Meryl Streep's Advice To Hollywood Regarding Their 'Tentpole Failures': Listen To The Ladies!

meryl streep on hollywood tentpole failures

Watch out, Hollywood big-wigs!

Meryl Streep is dropping bombs left and right - TRUTH BOMBS!

The Oscar-winning actress recently addressed some major big budget flops during her presentation of the Crystal award to Viola Davis at Tuesday's Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards. She asserted that A LOT of problems have to do with the under-representation of ladies and their influence in the industry!

She explains:

“In this room, we are very familiar with these dreadful statistics that detail the shocking under-representation of women in our business. Seven to ten percent of directors, producers, writers, and cinematographers [are women] in any given year. This in spite of the fact that in the last five years, five little movies aimed at women have earned over $1.6 billion: The Help, The Iron Lady believe it or not, Bridesmaids, Mamma Mia!, and The Devil Wears Prada. As you can see, their problems were significant because they cost a fraction of what the big tent-pole failures cost. . . . Let’s talk about The Iron Lady. It cost $14 million to make it and brought in $114 million. Pure profit! So why? Why? Don’t they want the money? Alice Walker said that the most common way people give up their power is by thinking that they don’t have any. That’s like (hearing) that women don’t get raises because they don’t ask for them. It’s incredible."

Incredible, indeed!

Thankfully, we have such smart, talented, and educated women like her that aren't afraid to stand up and address a problem when it's here, and all we can hope is that Hollywood will finally catch up and start making the necessary changes!

Or they can just ignore it as they have been and continuing losing money on wrecks like John Carter and Battleship!

Just saying!

She is right on, and one of the reasons this movie freak has not seen a movie since November. Holllywood needs to make more movies that appeal to women, they have lots of money and sometimes on a date determine which movie to see.

And stop with the remakes already and sequels OK?

I love that she seperates WOMEN from GIRLS. Films like Iron Lady etc are aimed at women, not teenage girls. There is a massive difference.

What's stopping Meryl from putting her big money , where her big mouth is ????

In my opinion, Meryl is the most over rated actress, since Betty Hutton
Every movie she makes, she emotes, not acts, and fucks it up

When you want to see a really good actress, just look at Vanessa Redgrave

She is so right! I loved The Help, and I loved The Iron Lady. I also loved Buffy. I love movies and TV shows about empowered women. My current favorite TV show, The Closer, with another strong woman as the lead, is about to end, and there is very little left for me to watch.

Re: Fitzzz – If you think Meryl Streep is a bad actress than that's nothing more than just bad judgement on your part.

Great article about a REAL star! More of this kind of stuff & less on the Largeashians or Dita Von Jug Face Fetish model who is only famous for marrying Marilyn Manson.
    Thanks for this awesome piece.

Oh give me a break. No one in Hollywood is suppressing women or keeping them down. Hollywood is fueled by greed. Do you honestly think if a woman director or writer presented a head honcho something he knew would make money he would say nope and its because you're a woman. Give me a break, doesn't happen. EVER. Women are just unable to admit they are the inferior gender. Just because you're a woman does not mean you're special. It also does not mean you should get handouts just to equal the playing field. Did it ever occur to people that, maybe, possibly women just aren't as talented as men in the writing/directing department?

Meryl is fantastic!!! I love movies (I'm a woman) and I'd want there to be more of those for us. She's great for saying it out loud, thank you Meryl!
