North Carolina College Students Vote To Kick Chick-Fil-A Off Campus

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayPolitikInspiration

North Carolina voters may have approved a same-sex marriage ban in the state, but college students at Elon University do not share the same sentiment.

In response to Chick-fil-A's donations to anti-gay organizations, the student government voted 35-11 to ask the university's food vendor to remove the homophobic chain from the food court in the student center.

The decision will still be up to the school's head honchos, but if they agree with the student representatives, then Elon University will become the THIRD college in the state to end its relationship with chicken joint.

It's so nice to see young people taking a stand against dated and discriminatory values!

If they don't want that greasy shiz on campus, then it's their right to get rid of it.

I think this is ridiculous ..lord forbid u dont agree with peoples way of living they wanna nail ya to the cross ..you cannot force your gay lifestyle on other people We all have a right to our own opinion an way of living! So stop shoving it down our throats im a little sick of it and I really dont care!!

  2. 2

Dumb asses. They are 4 months too late. The Student government holds no power lul. The college isn't about to drop something that makes them money. Which is ultimately what its about.

I would ask them this "ok so you want chick-fil-a gone because they have a different opinion than you?" "Ok well, since X amount of people are about to lose their jobs because you have thin skin, pick one person and then pay them the same amount of money they make for 3 months or until they get their first paycheck from a new job"

It's only fair right? Managers, employees, etc do not share the same opinion as the chains CEO. People are suffering because well, humans are dumb.

Whatever. So what if they don't believe in same sex marriage? Don't eat there. Go eat at McDonald's where animals serve you and the place is as filthy as the projects the employees live in… Fuck you libs…. I don't believe in same sex marriage… Not a goddamn thing you can do about it either

  4. 4

One man's opinion is now losing people their jobs. Not everyone at Chick-Fil-A has his opinion, but they get punished? It's not fair. I get it, people don't want their money going there, but dont eat there if that's how you feel.

So much for tolerance! It amazes me how people who support gays are intolerant of people with other opinions. Brilliant.

You can be sure that is mainly liberal loon students from the north that have brought their views and opinions to the south.

I'm not against gays, I am against this bullying. Now all these people lose their jobs. Intolerance at it's finest.

So because of the CEOs views normal people who need to work have to suffer? Awesome way to show how not to discriminate.

The three schools involved in this story are Davidson, Duke, and now Elon. According to Davidson’s own website, “News reports that Davidson College has “booted” Chick-fil-A off its campus are inaccurate and misleading. There is no formal relationship between Davidson College and Chick-fil-A and the restaurant chain has no facility on campus”. Last year before the controversy, Chick-fil-A and Subway were told they would not be included in a group of facilities moving to the new West Union at Duke University. They’ve stated that their vision for the new West Union is modeled on Eataly in New York which does not include any fast food brands. Elon University’s student government has voted, 35-11, to get rid of a Chick-fil-A on campus. Darien Flowers, executive president of said organization wishes to talk to students and other people before making a decision. The ultimate decision on whether the fast food restaurant stays or goes will be made by senior administrators and Elon’s president. An online poll found 64 percent opposed to the removal of Chick-fil-A from campus, with 29 percent in favor.

Their still going strong on our campus. Not a wimper.

actually, no one will lose their job because the chick-fil-a on campus will be replaced with another food vendor, and will be worked by the same staff that worked at the campus chick-fil-a. people should be reminded that most revolutionary ideas start with students taking a stand, and if no one takes a stand nothing will ever change. how do we stop the control of ideology that takes away human rights? we vote with our wallets, stand up as students and show them that there are people who disagree. we owe this to the people who suffer daily due to other people's ignorance and cruel opinions.

  14. 14

Can we all live in harmony and agree that their chicken sandwiches are good? Last thing I'm thinking about when my stomach is growling is about gay agenda. The college will still have them around because it funds them and with government cutting cost left and right why wouldn't they? If you don't agree with Chick-fil-a then don't eat there.

