Justin Bieber Faces Fire Over Racist Comment!

justin bieber racist comment

Free gas is not worth this much!

Get ready Beliebers! Cuz your highness, Justin Bieber, has brewed a cup of controversy for himself. And it's HOT!

After he made the following comment in a Rolling Stone interview, the Congress of Native Peoples had to fire back.

First, here's what Justin said to RS:

"I'm actually part Indian. I think Inuit or something? I'm enough percent that in Canada, I can get free gas."

But the Congress of Native Peoples says it's simply not true. And then The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples chimed in with their unhappiness too:

"These kinds of remarks are another example of what Aboriginal peoples in Canada struggle with every day. It promotes the misconception that we are somehow getting a free ride. This simply is not the case and we are concerned that many people may believe what he said."

So naturally, internet commenters have taken to their soap boxes to bash the Biebs. It's so bad, we hear the Congress has urged people to take it easy on him.

Gas might be expensive, but so are offensive comments! Clearly!

Dramatic over nothing much? People please. Although it wasn't a smart joke, it was not derived from hate. People need to calm down.

"Aboriginal peoples?" Are they KIDDING ME? Look: Everyone came out of Europe/Asia/Africa via land bridge. They're really no more "native" to North America than any of the rest of us are … they've just been here a little longer. I don't know or care what advantages the Indians in Canada get, but I know here in the U.S., they sure as hell DO get a bunch of breaks. That they live in poverty is a choice they make. And to the liberals who think they know it all and want to chastise me: Fuck off. I am a large percentage of a specific tribe, and I know what the "native Americans" get. They want it ALL handed to them in "payment" for land they never owned, just like the darkies of today still think that whites owe them a free ride for slavery none of the darkies has ever experienced. I wish everyone would stop their fucking whining and DO something productive with their lives.

    I see nothing racist here.

We live in such a pvssy/feminist society in which everyone tries so hard to be offended.

Indians should get over themselves already. Every country on this planet is essentially multicultural. They should stop expecting to get everything free, while they use mainstream schools and services. Or expect to stay on a reserve and never leave!

  5. 5

It's certainly "insensitivity to Aboriginal people" day today … first Lauer now Bieber.

  7. 7

I don't think Beiber meant to be derogatory. He is just stupid. That comment is right up there with his 16th chapel comment, and his comment that Prince WIlliam should use Rograine.

I'm aboriginal(Inuit) from the north coast of Canada, and I found what he said to be offensive. First of all. To the idiots who think that we don't even matter in the first place- who the fuck do you think you are? Yes we are a minority group, but does that mean that you think you can abuse us? If this was about chinese/black culture it would be a whole different story. We still matter.
Those who don't agree that it's offensive probably don't realize that Indians and Inuit are NOT the same thing! We are DIFFERENT groups! Different language, different culture, hell we even look different. I do NOT get free gas, nor do I expect to get anything handed to me. The fact that he gets free gas because his "Indian, Inuit or something" is insulting, insulting that it isn't even true, and "or something" should suffice. Also that he doesn't even know the difference himself, and has the nerve to say something so ignorant. We are people, we deserve respect.

  15. 15

Ummm … natives in Canada don't get free gas. And to receive a most of the subsidies, one must reside on crown land which he clearly doesn't do.

  16. 16

So many misleading headlines lately. Absolutely NOTHING said was even the slightest bit racist here. Uneducated and flippant maybe, but doesn't one have to say something derogatory to be racist? He didn't say (and i certainly don't mean this or believe it to be true, just an example) "native people are lazy and get everything for nothing", he said "I get X because I'm part native". It's dumb, but involves absolutely no racism. I am a white woman, would I be racist against myself for saying "I'm white so my skin burns easier in the sun"? The whole title of this article is slanderous.

  17. 17

Re: Yes You Bore Me – They ARE aboriginal. They were here longer than just 'a little longer' than us - try THOUSANDS & THOUSANDS of years minding their own business & only 120 years ago we forced them off their land at gunpoint, kill their food source so they have to depend on us & try to assimilate them when most of them didn't want to assimilate & then take their knowledge of how to survive their way away so they don't know how to survive the way they had for thousands & thousands of years & now they're just trying to hold on to who they are & live in a modern world. Yes many of them are lazy & chose to drink instead of doing anything but not all of them do that. Do they leave everything they know & the land that is theirs (so we can build building on it and pollute it and ruin it in the name of money) and assimilate into our society or should they try and live on the rez and make it. I think they can, they just need to try harder. I think if we let the fucking Spanish keep their culture and even put half our shit in spanish for them then why wouldn't we accommodate the ppl we stole this land from? If they have everything handed to them then why are the reservations so sh*ty and riddled w poverty and alcohol and crime and suicide? It's obviously not THAT easy.

