Former Best Actor Nominee Joaquin Phoenix Thinks The Oscars Are 'Bullsh*t'

| Filed under: Film FlickersJoaquin Phoenix

Andddddddd his chances for taking home an Academy Award for his critically acclaimed performance in The Master just plummeted! LOLz!

Joaquin Phoenix doesn't care though, which is kind of admirable. The actor — who made his glorious return to the screen in September after a failed rapping career mockumentary –believes Hollywood's highest honor is "total, utter bullsh*t."

He made his opinion known during a recent interview with highly respected film critic Elvis Mitchell for Interview magazine and explained his position by saying:

"I think it's bulls–t. I think it's total, utter bulls–t, and I don't want to be a part of it. I don't believe in it. It's a carrot, but it's the worst-tasting carrot I've ever tasted in my whole life. I don't want this carrot. It's totally subjective. Pitting people against each other … It's the stupidest thing in the whole world."

Is it really? Or is he just bitter because he was nominated for Walk the Line and lost?

If we take him at his word, then yes, the award really is stupid and he thought so long before he had his chance to take one home. Phoenix revealed he felt "uncomfortable" when he was nominated while continuing:

"It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when Walk the Line was going through all the awards stuff and all that. I never want to have that experience again. I don't know how to explain it — and it's not like I'm in this place where I think I'm just above it — but I just don't ever want to get comfortable with that part of things."

After every Academy voter finds out just how much he despises the Oscars, then maybe he won't. Still, we kinda hope he does because in our minds, talent deserves to be rewarded!

Wow, he looks nothing like his brother(RIP) .

  2. 2

    what an obvious hair piece

  3. 3

Oh he's sooo avante garde, so non-hollywood. He Shia LeBeouf, and James Franco should just drop out of Hollywood and put on plays for each other in their backyards.

INGRATE!! Good give the bullshit acting jobs to someone who has some bills to pay.

Joaquin Pheonix is a full-of-himself douche bag, just like Shia LeBeouf. I don't understand how those two assholes get hired; I deliberately avoid their fucking movie so studios don't get my money for hiring them. Though I admit I did check out Shia's peen video and laughed like hell watching him make a fool of himself. It's easy to bash the Hollywood culture once you've made millions from it, right, assholes? I know, Perez, you'd love to have that kind of fame and fortune. But you're too much of a homo. And you're an idiot. At least Phoenix and LeBeouf like vaginas.

I remeber when he won the Golden Globe for Walk the Line and I remember saying "he looks like he doesn't want to be there". And he was just awkward, maybe he really doesn't like award shows. It doesn't have to be bitterness.

I loved him in "still not here" or whatever its called. I like and agree with his take on film and the industry. And OF COURSE he's ungrateful! Hollywood is ungrateful!

I don't think it's a reverse psychology strategy on his part. I really think that he is a true artist and IS uncomfortable with saying who is "best" that year at acting. I think he is one of the best actors EVER. I see a movie a week. I've seen everything he's ever been in. His performances are always riveting. That is why Russell Crowe went on record saying that he'd like to do EVERY movie with Joaquin. Joaquin has an interesting face, body language, and intensity. I feel him so much. And for the superficial person that stated he looks nothing like his deceased brother, River. . .you're an ass! YOU are the reason Joaquin despises the superficiality of Hollywood. Awards, who looks better, etc. Just ridiculous! It's about the work. He delivers like no one else. I just saw, "The Master." Joaquin was his usual mesmerizing self. I will see anything he is in. He's the real deal.

I definitely see where he's coming from. Hes an artist, in a sense, and these movies are all thoughtful masterpieces by hard working teams. It's not fair to say any movie is necessarily "better" than another. It has to feel terrible to be told in front of millions of people that you're not good enough.

why the fcuk do you attend them? I can't stand people like Joaquin, too good for the awards, angry he didn't win, get over yourself.

Didn't he and his brother get raised in some weird cult or commune? I love the Academy Awards and do not care if he likes them or not. I enjoy the dresses, the music and the overall glamor.

    Re: bella – Shut up.

#12 - you're asking if he grew up in some weird cult or commune. As compared to Catholicism? Yeah, that wholesome religion of priests f*cking kids, blessing wars, worshiping idols, sexism, fear-based/guilt-ridden worship. . .shall I go on? If you don't like him, don't like him. Don't start in on his place of worship, especially since you're not even sure who or what he worships. Get a life!

i agree with the pitting people against each other isnt fair. they are all nominated for outstanding performances and only one can win? its disregarding to the others who put a lot of hard work and are just as talented. the Oscars seem rigged. i do ilke joaquin he is a very good actor.

Joaquin is the type of guy who likes acting but dislikes the fame. That's why most of his interviews are so awkward. But before you criticize the guy…a lot of times it is a part of their movie contracts to go to interviews, award shows where the movie is nominated, and stuff like that.
A lot of people, probably think like Joaquin, they just don't have the guts to say it. So no, I don't think he is ungrateful. His only obligation is to perform his job well, the rest, he should do only if he wants to.
About the Oscars…everyone with TRUE taste knows that the Oscars are mostly dominated by the american and british movie industry, with the occasional foreign movie in a main category that its so good it can be ignored. But if you actually bothered to search for good movies, or look for the highest reviews, most of the movies nominated wouldn't even be on the list.

  18. 18

Yea so what else it new?

  19. fan says – reply to this

He was nominated for 2 Oscars. For Gladiator and Walk the Line. He's clearly not upset over the loss. He's upset over how phony and narcissistic Hollywood has become.

  20. MAL says – reply to this

Geez he is looking old! What's he been doing to himself? His mocumentary made him seem like a spoiled, moron. Too bad! I really like "ed" him as an actor.

To be grateful, is to believe that you should not be judged for your own individuality. Anyone can choose how they make a living. Acting is how Joaquin chose to make his. Critics make a living, off of hurting and judging individuality. I see that it is not of Joaquin's Human Nature to lower himself to humor the Critics. It is the Critics whom have given you the impression of Joaquin as Arrogant. Doesn't that only make you a critic? You are thinking what they want you to think. Think for yourselves. Be genuine. Joaquin is just doing what he loves to do. Why can't he do that, without worrying about being judged? I go to work as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner everyday, because I love to help others. I get gratitude by showing others support and kindness. I do not want to go to work and be judged. This would make me not want to go to work. Just because Joaquin is famous he can't have this privilege. Just be who you are at heart. That is all Joaquin is doing.
