Elton John Tells Matt Lauer On Today Why He Waited To Come Out

Because nobody asked him!

Elton John came out of the closet in a 1976 issue of Rolling Stone, but in a recent interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show, the rock star explained that he would have come out sooner had someone asked.

However, coming out was the least of his concerns. He revealed that he feels guilty for wasting such a big part of his life to live the rock and roll lifestyle instead of joining the fight against AIDS in the early 80s.

Now he's making up for lost time and is not only raising massive amounts of money for a cure, but he's fighting the stigma associated with the disease, as well as discrimination against the LGBT community.

Watch Elton's inspirational interview (above) to find out why he feels lucky to be alive, how he's honoring those who lost their lives to AIDS and how he feels about Barack Obama's support for same-sex marriage.

"… the rock star explained that he would have come out sooner had someone asked." What a bunch of horseshit! He was so rabidly in denial that he'd married a woman. And if anyone ever asks Elton John questions he doesn't like, he acts like a temperamental old queen having a hissy fit. Always has, always will. He is SUCH a god-damned liar. It took him so long to come out because he was afraid for his bottom line. He's almost as big a hypocrite as YOU are, Mario. That man wouldn't know the truth if it bit him in the balls. There is no one better at revisionist history than Elton John.

Yes, he has done quite a bit for charity, I'll give him that. But when he cozies up to a noted homophobe like Eminem on stage, it gives me pause. More recently, he performed at the wedding reception for Rush Limbaugh….who is not known for being accepting. There's a bit of hypocrisy there.

    Old news and boring.

Elton John has been doing a lot of charity concerts for the last few years… One of the best one that I saw was when he invited Donna Summer & Barry Manillow. The Trio did the trick for all the fans and besides that all the big financial contributions to the AIDS associations ! Go Elton!

I was at a Elton John Concert in with my young kids in Paris over 15 years ago. Elton John really impressed me with his musical ability. The concert was amazing and I am still till this day will never forget how amazing this concert was. What a wonderful, truly talented person who can change things in the right direction. I feel bless to have just a talented person like him that is able to make the world a better place. God Bless Sir Elton John.

Seriously who cares when or why he came out, he has to do what he is comfortable with.

On another note I would love to see him in concert, but since I am a senior living on a fixed income, will probably never get to see him in my lifetime. Wishing him the best though.