Re: TinaFeySucks – That is what overly politically correct liberals are doing to this country. In a liberals mind "pft what are rights?!" Since they took our 1st and threw it right out the window. They are trying really hard to get our 2nd thrown out the window. They ignore our 4th amendment being violated everyday in the most liberal states in the nation.

You can't even breath without offending someone these days. When and where will it end?

  21. 21

I read that when he first did the interview, and honestly just thought it was ignorant. I don't mean ignorant in the rude sense, but ignorant in the 'he had no clue what the hell he was talking about' sense. I'm Canadian, we learn about the treaties and whatnot and the people that know their stuff know that it was just a stupid comment and he's kind of dim. With that said, he should also learn a bit about his heritage and nationality before making comments like that, period.

  22. 22

Re: bree311 – First Nations people in Ontario are exempt from the provincial gas tax of 14.7 cents per litre if they have a gas card (issued by the Ministry of Finance) – but that’s only if they’re buying gas on a reserve.

  26. 26

One of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard, he made what is most likely a true statement, and in no way racist. Canadians as a people are not racist and far more accepting than Americans are of just about every race and lifestyle. Stop trying to vilinize the kid, truth is he's a good guy who made money because he worked hard to get noticed with the right people. I commend him. I'm seriously ashamed sometimes that I come on this site to read anything, because 90% of it is a load of unproven gossip and garbage.

  29. g says – reply to this

    29

But In Canada they don't get free gas, but they get money off of gas and cigarettes if they're treaty indian. They don't pay as much taxes on those items. EXAMPLE a carton of cigarettes costs on average $90. They pay $50.

  30. 30

I'm from Canada and natives here do get a lot of advantages. government loans, education, benefits, and so on and so on. I could never understand why. So, Biebs is on point here.

  31. g says – reply to this

    31

Native Americans in Canada do not have to live on crown land to receive a percentage of taxes off certain things (Cigarettes and gas for sure like I said) At least not in the prairies. They just have to go to reserve run stores. ”Indians”(Native Americains) and Inuit are not the same at all. It isn't racist to say that they get certain things, free no, discounted yes. He could have worded it better. I have ALOT of Native Friends and I am part Native myself (what Canadian born citizen isn't)

  32. 32

Um well, they actually do get a lot of free things…like not paying property taxes…or entire taxes (GST or PST I can't remember), free prescriptions, free education, they're pretty much taken care of. I live in Thunder Bay and the situation here is astonishing. Lots of resentment. Every single person on the Ft. Williams First Nation just got a $35k cheque from the government handed to them, and everyone who worked and paid taxes paid for it. Where's my $35k cheque??

  35. 35

Re: KimberlyM – You know you are lying through your teeth, now, do you ?

(Forgot that the white man took their lands, pushed them in reserves and tried very much to exterminate them.)

  36. Equality for All says – reply to this

    36

If you give one of your kids everything and the other kid gets nothing unless they work for it, there will be resentment. Regardless of reasons.
I work and have to pay 40% of my income to taxes on every pay check, natives do not pay any taxes if they work on reserve land. IF they do pay tax and do not work on reserve land - they apply at income tax time and receive it all back. (Yes sir - my co-workers do it)
Also, 100% tax free when purchasing items on reserve land - BUT if they DO pay taxes - again, save all receipts and receive it all back at income tax time. Not to mention all the other benefits received for education, medical, optometrist, business start up etc etc. Enough is enough.
Equality for all - all should pay tax to keep the country going (I can barely survive with all the tax I pay) and stop the resentment so we can work together to fight against the things that really matter! (Climate, natural resources and environment).

dont pay our outrageous taxes that make most of the middle class and lower class canadians broke they do get a fucking free ride, think about it if my husband didnt have to pay tax on his paycheques he would bring hom3 another $2000 a paycheque they get off really fucking easy

  38. Non-ya says – reply to this

    38

im Aboriginal and what he says is not true at all, none of us natives get gas free what so ever we pay like every other normal person and the only thing we get for free is 5 bucks every year from the damn queen and thats like getting a slap from the bitch….lmao i never take it cuz it means fuckk all to me

  39. 39

Re: Lady Who? – nah he has some abnormal

  40. 40

Re: Beth – You've made some pretty blanketed comments, so here are some facts. 1. Native Canadians are subject to the same tax rules as all Canadian residents unless the income is earned on a reserve, bought on or delivered to a reservce. 2. The tax exemption for Native property situated on a reserve has existed since before Confederation and the purpose of the exemption is to ensure that the tax doesn't erode the use of Native property or reservce. Native property not on a reserve is subject to tax just like every other Canadian. 3. Employment income is tax exempt only if the income is generated in/by and situated on a reserve. 4. CPP/EI/QPP/RPP/etc are all reduced by Native income tax exemptions. So feel free to keep whining about your first world standard of living. If you think the Natives have it so easy, then go live on a reserve and log and fish and hunt for a living to get a few tax exemptions, then compare the two. My guess is you'll be running back to your cozy home, big screen tv and all the other amenities you take for granted as a non-Native Canadian. Your racism is appalling.

