Madonna SUED For Supporting Homosexuality In Russia!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayMadonnaMusic MinuteLegal MattersPolitikLGBT

Although we had hoped for the best, we had a feeling that something completely shameful like this would happen!

Madonna fearlessly voiced her support for gay rights during her MDNA concert in St. Petersburg (as seen above), Russia, where sadly, laws prohibit homosexuality being promoted to minors, and now, the iconic pop star has been sued by nine activists for almost $10.5 MILLION!

According to Alexander Pochuyev, the lawyer representing them:

"No one is burning anyone at the stake or carrying out an Inquisition. Modern civilization requires tolerance and respect for different values."

Okay, WHAT?

Is he listening to the words coming out of his own mouth?

We must have a completely different interpretation of what it means to be modern, tolerant, or respectful here, because none of those words are usually used to describe stripping people of their rights and liberties over something like sexual preference.

But then again, this is also from the country that put a band in jail for publicly speaking out against a political figure, so we guess we can't expect much else!

Such an unbelievably sad shame.

But we doubt this will even remotely deter Her Madgesty from continuing to fight for equality and freedom of EXPRESSION!

Keep it up, gurl!

    That country is so backwards

  2. 2

Great! Hope they win! That will teach ignorant entertainers to read a book next time, and try to understand the culture they are in, instead of applying US culture to countries around the world!

  3. 3

I understand the outrage, however you have to look at the situation through eyes other than your own, free & westernized viewpoint. For a foreigner to go to another country, break their laws and not expect repercussions is unrealistic. If an American woman goes to Iran, they have to wear a headscarf in public because that's their law. To break it brings consequence. This isn't limited to other countries … look at the outrage Americans exhibit towards Muslims who come to the US and want sharia laws applied or when a new mosque was going to built near the 9/11 memorial site. Americans don't like it when outsiders come to their country and challenge their values, morals or their laws either. This situation is very similar.

    You're so ignorant

  5. 5

Sorry but Madonna should have not gone there if she didnt believe in their laws……oh wait, of course she went, she did this to make headlines and earn a big fat paycheck. Seriously Perez? Shes not fighting any war for acceptance of homosexuality, she did it for herself, no one else. We expect tourists to obey our laws when they come here, so you better obey the country your in, laws PERIOD!!!!!

Exactly tolerance for ALL beliefs, why is that gays always assume only their beliefs should be tolerated? Madonna new it was against the law in russia to promote homsexuality to minors and she knew there would be minors in the crowd.Wheres madonnas respect to russian law? Hope they get every penny!

    Well said.

Even if Madonna loses and she has to pay 10.5 Million…thats nothing for her. She is worth 650 Million. It's the equivalent of most of us working class losing $100 from our total monthly income before tax. Thing is, Madonna will do it again the next time she's in Russia and if she's sued again she'll pay another $10 million, no problem for her. With someone as wealthy as she is, the only way you can "punish" her is through jail time which of course this is not going to happen to her since she can usually easily pay her way out of any jail time. I think it's great Madonna is promoting tolerance in Russia and not afraid of lawsuits.

    Re: Meggie246524
    I couldn't agree more.

While I do believe the amount to be excessive, laws should be obeyed in the country you're in or elce expect to pay the consequences. I don't think the Russian laws are right however, the laws are the laws. If the Russian people want change, then I wish them the best. Russia is not America.

  12. 12

Re: kappuhcheenoh – Promoting tolerance is just a U.S. culture? Last time I checked, there is still tons of intolerance in the U.S. so I think your theory is flawed. Tolerance is a universal concept not a country specific one.

  13. 13

she's not fighting for shit, just being "oh so controversial" silly bitch.

OH!! also dumbass pervez, i wish you would get yout agenda straight. You have shouted to the hills that homosexuality is something you're born to, NOT a choice. but the you cut your own throat by saying "something like sexual preference." Preference connotes CHOICE. so, make up your fucking mind.

