Watch Lana Wachowski's Inspiring Speech About Her Transgender Experience

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayFilm FlickersInspirationLGBT

Lana Wachowski, the director of Cloud Atlas, has not made a public appearance to promote her and brother Andy's films in 12 years.

While the filmmaker prefers anonymity, she decided it was finally time to talk about her private struggles that so many others go through too. She got a great opportunity in San Francisco recently when she was honored with the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award.

The "painfully shy" woman behind The Matrix took advantage of the attention to speak about her transgender experience that started when she was a young child in Catholic School and continues to this day.

Mixing humor and brutal honesty, she takes the audience on a walk in her shoes as she recounts the day she almost committed suicide, the day she came to terms with who she really was, the day her parents accepted her femininity and the day she decided to sacrifice her private civic life to make this world a better place for the entire LGBT community.

Take some time and watch the incredible speech (above). We promise you'll laugh, you'll cry and maybe grow a little bit as a person.

Most of all, you'll be hoping that she makes these types of public appearances more often.

i want to hug you. not that you need or want my hug. just to show you there are folks out here who want you and except you in whatever you - you choose to be. i know in my heart this message will not find you but it may find someone dancing on the edge of such a life choice who doubts themselves. be happy. find your way. do it. love is out there and folks that dont love you are not worth your time.

  5. 5

Gross, this thing should be put to sleep.

Re: ParisIsBurningRe: Kemmg – Well, I think you both would make good compost because heaven knows you suck at being human beings. I can't say that I understand what these people go through because I love being a woman and have never have desired to be anything else. But imagine how hard it must be to live in your own body because you feel as though you were born "wrong". These people aren't hurting anyone. Save your hatred for the child molesters and the animal torturers.

I've been a perez-junkie for years… and I've NEVER commented on a post! Much like Lana said, anonymity is like virginity, you only lose it once! What a sweet, articulate and insightful human being. Kudos to Lana for sharing her experience and stepping up as a transgender role model for younger kids, I was really touched by her gentle spirit and raw honesty. She's really beautiful, inside and out.

Amazing speech. Made me laugh. Made me cry. Made me smile. You are beautiful inside and out Lana. I hope that anyone reading this that are similarly situated to Lana realize that many, many people probably do and will love you for who you are. "There's nothin' wrong with lovin' who you are" She said, "’cause He made you perfect, babe"

To those who say that trans people are disgusting and that God didn't make them this way, I say that God intended for them to have a road to follow as he did for us all. I also do not remember Jesus ever saying anything about gender or sexual orientation. I do remember several occasions where he mentioned that judging others is a sin. Every rights movement had to face resistance from people who hate for no reason but to hate and judge. Once upon a time, people who were ”Non-Whites” were not seen as equal human beings. Time builds bridges and people become more tolerant. If your religion is the reason for your hatred and your ignorance, I leave you with this: ”You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.”

sad that this is legal..docs are not supposed to harm peep…he needed shrink help not botched surgery….sure seems zero percent girl to me.

  19. Placeb0 says – reply to this

Re: plo83 – i am not religious whatsoever and I completely disagree with those whole transgender aspect. It's not only Jesus lovers who are against it and don't believe in it. It's just not right or normal. Live the way you were fucking born. How docked is our society that we can just change our entire body and voice and hormones that make them grow or lose hair. They we'd help. Psychological help. Also, racism still exist. Jus as homophobia poverty and people against lgbt will always exist. Deal with it.

  20. Ojsakila says – reply to this

You allow comments on this idiot freak yet no comments on a bullied teen that kills herself…. What's your criteria in determining what we can comment on?

  21. plo83 says – reply to this

Re: Placeb0 – Who are you to decide what is normal and what isn't? Is something that you do not usually see abnormal? If so, that causes many issues and you're going to have a long list. I find it funny that you're able to compare this to racism and homophobia. Clearly, you can even subconsciously make the association between the trans struggle with a human rights issue. These people need psychological help to accept themselves-not as a cure. That would be like saying that a gay person should seek therapy to become ”normal”. If we ”lived the way we were born” as you put it, many people would die. People are often born with defects that need surgical correction in order to survive. If you think that one's mentality cannot kill or is not important vs a physical defect, I suggest that you look up the rate of suicide in trans people. You may not agree with their life just as they may not agree with yours. The key here is respect and non-violence.

  22. plo83 says – reply to this

Re: alan – Psychology cannot help. This is like thinking that you can ”cure” a gay person… It's impossible. Why would someone even attempt that in the first place? For a trans person to have their corrective surgery, they need to undergo much therapy. You cannot wake up one day and decide to get this done. Who would do that anyways… They feel like they are trapped in the wrong body and have a disdain for their natural body. It does not match their mentality. A doctor is in fact helping when they provide corrective surgeries. If you want to take on doctors that do not help, I suggest that you look at all the plastic surgery done on obsessive people who in most cases did not even need it in the first place.

  23. Lala says – reply to this

I don't get it. This is an honest question, not to bash anyone. Are transgender men to women supposed to act like real women or do they act and have mannerisms of their own? Women don't act or have mannerisms like this. And these people still look like their original gender. So confusing!

