Benji Schwimmer Comes Out

The month of June is officially pride month for the LGBT community, and one reality competition winner has decided to publicly come out!

You probably remember Benji Schwimmer, the season two winner of So You Think You Can Dance, who impressed everyone with his incredible talent back in 2006!

Now, Benji has made the decision to open up about his sexuality and his life as a gay man, who, up until last year, was a devout Mormon.

Benji recently did an interview for MormonStories.org, where he talked about his experiences of being gay and Mormon and the struggles that came along with coming out.

Check out the eye-opening interview to hear about Benji’s brave and honest story HERE.

Wow, what a courageous thing to do…we are proud of you, Benji!

thats about has surprising has when Clay aiken came out.
We all knew it. I get that it can be hard to come out, but I really dont get why its such a big deal.

Many of my friends came out… did we celebrate them? Nope. We just said cool. Thats it. They are humans, they should be treated as everyone else.

If I came out and said: World, I. am. STRAIGHT! Would anyone applaud me? No. They'd say something like wow, get over yourself.

Wow, this is a nonstory. The dude was so obviously a flamer that his "coming out" was pretty much pointing out the obvious. LOL
We all know you're focused on the gay. Your obsession with it is just really sad; it's so obvious that your life is empty and that you have issues with your own sexuality; methinks thou doth protest WAY too much, you know? If it was so normal and if you were so comfortable with it, you'd be less offensively militant about it. You need counseling, Mario(n), that will help you accept your own gay which will go far in stopping you from being so aggressive about getting others to accept it.

Maybe Benji can go to the same Pray To Be Straight center Maria Osmond sent her son to before he took a nose dive off of LA's Metro apartment's 8th floor to his death….

  8. 8

There were some people who thought he was straight?

  9. 9

What a piece of trash! I bet his parents are so ashamed of him. He chooses to be gay.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves. He's an amazing person, and I love that you guys are all talking crap saying it's not a story. You're reading the article aren't you?! You clicked on the link didn't you? GROW UP!

This story is not important because a man has announced he is gay. What is important about this story is the struggle that has been documented. It's not easy to accept oneself as gay let alone someone who is devout to their religion. Especially a religion that is so anti gay. There is such a conflict here and I think it is important to listen to what Benji has to say and learn about a common struggle among gay men and women. Coming out here is not the matter. The lesson that is to be heard here is what is important and I think he should be extremely well commended for standing up and telling his story. It's one that everyone can learn from. Congrats Benji! You are extremely loved and supported around the world!

Watch the interview. Why is this news? Because in a time when we have a Mormon presidential candidate and gay people fighting for the right to marry he tells a unique and heart wrenching story about his struggles with coming out and his devout Mormon faith. I dont' care when he danced on the show the story and interview are compelling. EVERYONE should watch it. It is a beautiful story, beautifully told by a beautiful person. I have not talked to anyone who watched it whether they liked him on the show or not that was not moved. Listen before you judge. Watch before you respond.

Wow. From reading just a few comments…people are so rude, it's sad. I feel sorry for them. Way to be brave Benji! And HELL YEAH I'm gonna celebrate him! Rox- We celebrate these kinds of thing because there are people in the world who are not as cool/accepting as your friends about people coming out. There are people out there who've have harmed, bullied, threatened and even killed people who do. People have lost family over coming out. So YES he is brave and YES it is a big deal. You announcing you're straight is great and all but it's also much more socially acceptable. I can't imagine what it's like to come out as a former Mormon. So very proud of Benji! And Perez- Haters Gon Hate :) Keep doin ya thing. What the world needs now …is far fewer jerks.

  19. Kelley says – reply to this

WOW people!!!! I think you all should watch the interview and then make you sad statements. The story is not about him being gay, it is more of what he had to overcome being a Mormon and gay. Save your rude comments for someone else!!!

The reason why it's important to let people know when a "celebrity" comes out, isn't to necessarily "celebrate" it, but to help the younger generations realize that it's ok. Anyone on here who uses the argument that we don't celebrate heterosexuality is missing the point completely.

There is no need for a straight day, or recognizing straight people, because that is done every single day. You turn on any channel, or listen to music out, or see movies, look at any magazine, walk anywhere, and you will see straight couples or hear about straight couples. It is perfectly normal and accepted for people to talk about their heterosexual lives, yet when gay people kiss on a show, the general public makes a huge deal of it. The reason being that it isn't accepted completely yet.

So, by acknowledging that a celebrity is brave enough to come out and possibly have the world come down on them, is a message to our gay youth that it's okay, and that they shouldn't be afraid to be who they are.
