Watch Pussy Riot's Punk Prayer That Got Them Two Years In Prison

| Filed under: Music MinuteLegal MattersPolitik

Russian punk band Pussy Riot has just been given a 2-year prison sentence after already serving six months behind bars for protesting Vladimir Putin's oppressive policies at the alter of Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral.

Check out the video (above) to see Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich perform their hooliganism song Punk Prayer and let us know if their "crime" is worthy of the punishment they received.

We respect these women so much for standing up for freedom of expression and how they CONTINUE to dissent a government they believe to be corrupt. In her closing statements to the court on August 8, Alyokhina stated:

"I am extremely angered by the phrase ‘so-called' which the State Prosecutor uses to refer to contemporary art. I would like to draw attention to the fact that during the trial of Brodsky exactly the same phrase was used. His poems were referred to as ‘so-called poetry', and the witnesses hadn't even read them. Just as a number of our witnesses had not actually seen what had happened … And if that's how it is, then for me at least this trial is just a ‘so-called' trial. I am not afraid of you. I am not afraid of you and I am not afraid of the thinly veneered deceit of your verdict at this ‘so-called' trial. My truth lives with me. I believe that honesty, free-speaking and the thirst for truth will make us all a little freer. We will see this come to pass."

Read the girls' inspiring closing statements in their entirety right here. Sources say that they walked out of the court room to a standing ovation after delivering one final verbal blow to the establishment they were protesting during the church performance for which they've been found guilty.

So proud! These courageous gals and the children two of them have been separated from are in our thoughts and prayers!

You "respect" anyone who pulls attention-seeking, stupid stunts in the name of a cause (even a stupid cause). Why? Because you're a flaming homo who thinks that any attention is good attention. What those ugly skanks did was disrespectful to those who were attending the service. Stunts don't make change happen. But homos like you don't understand that. The women broke Russian laws. So the women deserve what they got. And while it's nice of you to mention the children involved, the fact is that if the mothers of the children didn't think the kids were important enough to put first, then maybe the children are better off. Their first responsibility is to the kids they've created, not some ridiculous stunt that, in the end, will change NOTHING. Their stupid twats, and you're a stupid twat for applauding them.

Yup, it's called willfully breaking the law, and they got what was coming to them. Your "do whatever you want and fuck society if they don't agree with you" is a dangerous mantra. Grow the fuck up and act like an adult. There are always reprocussions for ones actions.

    Disgusting!
    Desecration is ok?
Stand up for your political beliefs etc sure…keep it out of the church. So If i barged into a synagog during service (or anytime for that matter) with my metal band and started preaching my beliefs that Obama was a Muslim radical trying to ruin the country that would be ok?

First of all, I don't listen to anyone's opinion on a topic or situation if they don't even know the difference between "their" and "they're". This is in reference to "Yes You Bore Me"'s comment on the video above.

Secondly, after watching the video above, I am confused at how anyone could consider that music. I love music. I love discovering new sounds and genres, but dancing around in tights and balaclavas is just silly to me. And maybe it's because I can't speak Russian, but they're "screaming" sounds like nonsense. I don't think it would even matter to me, if I understood them - they're whole concept is strange.

Lastly, how can these girls (and guys, if there are any) expect respect from others when they, themselves, blatantly disrespect someone by going into their place of worship and disgracing their God? It's (again) confusing to me how anyone would take them seriously - because I sure don't. I can disagree with their believes without ridiculing those beliefs and therefore causing offense to the other person.

This is why the world is in this predicament in the first place People have no respect for one another and their religious beliefs. It's their way or the highway - and it's just not right.

He crossed out hooliganism - just saying.

You all are so happy to bash Perez! I guess that you all need to call up Rosa Parks' family and say she was a f*cking idiot for breaking the law!

Yes, these girls broke the law but who else is going to stand up? It is bad in Russia - they are trying to stand up for freedom. If people do not do that, it will not change.

It annoys me SO MUCH that these girls got so much attention over something that is so tasteless, disturbing and infant. How can people call this MUSIC?? how can people call this ART??!!! OK, they wanted to show that they want a change, that they want to live in a democratic country, however is that the civilized way to show that they are ready for the freedom of the word? by yelling out curse words/religious language and political opinion all in one sentence in a Church while performing these epileptic-like dance moves or having an orgy in the museum during work hours( another their "performance")? That doesn't say democracy to me, that says anarchy or smth. Yet i would prefer them to be free by now just so that they don't get any more attention and support from the world.

I can understand though why people from America or Europe support this. Living in a democratic country, you may think that this is truly wrong to put people in jail for expressing their opinion ( if you put this situation simply in one sentence, but actually it's way beyond it…OR celebrities do it just for their own PR), however i should remind you that it's RUSSIA we are talking about…a country that has changes so many times in the last 50 or 100 years that for now may be just leave your opinion to yourself and let our existing government figure out how to stabilize more important questions than democracy. It's the existing government that got us through from Putsch to the country ( not the worst one at all ) we have now…. it is SAD that there is this FASHION now to be against Putin even though many people are just driven by their emotions, crowd and an example from the west….Russia and America are two fundamentally different countries- think about that before talking about democracy!

