MTV's VMA's Rating Numbers Down From Last Year

MTV's VMA's struggled to make par with the ridiculously high standards it has set for itself in the past.

Even though it was the top draw on cable television last night, the awards ceremony still lost HALF of its audience from last year and pulled in 6.1 million and earned a 2.8 rating.

Compare that with last year's record 12.4 million viewers and it is clear how big of a drop those numbers are.

Maybe next year they will keep it on a Sunday instead of the Thursday they scheduled it for this year.

Nicki Minaj won best video for "Starships"? It is a good song, I'll give you that, but the video is one of the worst videos of all time, so why give it the best award? And One Direction? They are a bought and paid for advertised act–not a true cultural phenomena like Justin Bieber was when he first hit the scene. This year's VMAs was nothing but an infommercial for whomever had the most bucks to buy the awards, and people had thier BS detectors on this year, and didn't bu yinto it. Stop force feeding us garbage!

We had better, vastly more important things to worry about. Like watching the DNC and beginning our homework on where we are today as a country, and where we need to be tomorrow. Election Season > VMA's. Plus, no Gaga, no Britney, NO THANKS.

I agree. That's because MTV is not as good as it used to be anymore. Why call yourself Music Television when there is hardly music shown? They should reallly go back to their old concept and get rid off all those reality shows etc.

no madonna no vmas… the entire NYC were at Yankee stadium to see Madonna tour …. not watching vmas. it sucked. last year sucked too. the greatest vmas moment were 2003. madonna brit and xtina.
if MTV wants HUGE RATING just has to aske madonna… superbowl was the highest tv audience in usa history.

There was a little get together called the Democratic National Convention going on that night…anyone with a brain was watching it. The VMA's have become a disappointing joke, it'll never be what it once was. 99/00 were the last two great VMA shows that MTV ever had.

MTV has turned into a ghetto award show. First of all their lineup was awful including Rihanna. We needed performers like GaGa, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Justin Beiber or even Cold Play without Rihanna, these people you would remember their performance for weeks or months. Also check out Lil Wayne sitting in the audience with headphones on listening to music and Nicki looked a hot ass mess including Drake all ghetto motherfuc*ers.

It always happens like that, one year it has a super high rating because kanye, beyonce, Jay z, Britney, Gaga are there and then the next year they rely on likes of Rihanna, Young money, Katy perry, Pink and Taylor swift to carry the show and ratings. The day they decide to have all of them together "competing" for moon-men then they'll get the ratings they want.

No offence, Perez, but I don't think airing it on a Thursday had anything to do with it..i mean, did you see the garbage that was on there? It was AWFUL. Nothing but a bunch of pop fucking teeny-boppers, auto-tuned princes and princesses, and anything else the music industry can duplicate and mass produce like bottles of water, which is essentially what they are…dull and tasteless. Serves MTV right. Maybe they'll get the hint this time.
