What could possibly have made Jon Stewart quit The Daily Show?
"I had, before taking [the job], some conversations with the powers that be there about the direction I thought we could move the show….
I wanted it to be satirical in the classic sense of the word, not the Spy magazine sense of the word where you just add adjectives like ‘pepperpot’."
But it didn't go quite as planned. Jon says:
"What I did not realize is, a lot of the people who worked there were a–holes…
I walk in the door, into a room with the writers and producers, and the first thing they say is ‘this isn’t some MTV bulls–t’…. And then I was told not to change the jokes or improvise."
Jon called his manager, begging him to get him out of the job, but was eventually talked down. Thank goodness he stuck it out!
In fact, he had to stick it out for over two years before finally getting a staff that was totally supportive of the show's new direction.
And a dozen Emmys make a great "I told you so"!