This is such a misrepresentation of the university and its student body. So here's what the situation really is: a vote was held (open to all 5000 students) during the middle of midterms week when everyone who actually has work to do (of course not theatre/art majors who are against CFA) is studying and had no time to sit through a 2 hour student government meeting to vote. Also, fall break began the next day so many students had already left to go home for break. There is no way a 35-11 vote will hold up to represent 5000 students. Especially when the school is not going to sit down and look at every organization they have ties with and see who they contribute money to.

    17

The students should check their facts… As of September 19 executives announced that Chick-fil-A will no longer donate money to "anti-gay groups" or discuss hot-button political issues. If tolerance is what students are proclaiming they seek, why not tolerate the chain being on campus? If people choose not to buy the products the company will not stay based on $$

  18. LJ says – reply to this

    18

except the student body did not vote to do this. i go to this university and it was the student government that voted on it–35 out of 6000 students. they set the forum up at a time when we were all already gone on fall break

    19

If this was true and accurate then good luck to the future graduates of this university because soon they will be out searching for a job or employed by a company that doesn't follow their personal beliefs. Then they will have to make the decision of having an income or "sucking it up" like I'm sure the current chick fil A employees who don't believe in the owners beliefs but can't quit due to financial reasons.

This is just another example of the fact that sooner rather than later… equal marriage and equal rights will be legal on a national level. The younger generations are tolerant of the GLBT community. It's just a matter of time. Get on the right side of history - all in good time, folks. Anti-Equality politicians are a dying breed.

    Word from an Elon Student:
While the Elon Student Government voted 35-11, a fact not shared in this story is that the schools newspaper conducted a survey of Elon Students and over 70% voted to KEEP CHICK FIL-A ON ELONS CAMPUS. The Student Government Association is not a representative sample of student body votes. Both will be taken into consideration when the school board decides whether to ask them to leave campus or not.

    Wow you all are silly.
    1) Elon is majority fratastic Romney loving rich kids, so that fact his was passed here just shows how well informed the SGA was about Chick-fila's activities
2)Chick-fila did indeed say they would stop donating money to these groups that endorse "conversion therapy" and other sick twisted ways of getting the "gay out of people", but they didn't so that is why they were voted off.
    3) People won't lose jobs, the chick fila in question is university employed so the employees will keep there jobs
    4) Those of us in favor of this want to keep our gay community feeling safe and comfortable , and that's more important to us that a chicken sandwich so screw the company who wont hire me because of that.

If everyone on campus disagrees, they should have thought about that when they voted for their school officials. its everyones personal responsibiltiy to vote, and if you don't vote and your voice doesn't get heard then its your own fault. i attend this university also, it doesn't matter if you were on fall break, your individual vote on this matter wasn't taken, it was the elected student government members who voted on it.

    2. A corrected version of the story above from the AP press was available before this post. Duke wishes to stay neutral on the subject, It was all about the Benjamins for Duke, when they renovated, Chikfila didn't offer the school enough for a spot.

    Re: NookiesWA
I am an Elon student, and as such I have a couple of things to say.
First, The school was split on the decision. There was an open forum and the side opposing the removal of Chick-Fil-A did not make a strong enough argument.
Second, at Elon we are all about making sure that every single member of our community feels at home here, even if that means doing something others think is nonsensical. It is not about anyone else.
Third, since you brought up the jobs of the employees let me enlighten you. The Chick-Fil-A is on our campus through Aramark. It is not run like a stand alone restaurant, so the workers are employed through Aramark. If Chick-Fil-A is removed it will be replaced by a new food vendor and the employees will continue their jobs. So there will be no job loss.

I would also like to point out that just because you do not understand something or you don't think it is a good idea does not mean it it dumb. This is the exact same thing as you said about Elon wanting Chick-Fil-A gone because they have a different opinion that we do. Don't be a hypocrite. And Honestly, who are you you decided the validity of a decision that absolutely nothing to do with you.