2 years in a labourcamp. is different than sitting in prison. ( of course not a holiday either.)

This sentence is minus the time they already were waiting for judgment.

These lady are nuts, they ridicule other peoples faith under the slogan" FREEDOM OF SPEECH" its like a sort of bullying…..

These woman were standing up for freedom! My guess is that all of you who were callling these girls stupid and getting what they deserve for breaking the law are a bunch of artificial people. These woman are trying to improve the quality of life of millions of people in Russia by standing up against their goverment that is trying to surpress their own citizens. You are all so quick to call them bad mothers…did you ever stop to think that maybe they are doing this for their children? To make the future of their children better? So that they can have freedom? Their goal is to get a discussion going about the issues in Russia and to make a change. So they chose a orthodox cathedral that is being managed by the government. Did you think that protesting in a restaurant somewhere is going to help their cause? no ofcourse not. So yes they broke the law but does it really deserve a 2 year prison sentence? In holland where i live, if someone would do that, they may get a fine. It is so nice to live in a free country and i hope that these 3 courageous woman one day will get to experience the same thing and live in in a free Russia. Maybe instead of reading perez hilton all day and leaving ignorant comments, it is time that you educate yourself a little bit about the living situations in other countries.

  15. 15

If they wanted to have a protest about the government, then they should have spouted off in front of parliament not at the front of a Church. I'm not religious and any way, shape or form, but this is so distasteful, disrespectful and rude. I don't come to your birthday and pee on your cake, do I?

Do I agree with their jail sentence? Not at all. I believe they should have to spend the next two years doing community service with the Church as an apology to those they interrupted that day.

  16. 16

Anything's better than another year of Taylor or Katy.

  17. 17

Re: Helen – um yeah Helen. And I'm sure you would commend them crashing your father's funeral or breaking into movie theaters with hoods on to make a statement too. Sorry but your logic FAILS.

i guess totally idiotic, incorrect comments are what i would find on a gossip website - you people need to get off of the website and do some RESEARCH as to what ACTUALLY happened. they weren't just dancing around someone's church to have FUN. go spend some time in a country that tramples your rights, an essential police state, then come back and talk shit about these girls on a gossip website. these girls are in their young 20s and and martyrs for freedom, not just a bunch of people trying to have fun. if you had half the brains they do, you'd get that. but you are on a gossip website.

  19. 19

Re: krissie – They're not Martyrs they're idiots. There are better ways to get their point across. No sympathy for them. Their age shows. Definitely. Young people tend to.do compulsive, stupid things without realizing there are consequences. There are better ways they could have raised awareness.

Re: Peggy – I agree. If you want to show dissent, do it in a public square. I am saddened that they chose that venue and discredited their cause by doing so. I wish main stream media would've included that to a better degree in their depiction of the account. I don't know if I would've given them 2 years, but yes, they definitely deserved to be punished for the way they protested.

Re: krissie – Gee Krissie - aren't you on a gossip website too?? Wow talking about the pot calling the kettle black. Needless to say, I don't care what you are protesting about. What they did was disrespectful and they should be held accountable. A church is a sacred place for many people and when they shit on Putin, they also shit on the people in the church. They want to protest? Stand in front of Parliament and protest. I would be opposed in THAT case to them being arrested. What they did in the Church - no. Too bad - deal with the consequences.

  22. 22

You idiots who are all giving these girls shit for doing this know that in Russia, the church and government hold each other's hands while walking through corruption together, right? Most of those priest drive mercedes!!! The government and church are together in a bath of filth. That's why it was done in the church, they were mocking this "religious institution" because it worships money and power instead now… all at the expense of the poor Russian civilians.

A man in Russia who raped a 16 year old girl only got 1 year in prison because of who he knows. A priest hit someone in his car and he doesn't get anything. AND THESE GIRLS GET 2 YEARS??!!!

I fully agree with their right to speech, their right to stand up against Putin. BUT why in the blue hell is it ok that they go into a place of worship and desecrate it. There is a time and place for everything and it was completely inappropriate to break into a church and pull this, BTW that would be illegal here in the US as well. Of course Madonna supports them, she thinks its cool to attack places of worship too.

  25. 25

PUTIN IS A SICKO so scared of losing his immense power wont even let a couple gurls speak out BUT puts them in jail away from their kids . let these gurls go they only saying WHAT EV ERYONE ELSE IS THINKING U RUSSIAN BASTARD..

You want a comment? What these women did is not art but blasephemy. It is not political speech but blasphemy. I agree with their disdain at Putin but by doing this in a church, they crossed the line and should suffer the full brunt of the sentence

  29. 29

I know Moscow very well. The Christ the Savior Cathedral is breath taking beautiful. It is a place for people to come to pray and get some peace of mind. Not for some crazy young girls to be loud and sing their radical song to become famous.
