to deal with.

Bi-polar can be treated with medication unlike some other mental health issues.

Re: SnowQueen – Actually she did OPEN UP. She could easily denied all the rumors about her and no one would be the wiser. You say she's phony yet any other celebrity would have played the lie and deny game a while ago. You don't have to buy it at all. But as far as phony goes' you couldn't be more off. Then again your general observation is like any other idiot gossiper on this site. There really isn't a shame in suicide. Just saying.

Re: bigburger – My god, the stupidity in your statement amuses me. You don't know of a bigger attention seeker? How about the stark raving blonde that's in your icon? You know like smashing pap's cars, shaving her head and what not? You must have fallen asleep during those scandals right? Also we don't see her pulling the “woe is me interviews” Really? So then that interview she gave with diane sawyer in 2003 wasn't a victim card. Or the one she gave where she openly cried while pregnant with k fed's kids. Lets not forget her documentary back in 2008. Or 2008 in general where everyone of her interviews was a “woe is me” card. If I were you bigburger, I would go back to school. Because public education seriously didn't do you any good.

and here we go again with her problems. can she ever talk about anything else??

Barely in her 20s, sitting on millions of dollars, has all the access to all the help she needs in the world…and she still bitches.

    19

People keep saying that she keeps mentioning how she had this and that and how it’s like she's milking it.You do know the interviewer makes the questions and she just answers them.I highly doubt she wants to go into every single interview wanting to talk about her problems.People should think more before they decide to say something. On the other hand I’m glad she’s happy and healthy and before you decide to comment again on how she keeps talking about her problems remember she doesn't make the fecking questions!

Re: HV – She wouldn't have to constantly talk about it if the reporters stopped asking her about it.

  21. 21

    Re: JoJoButinsky
And if you remember YEARS before she was caught being "bi-polar" she was caught with marks on her arms that her people denied MULTIPLE times saying her bracelets were too tight. Calling me an idiot isn't making your argument more valid than mine. I'm down for an open conversation about this, but I'm not ok with being called names.
Also, as someone who has spent years working as a counselor to young teens and adults who battle these kinds of problems, it is more than rare to find someone so open to talk about it. Too the point where I find it hard to believe. And I am allowed to have my own opinion about it.

  22. Derrick says – reply to this

    22

demi wouldn't continue talking about her problems if reporters & interviewers didn't ask her. she's probably sick of all the questions. so stop bitching to demi & bitch to the interviewers.

  23. 23

As someone who also has worked with mentally handicapped people, she doesn't exhibit any symptoms of bipolar disorder or eating disorders. I am actually disgusted that she would pick every 'high profile' disease and mash them all together into one, giant plethora of problems. Substance abuse, cutting, bipolar, bulimia, you name it, and that girl will probably say she has it. It's a HUGE slap in the face for REAL people suffering with these ailments everyday. At the end of the day, which is worse: faking mental disorders for attention and money or trolling someone who makes millions off of such lies? Pretty obvious answer, but by all means, troll away.

  24. rj says – reply to this

    24

Why are y'all saying that she's an attention seeker and she's faking her problems?!!! To the person who said she didn't show any signs of an eating disorder - are you dumb or…? you don't have to be extremely skinny to have an eating disorder and anyway she was bulimic so how would you know if she was suffering or not? exactly, you don't.
Also it's becoming incredibly annoying saying that she's talking about it every minute. She doesn't choose to talk about it (well at first she did b/c she wanted people to be aware of what she went through & she wanted to help young girls w/ the same issues). I've watched interviews when she's free to talk about whatever she wants and she doesn't mention her issues once. So to all you haters, you know nothing about what she went through (neither do I) so please stop complaining and hating. Thanks

    Re: rj
I agree, and she doesn't spend her whole life in front of the camera everybody so nobody knows what is going on when she's alone, some people need to use their head before commenting.

  26. 26

Im a fan of Demi because of her talent, and I don't really know if she has or not those issues but you should not be judging her if you don't know. And I support her cuz because of being so open about it, she has helped a lot of teens suffering out there with same and other issues !!!

Re: Minty – Yes because Money means that she is immune to all the worlds problems right? I guess your theory is that money equals to NOT having bipolar issues or NOT having problems. Your grasp on the concept of common sense seems to be very loose oh simple minded one.

    28

Re: Minty – Why should she? You keep talking about and you keep MAKING it a hot topic. I guess you are unaware of how an interview process works. Education isn't just for rich people. It's your duty as a human being to educate yourself. And right now you just sound like an invalid.

  29. JoJoButtinsky says – reply to this

    29

Re: SnowQueen – OK so if she didn't TALK about her issues back when they were just RUMORS. Then she wouldn't be OPENING up about them back then because she wasn't talking about it. So how can she OPEN up about something when she wasn't talking about it back then? I'm not calling you an idiot because of name sake purpose. I honestly think you are a moron. And for the record, no self respecting counselor to young teens and adults who battle self harming issues would say something like “duh I find it hard to believe that her talking about her issues is genuine.” which tells me that you're either lying about that or you're just bad at your job. If I was a kid, I wouldn't send them to someone like you who questions someone's intent to talk about their issues when almost ANY REAL counselor would ENCOURAGE people to talk about it. If you are what you claim to be, then you're a disgrace to your profession. You should be ashamed of yourself.

