Russell Simmons Applauds Frank Ocean's Courage!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayMusic MinuteWhen Celebrities BlogLGBT

Frank Ocean is getting lots of support from the hip-hop community after opening up about his sexuality on his website.

One of his biggest supporters, however, is Russell Simmons.

The Def Jam co-founder wrote a touching piece on the Global Grind to applaud Frank on his courageous decision.

Russell wrote:

Today is a big day for hip-hop. It is a day that will define who we really are. How compassionate will we be? How loving can we be? How inclusive are we?

I am profoundly moved by the courage and honesty of Frank Ocean. Your decision to go public about your sexual orientation gives hope and light to so many young people still living in fear. These types of secrets should not matter anymore, but we know they do, and because of that I decided to write this short statement of support for one of the greatest new artists we have.

His gifts are undeniable. His talent, enormous. His bravery, incredible. His actions this morning will uplift our consciousness and allow us to become better people. Every single one of us is born with peace and tranquility in our heart. Frank just found his.

Frank, we thank you. We support you. We love you.

-Russell Simmons

We couldn't have said it better ourselves!

We only hope others in the industry will be as accepting as Russell.

I wonder how many of the other "tough guy" punkass thugs are working the down low.
Got all those half naked broads shakin it and they are really thinking about weezy's hersey highway.

Of course this asshat racist will jump on any chance he gets..People like Al Sharpton and this guy thinks they are gods and take it upon themselves to be the official spokesmen for blacks..Man I'd love it if an actual highly respected black guy like Denzel, Morgan Freeman, etc told guys like Al Sharpton and Russel Simons to stfu.

Russell's always been the one with brains.

I always thought R Simmons was a good guy changed by his religion.
If I am wrong, shoot me.
That series that his wife, Kimora, fat neck created? The only smart thing she said was that angels are black too. All races, everybody. She had bad taste though…that ugly gold purse.. All that Hello Kittah crap.
How can she make a have a very heavily fatso pregnant swollen pr beautiful woman work?
    That's why Russ is über-omni-cool.

Russell Simmons is always ready to throw his name into any black news story. Wasn't he the guy who ran around telling everyone he ended the feud between Chris Brown & Drake?

    Oh what a surprise,
Perez is doing a positive piece of Russell
and in turn Russell is advertising on Perez
I think at one time that was called PAYOLA

The card Russell offers looks like it takes advantage of poor people, shame on him

Re: NookiesWA – You think Russell Simmons is a racist? You're the pot calling the kettle black… Some of the racist shit you spread on this site is jaw-dropping.

Re: joethehobo – I actually back up my racism with statistical facts. As in, blacks have the highest incarceration rate per capita. The majority of our prisons are blacks, blacks have the highest welfare recipients per capita, etc. Huge difference in just calling someone a N for no reason. I call them N's when they act like N's

Re: NookiesWA – Who sounds like the racist here? You do. I am no fan of rap music, but, what has Russell Siimons ever said that could be deemed as racist? And though I have usually not cared for Rev. Sharpton's grand standing, I have come to view him differently in light of his efforts to bring the Trayvon Martin case to the public consciousness. I watched when the story was struggling for recognition and how Rev. Sharpton used his clout to change that. I also applaud his efforts as far back as the Civil Rights movement. So just like I am sure you don't appreciate being "broad stroked", it is unfair to broad stroke anyone including the two figures you have chosen to do so. You then sound like what Perez claims he no longer wants to be.

Considering that it has rumored for years that the testosterone-fueled hip hop/rap community has had its own number of closeted gays and lesbians, I applaud this young man's forthright declaration. I have no idea who he is. But I know it took an act of self-worth to make such an acknowledgment, possibly endangering his core audience's loyalty.

Russel Simmons is a real man! Real men are sensitive and caring, and unafraid! Frank Ocean is brave, and a real man!
I think every one should be out and proud!
Young teens should not have to hide who they are, there is no shame in being left handed, or blue eyed, or gay! Its all a matter of how you are born!