  14. 14

That's their law whether she likes it or not. She is disrespectful and an embarrassment.

  15. 15

Actually after watching the video, the crowd was very supportive. Everything she said in her speech is true. I have to go with team Madonna on this one.

  16. JT says – reply to this

Wonderful how the commenters here are siding with a fascist country. Guess free speech only applies when it's something you agree with.

  17. 17

    Re: kappuhcheenoh
Culture sure does applies to there beliefs but they still took american dollars when they were going hungry back in the late eighties ! Culture and religious beliefs are not more powerful than human rights!

Re: raypearson – why are u here bitch…ur always talking shit about madonna and ur like 300 years old…why are u on this website?!!!!! go have a tea and a chat with ur nursing home budies and stop trying to sound like ur hip, u waste of flesh!!!!!

  19. 19

    Re: raypearson
They are a bunch of Idiots posting vile comments about her clearly she does not need the P.R. to stay relevant when she sold 300 millions albums and with this tour alone has grossed over $400 million.
When Is America gonna stop supporting countries that torture Gays?
If this was black people being torture or jailed or denied human rights we would have the likes of Dillon, Springsteen U2 doing concerts as they have for human rights in South Africa.
Madonna believes in equal rights for all but they are plenty of people enjoying the fact that they love to Bully for their selfish religious beliefs to show hate and dehumanizing treatment of Gays that has force gay youth on the verge of suicide?
When people start having family members that are gay starting to commit suicide for not being accepted as equal and seeing what damage this does to a human beings?
How can anyone say that GOD is love from this?

  20. MichJB says – reply to this

If she violated that country's laws then they have every right to arrest, sue or ban her. Not everyone believes in the same things as we do and well boys and girls - thats the way it is. Personally I hope they win - Madonna doesn't believe in anything she says - its all for show. If she does believe in it, then this is the time for her to put up or shut up.

  21. MichJB says – reply to this

Re: JT – Free speech is only guaranteed to Americans by our Bill of Rights. It doesn't apply to other countries. If you feel so strongly about it - get on a plane and go and protest for them to change their laws.

  22. 22

Re: dabomb – you. like so many others, are really lame in the insult department. Really, you should try for a little originality as you sit there hiding behind your fakes ass avatar and fake ass name. Saying i am old, and failing at "old" jokes is just silly. Of course I'm old, you see my pic as i am. actually i'm older that that now. Simple question asshat, so what? you have a point? I've never used the word "hip" in my life without a "py" added, and then yes i confess to that. Where were you in 1968? Not even born yet I'm guessing. I was in Chi for the convention. Look it up in wiki under ancieny history you might learn something.

  23. 23

Good for Russia! They should have sued her for alot more than 10.5 million though.

  24. JC says – reply to this

    Re: anewlow
So you admire someone who can easily pay off lawsuits and pretty much buy their way around the whole legal system? It's a shame the Russian group in jail whom Madonna claims to support do not have that same privilege.

  25. 25

    Re: Meggie246524 – Well said.

  26. 26

Well, Russia is so corrupted and backwards anyway. There's no freedom of speach in Russia !

  27. Josh says – reply to this

If everyone in the world submitted to laws that are pure discrimination like some of you say we would still have slaves in America, DO you see how stupid these comments are?? Some of you make me ashamed to be American and gay.

  28. Josh says – reply to this

Re: kappuhcheenoh – Better to read a book and let people be treated like dogs because they are gay? We still have slaves in the US if it were up to people like you.

  29. Josh says – reply to this

Re: MichJB – You don't know much about her do you? She always has put her fame and money where her mouth is.

  30. 30

Good for Russia. Promoting sexual perversions like homosexuality to children should be banned. We need legislation like this in America.

  31. 31

Re: Meggie246524 – Thank you I agree, she needs to respect their laws or face the consequences.

