Today Show Cast & Crew No Longer Blame Matt Lauer For Ann Curry's Firing

| Filed under: TV NewsMedia Minute

Matt Lauer has been largely blamed for Ann Curry's firing and the Today Show's bad ratings, but now sources are singing a different tune.

Since it's been revealed that executive producer Jim Bell is the person responsible for getting rid of Curry, "the cast and crew have rallied around Matt."

A source has come forward to explain the shift in his popularity on set and said:

"The cast and crew have rallied around Matt and feel that he has been unfairly blamed for Ann's firing. Jim Bell, the executive producer, actually made the decision that Ann had to go, not Matt."

The whole situation that lead to Savannah Guthrie becoming Matt's co-anchor "wasn't handled well at all" so now everyone is moving forward and focusing on getting "back on top" of Good Morning America in the ratings.

The source continued to assert that Lauer "has been unfairly blamed" for a situation out of his control and added:

"If Matt was such a tyrant to be around, why has he had the same assistant for over 15 years? Bryant went through a slew of assistants during his time at NBC and Matt has only had one during his tenure. A majority of the producers have also been on the staff for a number of years — if Matt was so horrible to be around, why isn't there a revolving door of exits?"

Regardless of how various people feel, at least everyone working on the show is back on the same page and ready to move forward as a united team.

U think this new acceptance of Lauer will help Today bounce back from second place in the ratings?

They will when rating tank further and they are all fired & walking the street of NYC panhandling.

  2. 2

as may be, but the ratings are still in the tank.

  3. 3

During Ann Curry's final show, Matt Lauer's body language indicated he was happy to see her go. This is another attempt to increase ratings and Lauer's popularity.

Total B.S.Matt wanted her gone and now they`re trying to spin it because ratings are so bad.

This is so obvious — even to the people who don't watch the show. Everyone has been blaming Matt for Ann's leaving. Now that ratings continue to fall, they are coming up with excuses to attempt to make Matt look good - grasping at straws!! What a bunch of hooey. Again, why don't they get it? No one likes Matt! Get rid of him! Ratings will not go up until you do!

  6. 6

They can spin it any way they want. Everyone knows Matt is to blame and the audience does not like him.

Suuuuuuuuure it was the producer yup I believe it. If that's the case he should have squashed the rumours on matt being reason to her firing long before now. LAME excuse to try and get ratings back. They need a fresh new male face get rid of the old and bring in a bit younger more hip to bring in younger audiences. Same old same old different woman sitting met to him. After 15 years its nothing but…. YAWN

Nobody can convince me that Matt didn't have something to do with Curry leaving.
I am laughing, because ABC's Good Morning America is stomping the squash out of the Today Show. He didn't like her from the beginning, and it was so obvious…..and,they pay him the big money………………why?

I just read all the comments!

Wow…they are desperate to get viewers to forgive Matt. I think it would take some humillity displayes by NBC and Matt Lauer. No, I do not buy it. Matt did not hide he did not care for Ann and he showed it on camera. Shame on Matt!

Ratings are not in the Tank! Since when is 4 Million viewers bad? 20 years ago 3.5-5 Million Viewers was in the normal Ratings range for a Morning show. they are not tanking, They are holding stead with GMA. Ann Curry even said that she does not blame Matt for her getting Fired.

Doesn't matter what the cast and crew think. It's the Public that affects the ratings. And the Public believes Matt Lauer is to blame. Ann Curry's body language at her announcement and at the opening of the Olympics PLUS Al Roker's 'under the bus comment'…yeah nice try NBC. FAIL.

This is just "spin" they are putting out trying to get people to like Matt again and regain some of their ratings. I'm not really buying it. I agree, if this was true, they'd have mentioned this much earlier. But instead, they thought the backlash from the viewers would be short lived and the problem would go away. Instead, it's getting worse.

Bullshit. They put some nobody producer out from nowhere to take the fall, figuring you people are dumbness to believe it, and you are. My sources tell me different. If Matt wanted Ann to stay, he could have block it. Why did he not come out and stay she was getting a raw deal, before she was fired? You know why?

Matt was in a position to stop what took place or to have influence. For NBC to say he did not have influence is a lie… if you make 250000 on a show you have influence.. Just smoke and mirrors here. They were Rude in any case. I will not watch Today again for Bell's call… either way..

  18. ladylike says – reply to this

Sure. I wasn't born yesterday. Jim Bell just wanted to save Matt further persecution from the fans. Too late. Recommend NBC to get fresh, younger, and more talented host and co-host. It is time to change the format while they are at it! Matt and Savannah have to go. No chemistry whatsoever. I haven't watched the show since Ann Curry left.

Re: Bob – I agree wholeheartedly. They are coming up with excuses. I have not watched the network at all since the Today Show debacle. They really out the "screws" to their people-David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Regis Philbin, Ann Curry etc. I am glad to see them fall in the ratings. Perhaps they need to clean house of their executives–starting with Jim Bell. Bring on new and fresh talent–executive wise. Also, lets see Matt Lauer get a public "beatdown". Do you think he is a bully? I know he is NOT talented as far as a reporter should be.

  23. Jess says – reply to this

That's wonderful. Your rating are in the toilet, your head anchor is hated by everyone, and your show is crap. But we are all glad your not blaming Matt Lauer.

I miss Anne Curry! Anne was genuine and I related to her. I want to watch NBC as I have for 45 years, but Savanah is too green and everyone is trying way to hard to get back on top. It's embarrasing. It was like a family when Anne or Merrideth were on. I wish we could get back to that. I am now watching Charlie Rose, a class act all the way. Not a fan of GMA, they're trying to hard too!

Get Anne Back Please! Hoda and Kathy Lee are trashy and the wine thing is inappropriate for am television.

    Just one guys opinion!
