| Filed under: TV NewsCarrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood will play Maria Von Trapp

How do you solve a problem like recasting Julie Andrews' iconic role?

NBC execs say the solution is simple… give it to Carrie Underwood!

The American Idol hottie is going to play Maria Von Trapp in a LIVE TV broadcast of The Sound of Music! We have to agree, casting Carrie is the PERFECT choice!

A big wig at NBC announced the big news, practically creaming his pants saying:

“Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp. She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist.”

Um… YEAH!

We are SO excited, we want to turn our old curtains into daywear and dance around!

This production is sure to be one of our favorite things… like, even more than whiskers on kittens!

Are they absolutely stupid? Maria is an acting role as much or more then a singind role. It is not country in the least…Maria is Austrian…um, she was a simple girl, a postulate…what else is wrong here? GEEZUS HOllywood! Get it together!

    Tony,

First, this is a brilliant choice to pick someone with an amazing voice and a wholesome image to play Maria Von Trappe.

Second, the original 1959 original Broadway version in which this is based was played by Mary Martin, an American actress. The movie role was played by Julie Andrews, an English woman - neither were postulates from Austria, you moron.

what Toni said; ugh. now i definitely won't be seeing it.

yuk. sounds like some cheesy lame TV movie. Can this bland bitch even act or does nobody care about such small detail? And if she's gonna keep her accent then…just forget it!!

Carrie Underwqod is the perfect Maria Von Trapp. She has a flawless voice and is the kind of person that will perfectly fit the role.

Hey Lasqueesha, you talk like some pig from the streets. I would rather be bland than speak like a dirtbag such as your self.

Re: Toni – Carrie has already proven herself in singing Sound of Music in the past– and there is no country twang in her rendition. She doesn't have much twang anyway- never did.

Re: Lasqueesha – Carrie is not a "bland bit*h"- hater. She is a great person with an awesome personality and she got good reviews for her acting on How I Met Your Mother.

She deserves a fair chance before everyone bashes her. Unreal.

NO,NO,NO…….REALLY BAD CHOICE .I watched a video of her singing The Sound Of Music……it was so flat(not note wise ) no feeling. She's has a good voice but she should stick to what she knows….country!!!! TWANG AND RIFTS WON'T WORK IN THIS PRODUCTION.

  15. 15

    What the eff… NO!

Re: gilliandawe91 – I agree that movie should not be remade. Plus the way I remember it Maria was sweet and innocent. I don't know, I just get that bitchy vibe from carrie, she also lacks genuine emotion.

Umm is Maria all of a sudden a country singer from America? lol

If they want a young pop/country popstar to play Maria they should pick Delta Goodrem! At least she is from Australia and has a great voice and very wholesome and pretty

  22. 22

I'd rather see Clay Aiken or Fantasia in this role! At least they have some experience on BROADWAY!!! C'mon! Carrie Underwooden…y'all! That's just stupid. Pay your dues!

NBC is going to try to redo The Sound of Music? Giant facepalm.

  24. 24

This is going to suck! The Sound of Music is the greatest musical of all time. WTF???!!! NBC has lost their minds!!!! How can you "remake" perfection???? Carrie Underwood has a very annoying voice and is not anything like Maria. OMG. What a horrible idea!!!!!!!!

  25. 25

Re: CaritaDeCleopatra – I totally agree. Carrie is hardly a sweet Maria type. She wears too much make-up, high country hair, and is such a flashy stuck up witch. Hardly Maria worthy at all.

Well I've seen Carrie live a couple of times and she sings rock, pop, country and she does it flawlessly. Big hair country girl? DUH that's WHO she is but she isn't going to be playing HERSELF in this and I think she'll do excellent!
