Steel Magnolias Lawsuit Thrown Out Right Before Lifetime Premiere!

| Filed under: TV NewsFilm FlickersLegal MattersQueen Latifah

Phew! That was a close one, wasn't it?

Victoria White, a producer of the 1989 classic Steel Magnolias, was apparently so upset about the Queen Latifah-starring remake premiering on Lifetime that she filed suit earlier this week claiming that because she was never notified about the new production, the network was in breach of contract!

However, despite her demands to cancel the airing, give her screen credit and a portion of its net profits, an El Lay judge threw out the request Friday morning…meaning the flick is good to go!

Very curious as to what caused her case to be dismissed, though!

She must not have had as much legal standing as she thought!

Oh well! We're just happy that this movie has the chance to make its debut as was originally planned!

Fingers crossed it will be just as powerful and touching as the original!

What do U think?? Are U/Will U be watching??

I thought the movie was cute. I liked it. Now I'm waiting to see how Lindsay does. Good luck boo. Team Lohan!

Victoria has nothing to worry about because this remake was such a travisty. Some movies should be left alone and this was one of them.

I sat through about 15 minutes and realized that it was exactly what I expected it to be: A bunch of black women doing that black-ghetto thing with southern accents, trying to erase the original version and failing miserably. Instead of destroying the brilliant and original creations of white people, the negroes should get a fucking clue and try to do original things (I'm looking at you and your fug daughter, Jada Smith). Oh, wait. Darkies only know how to take from others. My bad.

I wonder how "The Cosby Show", starring a new white cast, would do today? Or maybe an all-white "Family Matters" with a white Urkel? Or how about a new SHAFT movie, starring Jason Statham?

It was wrong, it was her story, & they should of had her permission, I don't blame her, this remake was one of the worst things I've ever seen, is Hollywood so elementary that they have no ideas of their own anymore??

I hate that they remade this movie, therefore I won't be watching it. There are certain movies that just shouldn't be touched. They're classics. It's like remaking Dirty Dancing, The Breakfast Club, The Neverending Story, or ET. Leave these movies ALONE. Be creative and come up with something new.

What an disappointment, When I saw this on last night I thought it was the one starring Sally Field and Julia Roberts. So I just changed the channel. Can not believe they did a remake…. shitty deal.

  12. 12

Copycats. I loved the original movie, one of the best all-women casts. This remake…just don't get the need to make it because the bar was too high.

It only took me 15 minutes also to realize these characters were not as strong and as passionate as the original cast. Queen L did not do Sally Field justice. Nothing will compare to the original.

I agree with others, this movie should have never been made. I was flipping through the channels and saw that my all-time favorite movie was on, but no, no it wasn't. Hollywood does need some originality and quit doing these awful remakes. The only half way decent remakes are the ones that can be made better with modern CGI. Period.

  15. 15

I didn't watch and I don't plan to watch. I'm not against remakes…if they honestly feel they can rework the movie and bring something new and exciting to it, I'm all for it. However, that's rarely the case. This is just the same movie done by black women…no point and it just wasn't needed. Let classics be classics.

I didn't watch the movie, but saw the commercial a million times. Why do they have these black women talking with thick southern accents?? Black people in the south don't talk like that. I wanna see a remake of" how Stella got her grove back" featuring Gwyneth Paltro. Or better yet the "white" sequel where she goes all ape shit when she finds out the new "grove" she got back was gay.

WHAT A JOKE!!!!!! This movie is an ORIGINAL AND A CLASSIC. GET YOUR OWN IDEAS!! These women are not even close to the caliber of actresses in the Original. Can't think of anything to do on your own–let's remake a successful white people movie–EPIC FAIL! Not to mention they knew it would suck that's why it went directly to Lifetime. No one wants to see that–It's Kinda like The Wiz–Black people re-making a classic again–The Wizard of Oz was made 40 years prior to this travesty. Absolutely horrible. Movies, Music, Tv, anything else you wanna try??

Perez, I am disappointed that you allowed these responses go on your page un-monitored. I understand that you like juicy gossip and a bitch fight or two, but the comments regarding the remake of this movie are disgraceful and disgusting. You have readers that are spewing hate…PANSY HUNTER….with HER racist remarks. I love the original and I love the remake. I watched with a critical eye so that I could give an objective review and found that the remake was just as warm and tear-jerking as the original. The script was written so that it matters not the color of the cast as long as the story remains true and the delivery was proper. So to all the hater mongers out there and those who decided not to watch because the cast was black….YOUR LOSS!! And Perez, as blogger/psuedo-journalist, you need to monitor the comments on your site a little bit better. You may lose a few readers since they may attach the thoughts and comments of your readers and associate them to you. Just sayin'!

This is actually racist..why would you remake a movie changing the ethnicity of the characters… I couldn't even watch it ..one of my favorites and a classic…some nerve they have to remake it like this …

Re: Pansy Hunter – Mr. Or Ms. Hunter, I guess you do not know about history, where many songs were stolen from African Americans. Oh, let's not forget about how many scientific discoveries and patents were taken from the black community. You are a moron who clearly does not know history or maybe there are no libraries within the 25 mile radius of your trailer park. Original creations…okay first get a freaking life & then complete your HOP session so you can start having educated discussions based on reality.

This movie should have been shown on tvone or bet or centric i knew when it was going to be aired on lifetime it would give negative views and very nasty racial remarks. Its sad we are still at this in 2012.

  26. Honey240queen says – reply to this

Okay no need to go crazy rascist people.

I am completely appauled they re made this amazing movie, and with a weak casting to go along just makes it more insulting to the original and its loyal fans. I loved the 1989 film, and will never watch this version. Not cause of colour, but because of quality. This cast can't hold a candle to Sally Field, Julia Roberts, etc. I am a fan of Queen Latifa, but I am saddened she didn't have the realization that this movie shouldn't have been supported as a remake. I guess she just wanted the glory of saying "i played Ma'Lynn."

I am however ashamed at the evil and mean spirited comments left here. Absolutely disgusting.

  27. 27

I watched it just last night and I quite enjoyed it. They stayed pretty close to the original and I though some of the casting was great. I went into it with an opened mind like I try to always with remakes and I will be keeping it on my dvr.

I am disgusted to read all of these racist comments. It is sad to read how so many gay people (I assume) are being racist on this blog. People fight for gay rights, but this proves gays are racist too. I thought this movie was good. Not better than the original, but well received. BTW, the actors in this remake are accomplished. The color of person skin should not dictate who can and cannot make a remake.

NO! i will not!!! what the f*ck is wrong with the american movie industry that they have to continuously remake great films! cop on and wise up!

  31. 31

corny and boring, but so what? You wouldn't have any black people saying these things. Re: Gemma B

  32. LeighIsSad says – reply to this

This "movie" was atrocious. I, like others saw the title on the channel guide and was excited to see two pigs fightin' in a blanket…all I saw was bad acting and a different breed of dog. Nice diabetic shock scene–that nobody actress looked like she was constipated. This cast (black, white, green, whatever) does not for a second hold a candle to the original. Every good line was delivered wrong and the script was decimated. Ugh even mrs cosby sucked in the final "go ahead ma'lynn slap her" scene. Just a painful painful to watch remake. Black white and green thumbs DOWNNNNNNNNNNNN.

    Re: Pansy Hunter

Omg..i never actually thought racism still existed. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but seriously is bashing black people really necessary? I bet you are one of those types that sit behind a computer screen but dont if your ass was in the public talking wreckless like that your ass would end up stanking in a river bitch. But oh well i dont blame you for hating black people or being a racist..guess your parents was sum deadbeat weak ass mf who didnt raise u right
