Steel Magnolia's Remake: We Wanna Know Whyyy!?

| Filed under: TV NewsFilm FlickersQueen LatifahJill Scott

Oh, tears spring to our eyes at the mere THOUGHT of Robert Harling's heart-wrenching love-filled drama that is Steel Magnolias!

And while we adore the new cast that make up the forthcoming Lifetime remake of the 1989 film, we must ask WHY remake such a classic, sentimental production?

But, originality is a dying art and we understand that twerks on original works can be just as powerful, if not more so, than their initial inspirations!

Ch-ch-check out the trailer (above) for Tony nominee Kenny Leon's version of Steel Magnolias starring Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, Phylicia Rashad, Alfre Woodard, and Adepero Oduye.

Obvi we will be glued to out televisions with an armament of kleenex on hand, whenever Lifetime decides to air this epic tale!

This is so disturbing! WHY would they vandalize and destroy such a flawless, well-loved, classic movie like "Steel Magnolias"?!

Could they at least stop perpetuating the outdated notion that women with diabetes cant have children? Or shake and moan when eir BG s low- give shelby the juice, ugh.

Steel Magnolias was originally a play. It's all fair game, just like the thousands of Shakespeare adaptations… jeez, get a grip!!!

Obviously instead of coming up with something new and original they have to take another classic and turn it into a black version for the black crowd. That fact that the lead actresses are all black should've told you that.

Steel Magnolia's was one of the BEAT plays I've been to in my live! I laughed and cried and did neither…NEITHER during the horrible movie. If the movie would have been more like the play it would have been golden. Maybe they'll get it right the second time around. I was young, traveled to New York (Broadway!) w/my Mom and saw Les Miserables, Cats, and Steel Magnolias (off broadway) and to this day my Mom and I talk about the magic of Steel Magnolias. Btw, the entire play takes place in the hair salon only!

    Black Steel Magnolias

I'm not for the remake at all! The only difference is that the cast is black which I don't agree with it either! This was a true story (on the special edition dvd the director talks about it) and those women were white. Plus, I love Queen Latifah, I do, but there's no way she's going to top Sally Field's performance!!

My mom sent me the link for this "new" version. Im not really sure why. I am disgusted. There are so many BETTER things venues to invest money in. This is ridiculous, and as someone who has had this story and its characters somehow etched into my heart, I find it offensive. I thought we had come further as a society. These women will NEVER come CLOSE to the original casts' ability to weave this story and draw you in emotionally. This is not a step in a positive direction for african americans or ANY american. It is petty and a waste of time. Shame on you lifetime and shame on you queen latifah. You are a fool for even attempting this. And as for women with diabetes "not being able to have babies" being a perpetuated myth.. it isnt. Just as in the movie, she COULD have a child, the doctor said that she SHOULDNT. She was an extreme case.. juvenile onset diabetes that was already affecting her kidneys/peripheral circulation. Diabetes and pregnancy is no joke. These children are at risk for MANY health problems after birth and many are pre-disposed to similar health problems in later life. I will not waste my time watching this garbage, I will not increase lifetime's viewing audience for this type of CRAP..if I could vote for a ban from airing it - I would. Very few things in life are perfect- the few thag are should be left that way.