    49

Re: WowzaChildRe: WowzaChild – You don't have a clue because you're too lazy to look and inquire beyond your own little world and comfort zone, to expand your mind, just like this twat who doesn't even know his own heritage, nor does he obviously care, proven by his display of ignorance.
Not only has the Canadian gov't broken treaties with aboriginals in Canada in order to maintain land ownership over them but those same broken promises have slaughtered millions of natives throughout Canadian history.

  50. TeamMariah says – reply to this

    50

Re: WowzaChild – It is indeed pertinent to provide aboriginals with some sense of equality and equity in order to develop better relations through forms of affirmative actions, including free post-secondary education and the like. Moreover, it is often difficult for natives to take advantage of these services in the first place as a history of abuse within and without the reserves have hindered the majority of natives from the get-go. That means that after years of plundering resources and exploitation of native communities they have been left with little resources to get a head start, thereby limiting their chances to take advantage of those "benefits". More specifically, in native reserves there exist an extreme lack of resources, including equal distribution of wealth, child care, educational materials, shelter and even health care, all of which causes many natives to be left behind even before they hit secondary schools. All of these inequities are not the fault of the natives as was previously explained.
So yes, his comment is derogatory in that he is stating something that is false and completely out of context to illustrate an image of a people that he obviously knows nothing about. Therefore, it is racist, however implicit (racism comes in many forms and this is one of them).
Of course, to expect anything more from this ignorant idiot is like expecting for Mars to be hospitable.

  58. 58

ignorant, not racist. but its definitely offensive. the aboriginal people of canada have had a long past with our federal government that if you are not educated on you should not speak of (it just pisses people off, exhibit a^). inuits are not "indians" because they given "indian status" by the indian act. they have their own treaties from the federal government. seeing how most inuits live in the north, and the biebs is from southern ontario, hes probably wrong (maybe iroquois or another). aboriginal people have to deal with a lot of false assumptions from the public, like that they get handed to them, when really many reserves have accommodations below standard. so yes, they freaked out. but hey, this kid thought the sistene chapel was the sixteeneth. he is an idiot.

  59. demode says – reply to this

    59

I grew up just 30 minutes away from Beiber's home town of Stratford, Ontario. Sadly, he seems to have the same attitude that most Canadians I know have about Natives. I don't think he meant to be racist at all; he just comes across as naive, and is probably just repeating what he was told growing up. He seems to be mistaking the word 'Inuit' (ie: eskimos) for Metis, which is the name given to people who have some native ancestry in their family line. He probably does have some native blood in him from his great grandparents. If he lived on Native Reserve, he might qualify for a status card, but I highly doubt it, as he would be to many generations removed from qualifying. Status cards don't give Natives "free gas", but it does except them paying taxes on most things.

I'm from Canada, and the natives here do get so many free breaks, that they don't take advantage of, which is sad cause they could go to people who actually wants them. And really he was right about the free gas, so his comments aren't really offensive.

  61. ventura says – reply to this

    61

Ridiculous that we have gotten to a point where this is viewed as offensive. The reality is that Native Americans in the United States actually do get a ton of breaks. 71

Oh my goodness, most of these coments I read were hurtfull to know that people in this generation still beleive, Native Americans not 'Indians' get everthing given to them that is not true because, knowing the facts what happend in Canada during the Residental School timeing was depressing, being as small as 5 years of age taken away from your family and home, not being able to talk your language, getting your hair cut off, just because the goverment wanted to make the Native Americans disaper .This casued many to be tramatized and scared it also started some bad habbits ,which was past down to there childeren. But from healing from the pain and depression helped many strong Young Native Americans know life is not easy and still many people do stereo-type and have bad judgement which is sad.Know we are becoming succesfull in life becoming doctors , lawyers , acters ,models and so on…..but im happy and proud to be a Cree Native American, I hope many of you will understand we do not get everything given to us we also have lives and go to work ,go to school ,pay bills , pay taxes and live in citys. So basically yes I do think Justin Bieber does owe an apology to many Native Americans because ,he has alot young beliebers and media seeing what his actions are,but personally I think he should think twice before what he says, words do really hurt.