    Hello Biggots!

I go to Elon. It's not about the majority of the student body wanting it or not- it's about what Chic-fila has come to symbolize (intolerance, ignorance and anti-gay hate groups). Let's all remember at one point in time the majority was also in favor of slavery, against womens rights and now this. No one is losing their jobs, it's a part of a larger corporation on campus-so all the employees will stay. This isn't about free speech-funds from chic-fila funnel DIRECTLY into these anti-gay CLASSIFIED HATE ORGANIZATIONS. I don't care about Dan Cathy's opinions, I care about where this companys money goes.

Oh and FYI-students don't have an option of whether or not to support or not support Chic-fila, it's a block meal plan program. Which means you pay money up front and it goes directly to Aramark, who then pays Chic-fila. Regardless of whether or not you eat it-they're making money. Which then means that money goes to hate groups.

    BYE CHIC FILA. BYE.

I am an Elon student and I would just like to say this is not something everyone on campus agrees with. I personally believe it is my right to eat at Chick Fila just as much as it is someone else's right not to eat there. I also don't think that my rights should be taken away just because some students don't care this restaurant chain.

Leon's policy is one that promotes diversity and inclusion for all people, regardless of gender, race sexual orientation etc. I find it admits table that they not only hold their students and faculty to this standard, but also any business that has a presence on campus. As an Elon alum and a proud homosexual man, I am happy to see Elon's community forcing accountability upon Chick-Fil-A and sending a message that bigotry and hate will not be tolerated.

    Re: OjsakilaRe: Ojsakila
First of all, Elon would not be losing any money if they removed Chick-Fil-A from campus because they would replace it with an equally profitable business. If there was an anti-semetic or anti african american business on campus, people would not hesitate to remove it. However, homosexuals are the targeted minority group in our society, so there is naturally mixed feelings about how to handle this issue. Years from now people will wonder why homosexuals were treated so poorly, just like those in my generation are appalled by the former treatment of african americans in our country.

I go to Elon University and let me tell you this is not something the school community wanted. 2/3 of the student body voted to keep the chain on campus yet because of some members of the LGBT community feeling their voices were more important than others, everyone in the community has to pay. I am so tired of this political bullshit.

    40

As a student at Elon, I have always been proud of the university and its administration for supporting diversity and vehemently opposing practices throughout the community that are constituted as bullying. Everyone had the chance to be heard by SGA either at the meeting, or online, and all the statements were presented at the meeting to the entire population present. Then the officials, that we elected to SGA office, voted, with the majority against keeping our business relationship with Chick-fil-A. But, it's not set in stone, yet. When it is, Elon with most likely cut ties with Chick-fil-A because they represent a set a beliefs that are in complete opposition of the school's practices and honor code. The students are the reason Elon functions every day, and we have spoken.

For everyone who thinks that this is about freedom of speech, it is not (as I originally thought). I am a student at Elon and I was originally really against the removal of Chick-fil-a from campus, but after talking with other students I think differently. Chick-fil-a has every right to their opinion, but there are Elon students who feel that where Mr. Cathy donates money is unacceptable and we do not want university money to be supporting these organizations.

(Also for those of you talking about jobs, the people working at the small stand in our student center are employees of Aramark and will not be losing their jobs, just moving to whatever may replace Chick-fil-a if that decision is made.)

Please check out this article that one of our students wrote for a little more clarification on the stance of the organization that sponsored the petition

Re: Ojsakila – Elon University is a private institution, and Chick-Fil-A doesn't make them any money. Elon UNiversity pays Aramark to provide this restaurant and all others on campus. It was also made aware to students before the decision was made that NO EMPLOYEES WOULD BE IMPACTED BY THIS DECISION. So the only dumb human being here is you. Research things before you bash an institution for allowing the students, who are the reason it exists, to have a say in what happens on THEIR campus.
