Disney Sued For Discriminating Against Muslim Disneyland Employee!

Disneyland sued for discrimination against muslim employee

This is NOT good for Disney's wholesome image!

The massive conglomerate has been sued by the American Civil Liberties Union because the company allegedly fired a Muslim employee at Disneyland in 2010 because she wore her hijab headscarf at work.

Even before being terminated, Imane Boudlal says she received insults from her employees AND supervisors because of her religion, origin and skin color. In fact, some went so far as to call her a terrorist, a camel and a bitch all while they carelessly accused Arabs of being terrorists and bombmakers.

The worst part of the allegations against the corporation is that managers and executives didn't seem to care about the prejudiced comments. CLU chief counsel Mark Rosenbaum elaborated:

“When she reported these attacks to her Disney managers, she was told that she had to put up with them, told that Disney knew there was a problem, but that the solution was the directive from her bosses that she needed to stop complaining."

Woah! So not cool!

Obvi, we don't have both sides of the story yet so we can't really judge either party. For Disney's part, a spokeswoman has said:

"Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has a long history of accommodating a variety of religious requests from cast members of all faiths. However, because we have not seen the lawsuit, we cannot comment specifically about this situation at this time."

The odds in this case may be on the plaintiff's side because an employee at Florida's Disney World resort sued for the same reason in 2004 and eventually settled out of court. Still, it is just her word against her teams … and is it bad of us to just want to believe that this kind of bigotry can't really exist, especially at the happiest place on Earth?

Ii have to agree with Disneyland. You wear what the hell they want you too or get another job. To hell with this Muslim crap anyway. I'm sick of it.

Tired of this Muslim crap. Disneyland is 100% right. Take that shit off your stinky head if you want to work here. Fuck Muslims.

Re: Buford t justiceRe: OJsakila – You two are incredibly disgusting people, you probably lack in other ways than that poor girl and for some reason think you're superior. It's a woman with religious rights. Check your constitution before you start insulting people for their religion

  4. Gonzo says – reply to this

Disney is right. Employees have to follow a dress code and if you don't like it then you shouldn't be working there.

  5. 5

The Muslims arent as welcoming to westerners as westerners have been to Muslims. They dont respect our way of life or our religion, my question is, why do you move to a country and live among a race you hate so much? This type of nonsense wouldnt happen if the entire western world shipped them back to wherever they are from after 9/11.

  6. Gonzo says – reply to this

However, she should have not been harassed by her co-workers if her claims are true.

  7. 7

Re: asuri – you need to wake up and learn a little more about them before defending them. You dont hear of Christians blowing up Mosques, or blowing up buildings killing over 2000 Muslims. They hate the western world, its religion and everything we stand for, they use that very constitution to hide behind while plotting their attacks. They dont respect your religion or keen fashion sense when you visit their country and they certainly dont allow you to practise any other religion in their country. Its a slap in the face to every family member of the victims of 9/11 and all the other attacks to defend their "rights"

Re: Rosette Nebula – You do realize Islam is a religion right? So this could be an American white girl who converted? Or even better…maybe she was born in the US as a muslim…makes it her country doesn't it? nice generalization there

  9. NOHATE says – reply to this

You guys are absolute effing idiots and are the prime example of why the rest of the world thinks we're racist uneducated people. At the end of the day, the woman was insulted and disrespected, what does it matter if she was muslim or jewish or whatever. She had a right to be treated as a normal human being.
Also, her wearing the scarf is absolutely none of our or their concern. It has to do with her faith, and to tell you the truth, she's only covering her hair. I mean Disney made such a big deal out of this because she is covering her hair I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
I thought we were supposed to treat each other the way we want to be treated. What happened to love thy neighbour as thyself ?

  10. assuri says – reply to this

Re: Rosette Nebula – I do know, Muslims, and Christians conduct terror attacks too. Only last week, both a mosque and a Sikh temple were attacked by "Christians". I've also been to Arabic countries where western culture was very much welcomed. What you don't understand is that you can't generalize like you do without sounding like an idiot. You can't cause a innocent working girl pain, because people who share her religion were behind 9/11. It's also against any basic human rights. As a woman, NO person can tell me what religion to have or what to wear. No matter religion and ethnicity, this is about human rights

  11. 11

Disneyland has a very, very strict dress code. No long nails, unnatural hair color, tattoos, long facial hair, sideburns, dirty nails, long hair on men or lotts of make-up. And if you dress against the dress code you either work in the back away from the public or go home. And if you think about it that means that there are other types of people who wouldn't be able to work in the front. Like Native American men who don't cut their hair or Hasidic Jews. Disney doesn't outright deny them jobs, they just put them behind the scenes. I don't fully agree with it, but they have a dress code and they are their own company. Also, I saw another article on this that said she didn't always wear her headscarf. Just recently, so maybe she is just looking for a way to sue. The employees who harrassed her should be in trouble though.

