Mayor Bloomberg Speaks On Empire State Building Shooting

| Filed under: R.I.P.PolitikSad SadNew York

The shots at the Empire State Building were heard around 9am.

Two people were found dead (including the suspected shooter, 56-year-old Jeffrey Johnson), and there have been at least 8 reported to be wounded.

Six are currently in non-life-threatening condition at Bellevue Hospital.

At 11am, Mayor Bloomberg held a press conference to address the tragedy that just took place in his beloved city.

An avid supporter of gun control, Bloomberg says:

"Earlier this morning, a man who had been fired from his job about a year ago began shooting. He killed one person, at least nine shot. Some may have been accidentally shot by the police.

I ask everyone to keep victims in their thoughts. This is a terrible tragedy, and it would be no doubt more tragic without the heroic acts of the policemen. Every day, the police put their lives on the line to save lives bravely.

NYC is the safest big city in the country, but we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence. This is the beginning of an investigation. Two are dead — the perpetrator and his victim. He does not appear to have a criminal record [at this time]. We're just starting this investigation."

This will no doubt encourage conversations regarding gun control. With this incident and the Dark Knight Massacre happening with so little time in between, we're sure many more will now listen to the stance Bloomberg takes on the issue.

I live in NYC and believe it is crazy people, not guns, who kill people. Dont blame guns for irresponsible behavior. Ppl on cellphones in cars & 2nd hand smokers kill more people than guns violence against others. Why is it our society is looking at inanimate objects instead of teaching people to practice common courtousy and think of their fellow man.

Instead, we are looking to promote celebrities excess and reality TV, you reap what you sew. The same 1st amendment people use to advocate against the 2nd amendment will find them with neither.

safest big city in the country? yeah only since you learned to manipulate the facts and figures to give a false impression.

How could you not include the shooting that happened at the Sikh temple in regards to your comments about gun control? Along the exact same lines.

what about the sikh temple?? that was after dark night! its sad how people have ignored that because the victims aren't most people's view of what an "american" is supposed to be, even though that act was considered to be local terrorism.

Gun control only hurts those who wish to protect themselves & their families. NYC is one of the safest biggest cities?! What a joke…like Bloomberg.

Re: bluephoenix – "Gun control only hurts those who wish to protect themselves & their families."

    You're kidding, right?
Nobody, nobody needs to protect themselves and their families with guns!
We live in 2012, not the 19th century Far West!

Ban all types of guns. No permits for anyone!

"Gun control only hurts those who wish to protect themselves & their families."

The "Empire State Shooter/Disgruntled Former Worker" who decided to come back for a little vengeance against a former co-worker, may never have shown up for his revenge scheme or if the office workers didn't have their Constitutional Rights infringed upon and carried may have stopped him right then and there, and prevented the further harm to the public with the in-street in the middle of morning rush hour walkers being the unfortunate victims in addition to the office workers.

Yet another reason to allow armed New Yorkers!

I suppose if guns didn't exist, the person who murdered his former co-worker today would have had to resort to a kitchen knife, a hatchet, a car, an electrical cord, a hammer… The murderer didn't use assault weaponry, but a regular gun. Our real problem in our society over the last 50 years is that we've have been ecouraged by images of how to "solve problems" by acting out towards others instead of working things out within ourselves to achieve real solutions. Religiion and mores aside, no civiliation can survive or flourish if everyone is taught to believe that their rules trump everyone elses when convenient and justified.

"and it would be no doubt more tragic without the heroic acts of the policemen." um, it could have been LESS tragic if those police officers had been more careful since they shot bystanders. They could have been a tad more stealth when tailing the guy. If they had been, I doubt anyone else would have been hurt. I get it was a spur of the moment thing for those officers but when you start firing off your gun in one of the most populated areas of Manhattan then innocent people are going to be hurt. Kudos for them catching the guy though. It was brave of them to face such a crazed person. I just wish they'd been more careful.

This is getting ridiculous and something really must be done…it's not a black and white situation about gun control, in my opinion…there is more than one possible solution here. So tragic :(

Re: android – I hope that my right to protect myself is never taken away from me. That would be a sad day for this country. Do you really believe that nobody needs to protect themselves? You are completely naieve to think that taking legal guns, from law abiding citizens will decrease the criminal population.

  14. 14

Gun control? NYC has the strictest gun control in the nation lmao. If anything this will argue that it doesn't work. Lets also take into account how NYC has that strict stop and frisk policy that basically shits all over your 4th amendment right. This wasn't a killing spree. The cops shot the majority of bystanders. This guy just killed one person. Funny enough, MOST of the people who were wounded it was actually from the cops. The cops hit more people than the shooter.

NYC has strict gun laws..Good job with that. Why do morons use statistical anomalies to ban guns? Over the course of 13 years .000002% of this population went on a shooting spree. Gun deaths as a result of crime doesn't even hit the top 35 leading causes of death in America. While alcohol, tobacco, legal and illegal drugs overdoses, health related problems as a result of poor diets ALL surpass gun deaths. Considering theres 311 million people, 200 million guns and half the population is armed..One man and one gun out of that many does something bad and people cry "gun control"? Are people really this stupid? HEY IDIOTS, NYC has the strictest gun laws in the nation its a flat out ban. IDIOTS.

For every one guy that does something, theres literally 5 million gun owners who have and never will harm anyone. But apparently people are stupid and think 80,000,000 > 1 person.

Re: overthere – Well, if you're a girl and the best response time of a cop if you're actually able to call 911 surpasses 10 minutes, hopefully you get raped. Then maybe you'll change your tune on law abiding citizens having a gun in their home that stays in their home. If you're a male, well hopefully someone bum rushes you, hits you in the head out of nowhere and then proceeds to rape your wife/gf/daughter in front of you. That is what I WISH on idiots like you.

safest big city in the world huh? I'm calling BS why is it that nyc still has a high murder, rape, and violent crime rate because the criminals still have guns and people cannot defend themselves.

  17. 17

safest big city in the country? yeah except every now and then were prone to major terrorist attacks and gun violence. roll with that.
