Lemony Snicket Responds To Lauren Conrad's Destruction Of His Beautiful Books!

| Filed under: Celebrity FeudsLauren ConradBookz

Remember this video (above)?

It was the belle of the internet ball yesterday, so we hope so! Ha!

Lauren Conrad got sooo much flack over it. Cuz basically, it's a DIY how-to for a cute storage box that you can place on a shelf. But it involves the destruction of hardback books…

And even though she was celebrating the love of books (she even recommends using the pages for a different wall decor idea), her Crafty Creation pissed a lot of people off!

And then LEMONY FREAKING SNICKET responded — cuz they were HIS books she destroyed!! Replying to the literary hoopla, he said:

"It has always been my belief that people who spend too much time with my work end up as lost souls, drained of reason, who lead lives of raving emptiness and occasional lunatic violence. What a relief it is to see this documented."

Look, we totally understand the desire to preserve the world's books. With kindles and nooks taking over, we fear for the end of smelly pages and bent binds too. It's a nostalgia thing.

But it's not like she was burning them! Literature is art …and she just wanted to turn her purchased books into a different type of art.

Still. We wouldn't suggest trying this craft with brand new books. Donate 'em. But if you find some that are gonna be thrown away anyways (or have seen better days), we don't see the eternal damnation in wanting to immortalize them in a different way.

I think he described any reality star to a T. (disclaimer) I didn't watch the video, I don't dislike LC I just can't imagine being interested in anything she would do as she tries to become a Martha Stewart, type

ooohhh, I remember those books, loved them when I was a kid.

As a writer and artist myself, I have to say I cringed at Conrad's "craft" project. Seems to me she's not mindful about her actions. She destroyed a series of brand new books to make storage? Then asks the viewer what books they like and read? I don't think anyone that loves books would bother to reply to her video considering how anti-thesis it is to literary advocacy. Uh! Books are to be read, loved, shared, recycled…! If her intent was to destroy books, would have been better for her to simply burn texts about hate as a political statement! Now, that's video worthy :D

I'm still shocked that she hacked apart books that could have been donated to a school, a shelter, a hospital, Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc. That was just so incredibly out-of-touch and stupid.

    What a stupid idea.

Today's arts and crafts project: making toilet paper out of an old book. All you need is Lauren Conrad's L.A. Candy trilogy or her stupid style book and some scissors OR bonus the books can be used as firewood too! Either way it's hurtful to see your books destroyed.

You do realize what he wrote is a joke right? Lemony Snicket's books were written in a really dreary tone where there are no happy endings and what he said is just keeping the persona going.

Sheesh. If you go on Pinterest you'll see things like this happen on craft sites all the time. The only reason people are going on about it is because it is a reality star instead of a stay-at-home-mom showing what she did with a book series her child has outgrown. I loved these books, but I also know they frequently come through the library book sale where I am a librarian at 50 cents a pop.

As for this being the antithesis (one word–no hyphen, Ms. Authorface) of promoting literacy, give me a break. She IS recycling them, she even mentioned using the pages and not throwing them away. Also, the same thing can be seen on etsy for $100:

That actually made me feel sick. Perfectly good books ruined for no reason at all. Why do you need you storage box to look like books? I wish she had used books that were already falling apart for this DIY project. Using old books with the pages falling out already would have been a lot easier to watch then destroying beautiful, never been read books.

It is a stupid idea, but I don't get why people got so mad. A lot of books are purchased as e-books nowadays, so at least she bought books. You could probably pain the box to look like book ends instead of destroying good books. It wasn't a big enough deal for her to have to take it down. She has written some books, I don't know if they are any good, so you know she does at least enjoy books. I've seen much more idiot DIY projects. She didn't need to be dissed so much. I do agree with people saying that the books could've been donated to schools. Overall, dumb idea, but she didn't need to be attack over it.

I was cringing throughout this entire video. I can't even imagine what it must of been like for Snicket to have to watch a video on someone completely ruining/defacing his work…it was completely inconsiderate of her. Snicket should make a video on himself showing you how to make a campfire with The Hills seasons DVDs.

What a stupid bitch. I mean really, she's using literature for her own selfish aesthetics and in the process ruining brand new books. She didn't have the decency to even search for thrifted books? And her office sounds like a graveyard for humanity.

Yeah, this made me cringe too. I cannot believe she destroyed such beautiful books! I rarely borrowed books, once I read them I felt they were mine. I liked to read beautiful books and I own a ton of them. Actually… several tons. I love my books. Watching these books get hacked up is sooo unpleasant. I am sure she didn't mean to make us all cringe, but its surprising that she didn't realize that would happen. I don't know how she took the exacto knife so calmly to the book. I doubt I could do it!

    LOL, durrrrrr!!
She should use the Bible….who the eff reads those anyway?

  16. 16

    *who the eff reads THAT….Durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  17. 17

I don't see what the big deal is! I see books for sale at the local used book store on sale(lemony snickett included) for less than a buck. Whatever's not sold, is just going to wind up in a landfill anyways. I think it's a cute craft, especially for a children's favorite book series. It'll make great memories, since by the time they grow up, there will probably be no more books, most of them will probably be electronic. I've seen stuff like this on pinterest all the time. Wallpapering with the pages, making roses out of pages of your favorite books, etc… People need to lighten up! She's not burning books, it's a great way to re-purpose and recycle.

its a fucking craft. people need to get over themselves and stop making a big deal over something as stupid as a craft done by lauren conrad. what has the world come to.

    video was taken off youtube.

WOW at the comments. This project is obviously not for someone who isn't creative. The first thing I saw was two projects. The one Lauren did and mine which is combining all the books Grimm Brothers style ( they have a book with several stories). She's not throwing the book away. Do we even know if these are her personal books? It could be her childhood books or the company she's making these videos with could have given them to her. Maybe they should have given her fake books as to not offend/anger anyone. I say, if you're just an L.C fan and are about to destroy a perfectly good book, don't do this. If you're into crafts anyway and decided to put the front and back, back on and maybe design a piece with your name or a pic. where the missing cover is then this is the project for you.

I really don't think he was criticizing her. I read every Lemony Snicket book when I was younger and they all begin with a disclaimer telling the reader not to read them because they are depressing and will ruin your life…ect.

  22. adris says – reply to this

I bet money she's never read any of those books she destroyed. I don't understand why you are being chummy and defending her. She's obviously desperately trying to make a buck out of everything and anything possible. I refuse to watch the video because I find it ridiculous as I find ridiculous that you'd think this is possibly a good idea for her to destroy books for nothing important instead of promoting reading. Use that start status for something selfless for once, LC!!!

  23. 23

Admire folks who can do crafty stuff as i am not talented that way.

But they build bookcases for a reason, I got a two shelf one at Ikea for less than $20.

    That's just Handler's sense of humor….

  25. Lucie Béluga says – reply to this

If he minds, next time she can use mine! I think as books as objects, beautiful objects but objects nonetheless. Most people would just throw some books they are done with! Recycling is a great idea, and it somewhat promotes reading anyhow!