“As someone who also has worked with mentally handicapped people, she doesn't exhibit any symptoms of bipolar disorder or eating disorders.”

Really? So you mean to tell me that people who suffer from eating disorders don't have huge security issues in which they actually cause self harm to them selves? It's a known fact that bipolar disorders AND eating disorders go hand in hand. And guess what is one of those symptoms for those mental disorders? SELF HARMING. For someone who supposedly worked with mentally handicapped people, you are pretty oblivious. You must really suck at your job.

“I am actually disgusted that she would pick every 'high profile' disease and mash them all together into one, giant plethora of problems.”

You are aware that these “diseases” go hand in hand right? These all have to do with SECURITY ISSUES. Eating disorders, bipolar issues, addictions and what not. Are you seriously going to say that you work with the mentally handicapped and NOT see this link? Also You are aware that there is a difference between the mentally handicapped and people with MENTAL DISORDERS right? Honestly if you are going to LIE about a supposed profession, at least do some better research into the topic at hand. Frankly it's more disgusting that you would lie about a profession like this when you don't even know the general difference between mental handicaps and mental disorders.

“Substance abuse, cutting, bipolar, bulimia, you name it, and that girl will probably say she has it. It's a HUGE slap in the face for REAL people suffering with these ailments everyday.”

Ok you know those “diseases” that you mentioned? The substance abuse, the self harming and the eating disorders? Those are called SYMPTOMS of her issues. In this case it would be her bipolar issues and her ED's and all that stuff. Thats the first thing they teach you when dealing with someone with a mental disorder. That the actions you listed above are seen as symptoms of someone's issues. Not “diseases” as you claim they are. Thats your first mistake. The second mistake is thinking that its no probable that someone puts them all together as one giant problem, when in fact its common knowledge that these symptoms STEM from one giant problem. You would think someone who worked with people who suffered from these ailments wouldn't say something so asinine like you did just now. Sorry I call BS on you.

I'll tell you what's worse. Some dip s**t lying about working with mentally disabled people and not knowing what the hell they are talking about. It's one thing to not like a celebrity for the hell of it. But it's another to blatantly make up a profession when you clearly know NOTHING about what you are talking about. That's just as bad as someone posing as a government official to gain access to someone's personal records. If anyone is a disgrace to people with sever ailments it's you. You're a pathetic excuse not just for the mentally handicapped but to humanity in general. Please do this world a favor and walk off a short pier. The world would be better off without people like you.

Re: CarlaH – You are aware that what you just said was extremely offensive not just to people who suffer from severe mental disorders but also to people who WORK in the industry that you supposedly work in right? No self respecting person who works in the field of mental health would ever portray them selves as an asinine, malcontent, uneducated, insensitive, ignoramus as you have just displayed right now. And I'm not even talking about the fact that you clearly have no clue about what you are talking about but the fact that you are so brazen to claim that she is LYING about her issues when you are basing this off of zero proof. I guess you must have been asleep throughout that part where she checked herself into a treatment center FOR said issues right? You know the treatment center that SPECIALIZED in bipolar disorders and self harming and eating disorders and what not? Nah we must have all collectively imagined her spending that time in a treatment center. Your stupidity is not only offensive but also dangerous. By all means feel free to run a rusty blade across your wrists. Make sure it cuts deep darling :)

Re: CarlaH – Really? Wow that is a very deep and informative thought process you have there Carla H. I didn't know that all it took to work with mentally handicapped people was to make random assumptions about public figures that you know NOTHING about. I mean parish the thought that I was under the impression that it took a general STUDY of said human being and actually spending TIME with that person to formulate a diagnosis about their mental health state when in reality all I had to do was read a vague interview off of cosmo and say to my self “she's lying”. I mean it's not like she spent TIME with actual DOCTORS in an official treatment center where she was diagnosed by a professional right? No not at all. I mean whoever heard of someone going to school for this kind of thing right? But my favorite part about this is where you claim she doesn't show any symptoms of being bipolar or having an eating disorder when in fact the facility she checked herself INTO specializes in those particular disorders. Plus its like not there is a correlating LINK to Substance abuse, self harming, addictions and eating disorders right? Oh wait there is? Oh wait they all go hand in hand? Oh wait you're basing your assumption of of nothing? Well that explains a lot. Lol your general stupidity amuses me. Kinda like SnowQueen and her laughably stupid attempt at trying to portray someone also works in the same field. No offense but the two of you really suck at lying :)

Re: enjayelle – Screw you. I hate people like you that say that crap. Just because more people are talking about their mental illnesses doesn't mean more people have it. You make it sound like it is a popular diagnosis to have.