  12. 12

Re: curious – considering the percentage of white american females converting to islam I think its safe to say thats not the case, yes she could have been born in the U.S, again, thats where the part of the constitution protecting their "rights" in a country, among a nation they despise. Its not generalising- go read the Koran, their religion teaches them indifference towards any other religion.

  13. partyupinhere says – reply to this

Re: Rosette Nebula – you know nothing about the Koran, stop acting like you do.

  14. 14

Re: assuri – First of all, not anywhere in my comment did I condone any violent act towards any human being, so assuming that I do, make you an idiot. Secondly, as mentioned before, its not generalising, they do actually indoctrine an intolerance for all other beliefs thus I am not indefferant to her feelings for being harassed but rather her arrogance to want to make a scene about her being disrespected as a Muslim when they do not respect any other belief. As for your newsflash… BS, if you knew anything about what true Christianity teaches, you'd know Christians wouldnt do that. If there is such a story.

Re: Rosette Nebula – No, you're right, you just said all Muslims are terrorists. The same way you're arguing that Christianity isn't about hatred, the musim can argue they're about peace, cause essentially they are. It is generalizing if you think ALL Muslims hate Christians. You just don't get it, and I feel sorry for you and any muslim you may ever encounter when you get our of your little bubble

Re: Rosette Nebula – How is this relevant to a womans right to wear a headscarf? Here are a couple for you as well:
Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)
Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and posses the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants. (Isaiah 14:21 NAB)

Nice talking to you, now run a long to your KKK meeting

  21. 21

Re: asuri – Where did I say that? I said they teach intolerence towards other beliefs. Yes the girl shouldnt have been harassed, the people who did that are no better for doing that, but its my opinion, and I'm entitled to it, that if they dont like how we do things why do they choose to live among us. I'm talking about the dresscode situation, not her being abused. Assuming and implying I would do something moraly questionable because I dont agree with her case and dont feel any sympathy regarding her clothing dilemma is pathetic for the lack of a better word.

  22. Tolerance says – reply to this

Re: curious – Wow, I am baffled. I'm a muslim American female who has been born and raised in the U.S. I most definitely do not hate myself or the country that I call my own. I wear red, white, and blue on the fourth of July, cheered for the US at the Olympics, and have always lived a life so peacefully and without hatred that most of my friends do not know I am muslim (unless they ask). I was prom queen of my high school, and student government President of my college (an ivy league university) and BAFFLED by the level of ignorance here. Is this really how small minded are? This amazing country was founded on the principles of freedom. I would think people would learn tolerance. Um..In the last WEEK alone, a mosque in Missouri has been burned down to the ground, a bottle of acid thrown at a children's Muslim school in Chicago, a shooting at another mosque in Morton Grove (near Chicago). This is just domestically, not counting the death toll or number of burned mosques/qurans around in areas that the US has declared war in. And how are you forgetting about other incidences not involving Muslims? The shooting at a Sikh temple, the shooting in Colorado, the shooting yesterday in Texas? Violence occurs everywhere, and by people of all faiths. I have and will always love America and consider it to be my home (while also being proud to be Muslim).

  23. curious says – reply to this

Re: Tolerance – Is this aimed at me? Cause I was the first to speak out on the intolerance of these comments…and was defending the Muslims right.

  24. 24

Re: Tolerance – 5.51] O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.
Curious actually did defend Muslims, so I'm assuming Freudian slip?

  25. 25

Being religious/gay/or any other minority does not give you the right to violate dress code while working for that establishment. Nope, Sorry. It doesn't. It just sucks they have a religion that requires them to wear something. But as said, dress codes are dress codes. If you cannot accept that places of employment require dress codes that overrides your freedom of religion to a very small extent. Then simply find a place of employment that does. I mean, why the hell do these people willingly and knowingly attempt to wear that thing when its made clear they have dress codes. They didn't fire her because of her religion. They fired her for not following dress codes THAT SHE KNEW ABOUT. We do not excuse Christian nut jobs for committing a crime because the bible says thats fine, so this shouldn't be excused either.

This isn't even the whole story, the main point that has been left out is that this woman worked for Disney without wearing her Hijab for two and a half years. She then came into work one day wearing it after that time once she had read about it in her Citizen test.
Why suddenly be so intent upon wearing it and refuse other offers to work in another part of the park?

  27. 27

It should work both ways. As a woman should I visit her country I cannot dress as I choose and have to cover up. The lady should work elsewhere perhaps where she does not have to adhere to a dress code. It's just Disney's rule for all employees. The lack of respect for her otherwise though is appalling.

