R.I.P!!

Dennis Avner, the world record holder for most body modifications, was found dead Monday in Tonopah, Nevada.

The 54-year-old, known to most by his Native American name "Stalking Cat," is believed to have taken his own life, though a cause of death hasn't been officially released.

A former U.S. Navy sonar technician, Stalking Cat was famous for having had extensive cosmetic surgery to adopt the likeness of his totem animal, the tiger, in accordance with Huron traditions. His body modifications included a split lip, labret-based whisker-holding implants, dental surgery, and silicone injections. He was also extensively tattooed.

Shannon Larratt, blogger and friend of Avner, writes:

"Dennis’s boundary-breaking life was never an easy one, and as he was fond of saying, he 'found fame, but never fortune.' A wonderful and complex person, he was at times as troubled as he was remarkable."

Now his troubled soul has found rest.

Were sure Stalking Cat is purring away in Kitty heaven!

Dear Perez, this article violates internationally recognised standards of journalism and professional ethics. The Associated Press Stylebook provides guidelines for journalists reporting on transgender people and issues. This breach has been formally reported. According to the AP Stylebook, reporters should "use the pronoun preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite (sic) sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth. If that preference is not expressed, use the pronoun consistent with the way the individuals live publicly" (see AP, New York Times & Washington Post Style). Stalking Cat's body modification choices may differ from your own or seem 'extreme' to you, but that does not excuse you from following journalistic standards of professionalism such as referring to her using the pronouns that she expressed publicly during her lifetime. As a psychologist, I am aware of evidence that this kind of disrespectful and inaccurate coverage harms people's well-being. I would encourage you to familisarise yourself with international standards before covering any trans-related news stories in the future. Journalistic professionalism is particularly important when you are unfamiliar with a topic or when you are covering life choices that seem 'extreme' from your personal vantage point. Please be more professional and accurate in the future. Thanks.

    Y. Gavriel Ansara, while this is true, this particular instance is a slippery slope since Dennis' modifications were considered to transform him into a female lion, not female human. In that case, it would seem his sex to be considered lioness. Due to this particular intention of Dennis, I find this article to not be as such offensive to the transgendered community. That being said, Rest in Peace Dennis!

Anyone to go to such extreme's is troubled. I hope he finds peace where ever he is.

Re: carey – Carey, it is important for people's pronouns and genders to be respected. Implying that it is okay to misgender people whose genders seem unusual is far more of a 'slippery slope'. Regardless of whether one uses species-specific language of one kind or another, Stalking Cat repeatedly identified her preference for female pronouns. Disregarding people's stated gender pronouns– regardless of their other forms of identification– is a clear violation of recognised journalistic standards. I also direct readers to the Trans Media Watch (TMW) Style Guide that is endorsed officially by the UK Press Complaints Commission (PCC).

How does a "Native American" have a totem animal such as a tiger? I would assume Native Americans would have bears, eagles, cougers, owls, otters, ravens, foxes, horses, etc, ie,…Native American animals………………………………………….he/she will be mist.

Re: Y. Gavriel Ansara – "this article violates internationally recognised standards of journalism and professional ethics. " You're funny, trying to use professional, journalism, ethics, and standards and PERVez in the same sentence is ludicris. He has NONE of the above. I'm sure one of the other "standards" include being truthful, not applicable as well.

As Shannon said Dennis was a good guy, I liked him, very personable man.

Re: Austin TX – "Anyone to go to such extreme's is troubled." not nearly so much as you imply. He had a vision of who he was and tried to live up to it. You people who have ZERO bodmod making judgements about us who do are ignorant and bigoted to the extreme. I believe his biggest "trouble" was "straights" unfounded condemnation of him.

It's so sad. After years of looking like that…it must have been tough to look in the mirror everyday and never see yourself. rip man
