Ugh! Not another incident like this!
We are deeply saddened to hear that a gunman in Oak Creek, Wisconsin open fired in a Sikh temple on Sunday. Before being shot by police officers arriving on the scene, the unidentified 40-year-old white male killed six people and injured three with no apparent motive.
"Nobody's angry here. We're just confused. Was this a random act? Was this directed at us because of the way we look?"
Sadly, that may be the case. Sikh men have been subject to hate crimes since 9/11 because they are confused for Muslims or Hindus.
In fact, ever since a Sikh man was killed in Arizona in apparent retaliation for the attacks on the World Trade Center, chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education said:
"There's always an apprehension and a sense of fear that this kind of incident will take place anywhere, anytime."
Such a shame that their fears were realized!
While we can't imagine the pain and heartache that the congregation is feeling right now, we never imagined an incident like this would happen so soon after the massacre in Aurora, Colorado. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families!
