This isn't a demotion at all. These rules were put in place when Camilla married Charles. It was done to make sure that people like Princess Anne, who spends her life serving the Queen, didn't have to curtsey to Camilla when she had just joined the family. In fact, Anne always refused to curtsey to Diana for the same reason! This is just an extension of the rules already in place. If it was a matter of favourites then Kate would have to curtsey to Sophie (who the Queen loves). But she doesn't, so it's clearly just a formality.
Royalty is just so outdated. The monarchy doesn't do anything to lead the country. They are out of touch figureheads. Having studied abroad in England and making many English friends, most of them don't care about this family. They all think the queen is crazy.
But given the lifespan these people seem to have, Kate won't be queen till she's Elizabeth's age, so she's going to be stuck with these dumb rules for a long time.
