The friend confided to People Magazine:

This juicy bit of 411 might just boil the feud of DAIR vs CHAIR back into its bubbling existence!! Cuz according to Penn Badgley, he didn't want to play Dan Humphrey at first.
He actually wanted the role of Chuck Bass!
And get this — he was thisclose to turning down the offer from Gossip Girl all together!!
Could you imagine a life without Penn playing the Hipster King!?!
"My ego wanted to play Chuck Bass. No, it's not that I don't like my character. It's just, after a while, you're known as somebody that you're just not, and [Dan] is someone who I so am not. He's not real. He's a tool on a show with soap-operatic arcs and he needs to be a judgmental douche bag sometimes. I get that. I don't hate anybody for that. But it sucks when people call me "Dan" and think that I'm him."
Lonely Boy Penn further explains his situation, explaining how he had roles similar to Dan for years before GG offered him the chance to make out with Blake Lively:
"I wouldn't be here without Gossip Girl, so I will always be in debt and grateful. And I've said some sh*t that… I don't regret it, but I'm just maybe too honest about it sometimes. The reason I turned it down initially was because I was just frustrated. I was frustrated and I was broke and I was depressed, and I was like, 'I cannot do that again. I can't.' My parents and my managers, they let me come to my own conclusion, but they were like 'You need this, man'.
"They couldn't find anybody for it - which is weird, because a million people could play Dan Humphrey - and [the creator] came back around, I was about to get a job as a waiter, and I was like, 'Okay'. You know?"
And how about those sexy times with Leighton Meester, huh?? Yeah, he really liked those. But he will say:
"I didn't like how it ended, because it was just kind of [draws in breath sharply]. But I do like the scenes with Leighton because I get to kind of interact in a fun way with her. When Dan and Blair are together, I think that's him at his brightest, maybe."
WE FEEL YOU, DAN… WE MEAN, PENN… WE FEEL YOU!!!
But thanks to his time on the show, he's got bank for a lifetime (assuming he doesn't spend it like a crazy man). And now he gets to promote his new, more artistic movie — Greetings from Tim Buckley — where he plays the heavenly Jeff Buckley.
Skies are clear for you, pretty Penn! So clear!! Muah!!
Now, let us all bask in the glory of Lonely Boy's not so lonely moments, shall we?? We've hand-picked some shots of his best sex scenes for you to enjoy (below)! Have fun. XOXO.