  32. annoyed says – reply to this

what how is that ignorant….the rules of the country say no homosexuality promoted to minors, this should be the law in every country. if madonna is so rude as to go to a different country and break the law then she should be sued. Also that "band" is disgusting and disrespectful they deserve to be in jail. Basically perez anything or anyone thats not completely pro gay and anti straight is wrong to you

  33. 33

    Perez, you knew nothing.

they maybe backwards but they are sending parts to iran ..

  36. João says – reply to this

    Shame on Russia

  37. 37

Re: raypearson – what's the matter Ray? Did I hurt your feelings? I'm glad I got your attention which was my intention….see!!! It doesn't feel good to be bullied now does it? I'm not an ageist but you on the other hand are, I've seen your comments here calling Madonna old and always trashing her…so I wanted to give you a small spoon of your own toxic medicine…Good day Sir.

  38. 38

Re: Susannah – I sure hope to be smart enough not to bully and sound like a hater…Thanks for the advise, Noted.

  40. 40

    Go Madonna - you're awesome!

  41. annabel says – reply to this

Madonna, a faded pop star, is trying anything to stay relevant and current that includes courting controversy wherever possible. She did not do this for LGBT community, I don't believe that for a second, she only proves that she is ignorant and self-serving and has no respect for local laws, thinking they are above it. She also stomped on an Orthodox cross here. Cultural insensitive? You bet. If And Elton John is right, she does look like a fairground stripper. Ughh…

  42. Annabel says – reply to this

Re: BAEEAB – and what country are you from? the one that detains prisoners in Guantanamo without charges? The one that launched an illegal war on Iraq? The one where Al Gore was elected president but Fox announced that Bush won the election? The difference between your country and Russia is, they know they are not free, you are deluded into thinking you are.

  43. 43

WOW. So it's justifiable that they sue her because she broke the law, it's just like saying the anti-gay law is acceptable. People are forced here to silence any reading, writing, speech or debate on anything "gay"

And this lacks information, because clearly their reason is so funny.

"Maybe someone does not see the link but after Madonna's concert maybe some boy becomes gay, some girl becomes lesbian, fewer children are born as a result and this big country cannot defend its borders - for me it causes moral suffering," Alexei Kolotkov, one of the people who filed the suit.

Seeing a Madonna concert can make you gay. SANTA MADONNA!

  44. 44

So she went into THEIR country which has its own laws. She broke those laws and now people are surprised that she's being sued. What incredible egotism to assume that the laws here should also apply in other civilized nations. How about teaching Madonna some manners about how to be a graceful guest in someone else's country?

  45. 45

Re: JT – Really dumbass? Free speech is an American ideal. She was in Russia. Their country, their laws.

  46. 46

Re: Annabel – Just curious but what do you consider a legal war?

  47. 47

What "freedom of speech"?? Those hags were shouting anti-Christian slogans IN A CHRISTIAN church DURING service!! There was not a single anti-Putin or anti-Government word spit out by those idiots. Orthodox churches in Russia hold special place in people psyche, even for atheists. Because they were blown up, they were desecrated by the communists, people were burned there alive by the Nazis during the war. You don't just go and shit on this. You simply DON'T.

You are grossly misinformed along with all those geriatric "celebrities" that are trying to cash in on this nonsense. Do your research before you take sides in this kind of situations.

This concerns everybody, not just Perez.

  48. Ads says – reply to this

What's wrong with all of you? I came to the comments section in hopes of reading comments about love, tolerance and acceptance and all I can see is intolerance.

So what if it's Russia's law? It's a law that sends out a message to millions of Russian gay and lesbian youths that they are second class citizens and not as worthy as their heterosexual peers.

If they had a law that made it legal to rape young girls and Madonna went there and made a speech about how wrong it is to rape, would you have said "Oh well, it's the law, Madonna should have known better"? No. Definitely not.

Good on her for showing the GLBT in Russia that there are people in the world who actually care.