Re: Rosette Nebula – "why do you move to a country and live among a race you hate so much? " How do you knwo that this woman HATES his country? God, people like you make me sick. Seriously. This is a land were people are FREE and also free to chose their religion!!!!! So dont talk BS like that!! I am srue you are one screaming 1st amendment at every given chance! This has nothing to do with this woman hating this country. Why are dumb people like you always up to tell others that other religions are bad or wrong??? Just because a handful of muslims are fanatics? That would be the same me saying EVERY WHITE PERSON is a white spremecist jsut because a handful of white trash idiots are. Stop being so arrogant - there are millions of people in this world with different believes. Why is yours better than others? The problem here is that this woman wears something that people ignorantly think is a sign of being a fkn terrorist.

Re: Melissa – Excuse me…arabs and muslim are being killed everywhere. For someone who's lived in France and currently living in London I laugh at your bullshit. There is no religious intolerance in this country…mosques and churches stand beside each other you can try o convince other people of your lies…but don't try it with someone who actually lives here.

  38. 38

Disney has strict dress codes. People are made aware of these dress codes when hired. If she wasn't in agreement to Disney's rules then she should have went to work for Knotts Berry farm instead. I don't feel sorry for her at all and I feel like she's just greedy using her religion as a way to make a quick buck.

  39. 39

    Re: Judyg73Re: Judyg73
One of Islam's most revered modern scholars, Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, openly sanctions offensive Jihad: "In the Jihad which you are seeking, you look for the enemy and invade him. This type of Jihad takes place only when the Islamic state is invading other [countries] in order to spread the word of Islam and to remove obstacles standing in its way."  Elsewhere, he notes: "Islam has the right to take the initiative…this is God’s religion and it is for the whole world. It has the right to destroy all obstacles in the form of institutions and traditions … it attacks institutions and traditions to release human beings from their poisonous influences, which distort human nature and curtail human freedom. Those who say that Islamic Jihad was merely for the defense of the 'homeland of Islam' diminish the greatness of the Islamic way of life."

Like I said, i dont condone any violence toward anybody, be it physical or mental. But the girl has no case for refusing to stick to the dresscode. As for the Bible, clearly you are not familiar with Scripture or the teachings of Christ.

  40. 40

How long have you been in the U.K, a month? You are the one talking absolute rubbish saying there arent any issues… Good Grief
    Re: assuri

  41. 41

When you agree to work to Disney you agree (and are full aware) of their strict dress codes.

  42. 42

"some went so far as to call her a terrorist, a camel and a bitch all while they carelessly accused Arabs of being terrorists and bombmakers." This part is awful if it's true. I find it hard to believe they told her to 'put up with it' though. It's too much a hot button issue for a company whose image is #1 to ignore like that, and risk this bad press.

  43. 43

Re: Rosette Nebula – You're ignorant. Do you have any idea how much blood Christians have spilled in the name of their religion? Terrorists are a group of extremists, and only incredibly stupid people like yourself would consider their views a representation of ALL of Middle East.

Re: NookiesWA – let me just tell you this (in case you haven't read the above article) Disney did NOT forbid the girl from wearing hejab (scarf) she was harassed from the STAFF not Disney. so dress code has nothing to do with this case, but attitude is to blame. acceptance and support are whats missing.

  45. jk says – reply to this

The lasgt time I was there ,the employees were wearing uniforms that we given to them byh Disney. If her head scarf was not part of her uniform then why was she wearing it? I am starting to believe that they deliberately get these jobs and then wear the religous garb to try to get the government to make laws that let them run peoples busineses the way THEY want them . Taking over the USA is one of Obamas wishes and the Muslims and if we keep giving in to their evry demand they will soon be running the USA. Sooner or later we have to stand up for our rights and not theirs . If you dont like it here go

  46. fatima b says – reply to this

I believe NO ONE should expect anyone to change their religion just to be accepted by them. it's SOOOO selfish :(
We have to know that there are a lot of different types of ppl and we need to respect them for who they are and their beliefs.

It's hard to change our mind and think this way because we are hearing the opposite from the media every single day! but what's the use of going with a crowd? even a dead fish goes with the flow of water .. it's important to go to the right direction and be nice to everyone. God loves all his creations.

  47. 47

    Team Disneyland!

  48. 48

If she was harassed then that's just wrong on every level but why do you assume she's the one telling the truth?
I've worked with people who screw off on the job all the time and then want to cry discrimination when they get called on the carpet for it.
Lets wait to hear both sides before we pass judgement on either side.
As to her headscarf, she still has to follow the dress code that the company sets and its something that should have been discussed when she was hired. If its just coming up now then what changeds? Chances are it wasn't Disney's dress code policy.

  49. 49

Why don't they just put her in the "It's A Small World" ride? Problem solved.

If a bunch of people blew something up, IT;S THEIR FAULT, don;t blame religion, If a Christian killed a bunch of people, should we say it's the bible's fault? If a priest raped a kid, It;s the bible's fault? Re: Michelle – "The massive conglomerate has been sued by the American Civil Liberties Union because the company allegedly fired a Muslim employee at Disneyland in 2010 because she wore her hijab headscarf at work."