  24. plo83 says – reply to this

Re: Lala – What does a woman act like? It's different by the person. You may have per-conceived ideas because a lot of people follow gender stereotypes in order to not be labeled as marginals and shunned from our very judgmental society. I would say that she is acting however she wants to act. Being a woman is about much more than how you act. Also, some trans people are more ”passable” than others. Some have many surgeries and others are naturally passable. Some do not even care if they are not passable. It's about being able to live as who you feel that you are. Look at Isis from ANTM. She is very passable, feminine and dainty. It's because she feels that way. Not all naturally born women feel like that so why should all male to female trans people do? I hope this answers your question.

  25. Ceef says – reply to this

Wow! The only thing I'm disgusted by here is all the hyper-judgmental fuckheads who think they have license to tell somebody they're disgusting just because they don't fit your unimaginative idea of what a man is or what a woman is. That speech is going to break down a bunch of walls, but not for fucktard bigots like you. Please go on living your unimaginative and unspired, bullshit, samey lives being angry and crying at anything that doesn't fit your idea of how the world should be.

  26. 26

I applaud this woman's courage, determination, and willingness to be persecuted for doing what is right for her. The hair, however, has got to go …

  27. 27

This thing is a dude. I don't care what he did to butcher his body and turn it into a female facsimile, but his DNA is male. That means dude. All you touchy-feely types applauding this gross defective are idiots. You don't indulge sickness, you TREAT IT. And people like this guy are SICK. Transgender my ASS. And fuck you if you don't like what I think or say. You think any of your stupid comments will change it? We've become way too soft a society, and it's going to lead to our extinction. I refuse to applaud self-indulgent twats like this Wachowski dude. Better he should be culled from the gene pool.

  28. HJMP says – reply to this

I am truly shocked at the hatred spewed towards this person, it seems like such a waste of energy and emotions to direct such malice towards a person who has never done anything to you nor have you ever met. If someone wants to alter their body, go for it, as long as you have really thought about it and feel it will make you happier. I have no business whatsoever telling someone what they can and cannot do to their body. I know I would be upset if someone tried to tell me I'm not allowed to get my haircolour changed, have a mastectomy or lose/gain weight. I don't usually comment but I felt I had to say something about all this hatred, it really got to me.

  30. PansyHunterIsATool says – reply to this

    Re: Pansy Hunter
And since when did any of your pseudo-intellectual rants ever change anything? That's right, never! The only person who sounds sick on here is you! Treat it, bitch!

  31. automaticsystematic says – reply to this

To the people who say "don't mess with nature" and "God this, God that" you are the same people who shove chemically-enhanced, hormone infested McDonald's and frozen food into your pieholes everyday; drive V8's and V6's cause your asses can't fit into an economic vehicle or, God forbid, ride a bicycle; pop pills to control the diabetes and cancer you give yourself and pollute the world with your poisonous ignorance and incompetence. The only ones that I (and MILLIONS of others, FYI) see going against Nature or God, is YOU! Not the transgenders, gays or any other being who was born different. Can't wait until the masses discriminate against your kind, I'll be the first to throw stones :)

  32. automaticsystematic says – reply to this

And another thing, I bet all those people have the Matrix on DVD and talk about how awesome it is–so eat that, hypocrites! Wachowski movies rule, especially Bound!

  33. Brian S says – reply to this

Thank you for posting this brave, amazing speech, Perez. What an inspiration Lana is. As far as I'm concerned, she never needs to discuss her personal life again. She did it on this night, and the video will live far beyond then. I'm glad we live in a world where understanding and acceptance is on the rise, and where the people who espouse a hate borne of ignorance and fear are becoming the outliers.

  34. Emmy says – reply to this

Re: automaticsystematic – BEAUTIFULLY SAID! BRAVO!!! ((Applauding))

  35. 35

BRAVO Lana! what a great inspirational speech with humor & love.- you are a beautiful
person - inside and out- every living being deserves to be happy and no one has the
right to judge! Shame on all the people out there that judge! I wish you would do more
speeches- this one was great-loved it and you! I am glad that you are happy and what
    great parents you have!!!

Thanks Perez for sharing this, It was the 31 best minutes. Lana you made me laugh and cry, love and peace from Panama

  39. 39

Hi Perez :) This was so inspiring and well spoken I felt I had to leave something for Lana to (hopefully) see. Then I read the rest of the comments and felt compelled to respond. I know and respect that we all have a right to our opinions, but I will never understand how so many bigots are tortured with the inability to listen. Regardless of your opinion on the politics, this woman spent 20 minutes sharing a story of a tortured life where she nearly committed suicide and all some of you can think to write is negativity? I feel as though you yourselves do not have children or young people in your life who you fear losing over torment and bullying. I hope you never have to gain perspective the hard way. It breaks my heart to think of how awful it must be for children who do not have that love to get them through and to accept them once they accept themselves.
So, for any of you LGBT reading the awful comments written by ignorant bigots either on this page or anywhere - I am straight. I am Catholic. And I am SO sorry that there are awful people who take the words of a loving saviour and turn them against others for their own bigoted notions. Know that there is at least one person who saw this inspiring speech, thinks she is amazing and strong for sharing her experience and who respects her for who she is not what she's done. Thank you Lana <3
