A source close to the situation explained:
How does the world's pre-eminent cable news network make this kind of mistake???
CNN incorrectly reported on Sunday that Gotye committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a 9mm handgun!!
Gotye, of course, denies reports of his untimely demise. He tweeted:
I'm not dead. #Pinkalbumtitles
— gotye (@gotye) July 1, 2012
Ha! Nice Pink reference!
Tim Shiel, a musician currently touring with the "undead" artist, also joined in on the fun. He tweeted:
it saddens me to confirm the news of @gotye's passing- he suffered cardiac arrest while flying a unicorn over a double rainbow
— Tim Shiel (@timshiel) July 1, 2012
We're glad you and your bandmates thought the ordeal was HIGHlarious!
Still, we're worried about overworked guys and gals at CNN — what exactly went wrong?
Bad vetting, it seems.
This is the story CNN iReport "broke":
"At 4:32 AM EST, it was reported that Gotye had shot himself in the head with a 9mm handgun… He was pronounced dead at 4.45AM, and the investigation concluded that the cause of death was suicide."
Wow!! Get your facts straight, CNN!
Everyone is prone to messing up dates or misspelling names once in awhile but, when you rush to inform the world that a music superstar has taken his own life, you had better make sure you know what you're talking about!!!
Talk about some news source that we used to trust!!
We can only imagine this "breaking news" breaking the hearts of Gotye's fans, friends, and family!
What if Gotye's mother was watching CNN when the horrible misinformation scrolled by on the ticker??