I think you need to scroll up and reread this article and do a related search on Google. Disneyland is being sued because they fired her for wearing a hijab, not because of the way the company handled (or in this case did not handle) hostility in the workplace.

  58. 58

But I see where Perez' journalism fails because he doesn't correctly state that Disney is being sued for both discrimination and harassment. He only mentions discrimination whereas other news outlets mention harassment as well.

Look as an ex Disney employee it was not fair what her managers did, almost all managers and leads are corrupt and its sad that this poor woman had to go through that crap while trying to be a good cast member, people don't understand the huge pressure we're under constantly and to not even be able to express your heritage and get crap from your fellow cast members just makes the job a million times harder, her leads and managers should've been more supportive and ACTUALLY done their job. You cant expect much from Disney though. I support this woman because to have the guts to go up against a corporation as big as Disney shows that she wont be easily put down. Cast members leads and managers could've prevented this easily..I don't understand why people would let this happen.

Substitute "Jew", "Christian", "Buddhist" or any other faith, and people would be up in arms. I'm a Christian and American, but was born and raised in a Muslim nation, and it sickens me to see idiots who have never opened up a Quran or talked to a Muslim claim to know what they believe. Several Muslims were victims of 9/11 - Americans, just like the rest, just doing their jobs in the towers or on their way to another city via plane. To suggest that Al Qaeda psychos represent Muslims as a whole is like saying David Koresh represents Christians. It's insane. Non-Muslim Americans commit terrorist acts with alarming frequency - the Columbine boys, the OKC bomber, the Unabomber, the wackjob in Aurora, the white supremacist at the Sikh temple - but I don't see everyone hating on white men. This is a democracy, and this woman has a right to work in a non-abusive environment. Discrimination is NEVER acceptable.

Causes alot of tension as l am not being nasty but they are not all honest when applying for the job. Okay fine, maybe she shouldn't have wear that her hijab headscarf at work, knowing how strict her job is. But still, it doesn't give people the right to immediately judge her and make fun of her like that. She doesn't deserve it.

And it's sad to see the comments in this post saying all these bullshits about us Muslims. Our religion taught us to RESPECT other religions too, it's not out fault that some Muslims decided to do all those things in 9/11. Yes, they blew up WTC, hijacked a plane and killed many people. It's a very wrong thing to do and our religion definitely didn't teach us to do that, they even FORBID it.

But that doesn't give you the right to quickly judge us as terrorist and basically say all we do is kill innocent people and fight people who were non-Muslims. Because no, that's not what we do. Those who did that are just Muslims who were fucked up in the head, no offense to anyone.

    That's all I wanna say.

  71. sickofracism says – reply to this

these comments are absolutely ridiculous. no matter how strict Disney's dress code is, she STILL has a right to wear a headscarf…just like a Jewish man would still be allowed to wear his yarmulke. oh, and the notion that any religious minority who needs to adhere to such dress codes should be "kept out of the eye of the public" perpetuates the idea that Disney wishes to front the cookie-cutter White American image and hide the very real diversity that this nation is made up of. "Separate but equal" sound familiar to anyone? such an idea is just as bad as what was going on in the Jim Crow days of the racist south.

MOST Immigrant don't understand the word FREEDOM in US and think that it is FREE to do anything they like. US born peoples know this FREEDOM. If someone in US said that all US need FREE and not FREEDOM, he/she not from US. Maybe an immigrant. this is the different between OCCUPY movement and real US Citizen. Like Abrahan Lincoln said :

"At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? No! All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with the treasures of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not, by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point, then, is this approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It can not come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time or die by suicide."
    - Abraham Lincoln

If that girl don't want to follow Disney rules, she can work on other place.
If Islam immigrant don't want to receive and follow constitutions and FREEDOM, please go back and practicing your sharia on your previous country. I think Arabs will probably receive you.

You've left out the fact that Disney offered her a number of different job positions that would have alleviated her issues and she turned all of them down.

@asuri. Sorry but they are right. People as Christians have had their rights torn apart and taken away for the longest time because it offends someone. From In God We Trust to One nation Under God. And this country was founded on those principles. But when it comes to any other religion we have to respect them. So don't use the Constitutional Right line. That right went out the window a long time ago. A employer has a Right to apply a dress code. If you do not like the dress code then you have a Right to find a different job. The Constitution does not say that your religious right has to be honored by Private Industries. It says you have Freedom of Religion and that the Government can't impede that right. So my last suggestion about the Constitution is read it and understand what it says before you use it as a defense just because your heard someone else make that statement. The problem with 90% of the people crying Constitutional Rights is that you have no idea just what rights you have with the Constitution.
