Tyler Clementi's Roommate Released From Jail After Just 20 Days

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayLegal Matters

Dharun Ravi released from jail

So much for 30 days in jail.

Dharun Ravi, the 20-year-old Rutgers student connected to the death of Tyler Clementi in 2010, is a free man after serving just 20 days of his 30-day jail sentence.

He was convicted of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation last month for filming Clementi being intimate with another man, which unfortunately led to the college student's suicide.

Ravi was released 10 days early because of good behavior and now faces 300 hours of community service on top of his 3-year probation.

We're not exactly thrilled by his mild punishment. Considering his actions resulted in the loss of a human life, 20 days in jail isn't even a slap on the wrist — it's a flick!

There's nothing we can do about it though, so we just hope Ravi learned his lesson and will NEVER disrespect someone like this again!

He's free now to date Kim Kardashian — think of the fabulous sex tape they could make!

  3. 3

He may have gotten out 10 days early for his "good behavior" (what a joke), but he will have to live with his despicable actions for the rest of his life. I hope he learned his lesson. RIP Tyler!

  4. 4

He didn't kill himself because of this guy! Ask his mother why!!!!

Re: cookoo4no1 – I'm opposed to gay marriage, and I am not in favor of accepting homosexual sex as normal; I think it is deviant. I do, though, believe that it's not a choice. That said, I do think that the roommate got off damned lightly when one considers the fact that his thoughtless actions resulted in the suicide of another. Ravi should've had a much harsher sentence; even I think he got a light slap on the wrists (community service and probation is NOT an appropriate punishment). I am not ignorant, nor am I making any trashy comments; you should be ashamed of making such an assumption. I can be against something but still see the injustice in this specific situation.

Yes it was in complete violiation Of tyler's privacy, but this guy is no way directly responsible for his death. Tyler has way more personal/emotional problems that were never diagnosed. Someone doesnt commit suicide because of 1 or 2 incidents. All he should of gotten was a hefty fine.

According to your thinking, if a celebrity ever commits suicide, the cops should come and slap the cuffs on you. You've done a million times worse and you've done it on a daily basis for years.

No, the one who got away with murder was his co-conspirator, that asian girl who sold him out and got off scott-free.

What Mr Ravi did by invading Mr Clementi's privacy was vindictive and humiliating. I am sure it played a part in Mr Clementi's decision to kill himself but I promise you it wasn't the only reason. If it wasn't Mr Ravi's despicable actions it would have been something else that was the catalyst for Mr Clementi finally killing himself. It would have happened anyhow.

Shut up, this wasn't a hate crime. An awful, dispicable thing to do yes, but he did the same to other (straight) guys. He didn't target Clementi because of his homosexuality. That's key.

  13. 13

wow, so being convicted of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, witness tampering and hindering arrest only gets you 20 days in jail? how nice for him. didn't that guy who spied on erin andrews get like 2yrs? ravi was also convicted of encouraging others to spy during a second date, and intimidating clementi for being gay. while i don't believe the invasion of privacy was the only reason clementi committed suicide, it could have been the straw that broke the camels back as they say. the fact that dharun ravi is a felon with 15 convictions but only had to serve 20 days just seems ridiculous to me.

Re: Flea – Agree. Perez posted pics of Dustin Lance Black having gay sex on his website for millions of people to see. Perez is an offender

  15. 15

Re: cookoo4no1 – Waiting for cookoo4no1 to realize this was not a gay issue. Ah forget it, I can't count that high.

    16

i wonder Perez, if one of the celebrities, especially the young ones, ever would have decided to commit suicide due to the horrible venom you always spewed, what would be a proper punishment for you?

  17. 17

Re: AttFinch – Why didn't you crusade against Hilton for posting Dustin Lance Black's sex video? Did the fact that Black wasn't unstable enough to kill himself make it acceptable? Hilton is as guilty as this guy, but because Ravi is straight, gays like Hilton will make sure there's the underlying straight against gay angle.

  18. 18

He was so stupid not to take a plea, now everyone knows his name, what he did, and that he was not punished.

The entire case was over-charged, and never should have been filed. If it weren't for race and nationality issues here, he never would have been charged in the first-place. This was a simple college prank, concerning two roommates that didn't like each other. This was not gay bashing, he just didn't like his roommate, and his roommate didn't like him. The suicide probably would have happened anyway, but we will never know if it was this incident that motivated it, or not, but ultimately it was up to the person who took his own life. I met a girl recently, she lied to me about her intentions, and she was a user, and never apologized. You think, should I take my life over it, and quickly say no, though you feel very badly, and you just go on, and you try to deal with the pain. Taking your life will not change a thing. I think most people who commit suicide, are very sensitive souls. They are good people, who are better than the world they were given, and so they just can't deal with this place, and I perfectly understand, but I think about my family, and I think about the impact on them, and unselfishly, I place them first, not myself, or my immediate needs. The roommate is not to blame, this was a choice.

