Comedian Martin Short checked in with Today to promote Madagascar 3 but had no idea what kind of unprofessionalism was in store!
Kathie asked Martin several questions about his wife, their marriage, and then pretty much invites the two of them over for Sunday brunch before Martin graciously puts a cap on the cray and tells her something she WOULD have known if she’d done her homework…
Martin’s wife Nancy died of ovarian cancer almost two years ago!!
Dayum!! You just put the “awww, awww, did she really say that?” in awkward.
Kathie came back from commercial break with a sincere apology but this is not a mistake someone with her experience should ever make.

Elizabeth did the same thing on The View a few years ago…asked Stanley Tucci what his wife thinks of the movie he just did…cept his wife had died less than a year earlier.
Even though you are right and this is an AMATURE mistake and she would probably totally be judging someone else who did the same, I am sure she felt horrible afterwards and probably cried on her car ride back to Greenwich. If she was not so righteous all the time I would feel really really bad for her. And where was her production staff?!? Did no one think to REMIND her of this tiny detail pre interview?! I hope Martin was OK afterwards. He does truly seem to be the nicest guy. He has made so many people laugh over the years (me included!) that I want to give him a hug and bake him some cookies. He was so gracious. He probably feels worse for her than he does for himself.

Ugh, this isn't the first time she hasn't done her research. When you know of the person she is interviewing and see how she doesn't do them justice because she doesn't spend the time to learn a bit about them prior to the interview, it's sad. Really sad. Come on lady, you're supposed to be a professional.

That's pretty horrible of her. I made a similar mistake with a good friend recently. I had no idea she lost her brother when he was just out of high school. She had mentioned her brother several times at dinner, so I asked what he was doing now… She was pretty mad at me but I graduated before she did, so I was gone (from the town) when her brother died and never heard about it.
I don't think she felt bad about this. For that you would need to be sober and have a soul.

Martin Short showed how much class he has… even though he could have totally embarrassed Kathy Lee, he didn't. He just acted as if his wife was still with him - and I think he really feels that way!!! Very sweet to see how much he loves her, even after her death. So NOT Hollywood… to see true love like that is amazing!!!
Isn't Kathy Lee supposed to have "handlers" who should give her all the info she needs to NOT humiliate herself and put her guest in such an awkward position? I feel for her because I think she really felt awful about it, but still. Shouldn't have happened. I was glad that she handled it the way she did, though.
