Woman Who Never Finished Reading 50 Shades Of Grey Thinks We Should Burn It!

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueBookz50 Shades Of Grey

50 shades of grey book burning uk claire phillipson bdsm domestic violence el james

You know the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover?" Well, in this case, we'd amend that to, "Don't judge a book by it's first six chapters!"

Claire Phillipson runs a home for domestically abused women in the UK and she thinks 50 Shades of Grey is counterproductive to her cause!

She only read two-thirds of the sizzling bit of erotic fiction, but she's confident the novel is only good for one thing: kindling!

Claire aims to burn these "vile" books and urges anyone who feels similarly to bring additional copies to her office for a bonfire!

We're confused… Is she suggesting we buy a copy of E.L. James' book so that we can bring it to her for torching??

Claire explained, kind of:

"I do not think I can put into words how vile I think this book is…[The idea is dangerous] that you get a sophisticated but naive, young women and a much richer, abusive older man who beats her up and does some dreadful things to her sexually."

That's one interpretation of the story, and one we can surely understand her having in light of the line of work she does. And while we applaud her for offering support to women who are indeed abused, the fictional characters Ana and Christian are two willing adults doing what they both AGREE to do and breaking no laws in the privacy of their bedrooms! We don't see the problem!

Claire, your charitable contributions are applaudable … but burning 50 Shades because it's pro-BDSM? C'mon!

Publisher Random House offered a short but entirely sufficient reply.

They said:

"The sex scenes are entirely consensual."

Game. Set. Match.

Random House published this shit? Apparently, all the editors and proofreaders were on leave when it decided to do so. It's the most poorly written printed book I've ever encountered!

  2. 2

Being tied up is one thing but pain? For me that's another it's just not what I'm into or would even waste my time reading

  3. 3

Although I don't agree with her reasoning, I think the books and anything related should be burned as well

If my writing were that shitty, I would use a pseudonym too. I completely agree with this woman's perspective, and would not want any woman that I love to think that Christian Grey treatment is okay. Outside of the bedroom, he still demands that she eats what he says, sleep as he says, work out as she says, and submit to his abusive nature. Abuse does not have to be psychical to "count", and it happens outside of the bedroom in this book.

The books aren't vile. They're badly written, full of errors, and a statement on the sad state of what passes for literature these days. I wouldn't wipe my ass with the pages, let alone read them.

  6. 6

Seriiously it is entertainment-reading isn't going to hurt you and you cetainly have free will! It's only entertainment not a suggestion.

  7. 7

Stupid bitch. all these people criticising it but yet theyve actually read them all? really? I suspect not just copying what othe critics have said. Plus this dumb woman is just giving the books even more publicity. She obviously doesnt understand about ROLE PLAY in relationships. Maybe she should remove that stick from her ass and quit confusing issues.

  8. 8

Re: Yes You Bore Me – so how do you know theyre badly written and error laden if you havent read them? yet another bandwagonner bad mouthing something they havent even tested!

There's nothing wrong with BDSM, but this is an awful representation of BDSM. I have a lot of friends who are fans of the BDSM subculture, and they all say this is nothing like it. In FSOG, the character is in an abusive relationship, pure and simple. She signs her life away on the whim of a manipulative older man, and people reading think this is what BDSM is about. It's not, and if they really want to be part of the lifestyle then they should research.

The idea of burning a book, however bad it is, is unacceptable. The church did that in the Middle Ages. Nazis did the same.

The problem is it glorifies this behavior and makes women believe that this is

    A. Common
    B. Appropriate
    C. Cool

If two mature, consenting adults want to partake in this type of behavior, it is what it is, but when a fictional book highlights a naive, young, insecure COLLEGE AGED woman being manipulated and brainwashed into thinking this behavior is what she wants and then glorifies the outcome, by awarding her with the love of a man for compromising what she wants sexually and emotionally, well, that is just wrong and is a reflection on the type of generation we are trying to mold in our children, especially our daughters.

Even more, this book should be rated. It is beyond R rated material and should be labeled as such.

  12. 12

I don't agree with book burning, even though this book is very badly written and misrepresents the BDSM culture.

  13. 13

Only trashy people who lack imagination, and literary taste read this crap. I can't believe the disgusting author of this book makes a million dollars a week off of it. She even looks like a slob. Whatever her fantasy is I sure as hell don't want it to be mine.
A lot of people talk shit about how they shun the book, but somebody's reading it!

  14. 14

    burn that shit!! burn!!!!

  15. 15

Re: PHWOARR – you people and your role play shit. I bet you think you're a vampire. Right?

or so you believe you're a "porn star"?

I have read the books and I agree they should be burned. A friend recommended it and I regretted reading it. There are a lot of better written books regarding this subject, this one sucks!

  17. 17

If you need to read this book to add a little spice to your life, then you need to rethink things.

I don't have a problem with the BDSM story line, and while I see the story line is about a consensual couple - I think the point you and others are missing that there is some serious emotional abuse and control issues in this relationship, and the message that a controlling and emotionally (and sometimes physically) abusive person can change because of 'true love' is a dangerous one. I've read the books and I think the overall theme is dangerous. I have no problem with the graphic sex scenes or the BDSM stuff (I actually think the writing on those subjects is fairly tame for the most part).

I agree that its a dangerous book for ANY person stuck in an unhealthy relationship, especially emotional and physical abuse.

  19. 19

Yes, PLEASE, let's burn every single copy of this horrible book.

    20

I totally agree with her…this is story it not about love, its about abuse, control and manipulation…and i find it so sad that so many women are falling for it. This kind of "literature" puts the woman's movement back years….

seems everyone commenting thinks this book is a piece of trash…you all have restored my faith in humanity

  23. 23

Agreed with the person who wants to burn the books and I hardly ever would say a book should be destroyed but this one is horrible. There's nothing wrong with BDSM when both parties enter into it in a healthy mental capacity but how he treats her is abusive and controlling. The fact so many women read this books and think that his behaviour is sexy and okay saddens me to no end.

After hearing about this book all summer, I saw it in Target, bought it for 10 bucks, even though the content is pretty much mental and physical abuse, the writing is what turned me off.I can read a story but when I am so distracted by the constant over use of 'my inner goddess" "oh my" "biting my lip" again and again and again, you could tell it was written by some overweight 50 year old soccer mom type. Was I wrong, nope. Never have I been so distracted by the believability of a book because the author came thru the story so strong. If I have bad writing, well, I am not selling a book. Don't waste your money.

I've read better and more graphic 'porn' on tumblr. I took the time and read the disastrous 'novel' or what is actually is, a fan-fiction. I don't agree with her reasoning, I do believe we should burn it.

  26. 26

Love the anti-50 Shades on this thread. Finally the backlash has begun. Thank God. Was beginning to think most people actually approved of such trash.

Consensual but he is taking advantage of her naïveté in some ways it's the equivalent of saying a kid is consensual sexually to an adult just because they r horny It is a horrible book and message. I read it all. This book is terrible for women.

I would advice you to do just a tiny bit of research before writing posts such as this one. 50 shades of gray is FULL of text-book Domestic and emotional violence that has nothing to so with the fact that they engage in BDSM. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. do a 10 min google search on domestic abuse and you will understand. This book is horrible and only those victims of this type of abuse can begin to understand it.

Re: PHWOARR – This is one of the most ignorant comments i have read. Please do a 5 min google search on what domestic abuse is. That is the problem with this book.

Thank you I was starting to believe that everybody approved the message these books were sending. This is not a romantic story is abuse.