Re: Lady Who? – oh so now i know why you are on here every day writing stupid comments. you consider yourself a "crusader". i guess that's just a nicer way of saying homophobic troll. i do think it's cruel to post nude photos of celebs (of course unless they leak them themselves) and generally don't bother to check them out, however once the photos go viral hiltons site is just one of thousands that you see them at. do you also troll all those other sites that post nude celeb pics or just hiltons. if not is it because he's gay? your a pretty transparent person and for someone who has written thousands of hateful comments not just about hilton but also about celebrities like you have to now come across with this fake indignation is laughable. and for you to compare a blogger who has reposted nude photos of a celebrity that has already been seen all over the internet to what dharun ravi did to tyler clementi just shows how truly out of touch you are with reality.

  21. 21

Stop blaming this guy for another dude's suicide!! The other guy was mentally ill. He wasn't pushed off that bridge! I've had embarrassing things happen to me and I didn't kill myself! Sick of this gay agenda!

  22. 22

All he did was out some fruit, something you've done plenty of Mario.

  23. 23

Re: AttFinch – Lmao, you're a fucking moron who is desperately trying to justify your argument with the fact that because pics are posted elsewhere then it's ok for Hilton to also post them. Doesn't matter if a video is posted once or a thousand times, that's irrelevant, the resulting outcome could be the same. And you wrote the book on transparent, you're just another gay who thinks the world should revolve around your agendas, you don't want equality you want preferential treatment. But thanks for reading all my posts, it's nice to know how much they irritate you. And please work on that lisp.

  24. 24

Re: AttFinch – Bravo AttFinch! Lady Who is is a major homophobic! All of her posts scream "I am ignorant, and hate gay people" It's sad, because most of the posters on here tolerate her????

I can't believe that anyone would try to imply that this man had a direct connection to the others death! I am a gay man and for one am sick of hearing about Tyler Clementi being a victim of Dharun. Yes, he crossed a line and invaded privacy but Tyler made the decision to do what he did… and it was a heart breaking decision. My heart goes out to Tyler Clementi's family but it also goes out to this young man who has now become the whipping post for everything that is "bullying".

  26. 26

Re: TBone – Whipping post? He could have made a plea like Molly Wei did, but he chose to face the charges. Stupidly, and now everyone knows his name!

the fact of the matter is, whether tyler was gay or not, it was invasion of privacy. If it had been a girl getting dressed and he did this people would be in an uproar and he would've gotten way more then what he got, and probably would be put on a sexual predator list. He invaded somebody's privacy, and he put it all over the internet. then he lied, tampered with the evidence, etc. plus, it was on a college campus. Tyler may have had some things going on that made him emotional, but if Ravi didn't do this there would have been time for him to seek help. but this sent him over the edge. Out of all of this despicable behavior, Ravi had the indecency to laugh, and even fall asleep during his trial. Then his parents came in and begged and pleaded and claimed racism because he's Indian. He should have gotten more of a hefty sentence.

Re: Omniscient Gal – yes…u are ignorant. just accept it. im sure back in the 60's there were plenty of people who said it was their "OPINION" that blacks are inferior. and look how history has written that type of person. so all u idiot homophobes are doing is cementing urself in the history books as the new lynch mob. it was hitlers "OPINION" that jews were inferior as well.

This guy did not kill the gay dude. Kids are soft these days. Instead of solving problems, they want to kill themselves. We as a society want to blame someone. How about we blame the person that was selfish in killing themselves.

Omniscient Gal, Lady Who…throw in Truth Dude and La Garse…they're all the same fuckin' person. He/She trolls on here every day, hoping one day they'll get that elusive reply from Perez, and in the rare moment that he does reply and calls out their shit, they lose their fuckin' minds. It's quite hilarious, actually.

it CONTRIBUTED to his death - it did not lead to his death. Suicide is a very unfortunate thing and I have lost people to suicide BUT it is important to realize that in the end the person killed themself and others can only one of many factors not the sole cause

Re: Deja Vu – At least he stood up and admitted to his mistake. Its a far cry from actions that many people take today. Everyone would rather blame someone else and take a "plea bargain" instead of owning their actions. Makes me respect him a bit more than the rest

I don't think it's right to hold someone responsible for the suicide of another. Nobody made Tyler commit suicide it was an action he thought about and then went through with himself. Though Dharun's actions were horrible holding him responsible for Tyler's death is just wrong. They charged him with what they could but honestly when it comes to Tyler's death the person responsible is Tyler because he felt suicide was the only option he had and it wasn't

  35. 35

One has to be mentally ill to actually commit suicide. I cant blame Ravi for the death of Tyler. It was a very douchey thing to do, but I won't side with people that say he was the cause of death and he certainly shouldnt have been locked up for that long. Invasion of privacy very rarely even gets jail time.
