President Obama Addresses The Connecticut School Shooting; Watch HERE!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooBarack ObamaSad Sad

Friday afternoon, President Obama addressed the nation in light of Connecticut's school shooting.

Only a few sentences in, Obama began to weep as he wasn't only speaking as a President, but as a father…

It was truly a moment that pulled on our already broken hearts.

Watch the speech (above) and then read some highlights from his address …AFTER THE JUMP!!!

"We've endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years. Each time I hear the news, I react not as a president, but like a parent. And that was especially true today. I know there's not a parent in America that doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do. The majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10. They had their entire lives ahead of them. Birthdays. Weddings. Graduations. Kids of their own."

"Among the fallen were also teachers. Our hearts are broken today for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these children and the families of the adults we lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents for the survivors as well. For as blessed as they are, they know their children's innocence was taken."

"As a country, we have been through this too many times. Whether it's [here or a movie theater in Aurora], these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods and these children are out children."

"And we're gonna have to come together to take action."

"Michelle and I are going to hug our children a little tighter and remind them how much we love them. But there are families in CT that cannot do that tonight. I will do everything in my power to help."

"All of us can extend a hand to those in need. To remind them that we are there for them. That we are praying for them."

"May God bless the memories of victims."

I live so close to Newtown Everyone here is emotionally broken!! I glad to see the president wiping tears out of empathy for those babies and their families

I am not a fan of Obama, but I am glad he made this speech. It was a great speech, the only thing I wish he would do different is not having to read the speech. I feel like this was something that touches you to a point where you should be able to speak from the heart, especially being a parent. But again, I do give him props for addressing this and in a quick manner.

  5. 5

Okay, Perez. You showing an ad before the President's speech on a day like today is too much. Sickening, really.

    6

I watched that as another Obama performance
I don't believe anything this man says
When he was in New Jersey after Sandy, he also made a very touching speech
but did little more than that, a touching speech
Today people are under great stress, and holidays makes the stress even worse
He should correct the unemployment, forced healthcare, no budget in four years, N Korea shooting off missals, Iran with nukes
If he does not do something very soon, things can only get worse

  9. 9

Obama is an opportunistic asshole who speaks long before he should. Remember, Trayvon Martin could be his son.
    .
Re: Kamika – YOU grow up and learn to shut your fucking mouth, you dumb whore. Who the fuck put you in charge of what others should say? Kamika … you're probably a liberal neegah who voted that asshole back into office. Did you send that message from your free Obama phone?

Re: Pansy Hunter – I was about to write a really scathing reply to your moronic, sophomoric comment, but now is not the time. Instead of uniting as Americans, we have racist individuals like you trying to keep us apart. You are the cancer on this country, and what's worse, I think you already know that and delight in it. Prayers and thoughts with the victims and families of this tragedy.

Re: Jessica – Why are you trying to disseminate more hatred in a time of tragedy?? Have we not had enough horror and hurt today? Trying picking someone up instead of putting them down, or you are harming our country - to a much lesser degree - in the same way this very sick man did when he committed this travesty. Grow up and learn what it means to be a good human being.

  18. 18

wiping away tears, obama is giddy. remember what his chief of staff, NEVER let a good emergency go to waste. don't give away MORE of your rights people.

Some of you people should be ashamed of yourself. Every one of us, including Mr. Obama, feels genuine sadness at this horrendous incident and the state of our society. If someone can actually criticize Mr. Obama for "reading" his notes…they obviously have never attempted to speak cogently while filled with emotion. Stop this disgusting sniping…and pray for the families who suffered this loss…and pray for humanity.

    26

I just can't believe what this man is saying, not the actual words but the emotions and meaning behind those words. It seems a little forced or badly acted. All I see is a man reading off a prepared speech and trying to come across as knowing what those parents feel, you can't know till you actually do.

The school and Aurora theater shootings he mentions happen on "gun free" premises (schools via federal law and Aurora theater via their policy). As anyone who has ever been or lives in Chicago already knows, the city is a virtual gun free zone, if you're a law abiding citizen. Which the smart ones amongst us know he help to create.

His children are surrounded by armed security detail 24/7; so is he. My children (and yours) don't get that same luxury and he wants to take my rights to protect them?

Re: MacTX – Never mind what you think….it`s not about you.

  29. 29

Just because the President is wiping tears doesn't mean it's a fake performance. He has kids and I guarantee every parent that heard this story teared up a little or felt great sadness in their heart. It's so easy to think "that could have been my kids". And I know I can't help but tear up just thinking about the pain those parents must be dealing with right now.
It's not a time to criticize the President, it's not a time to talk politics. Right now we should come together and mourn these poor people. Jeez.

    Re: Stella HJones

The mothers and fathers who will never hold their children again are in my thoughts. I don't know what that must feel like and hope I never do, but I'd be d@mned if I give up my right to protect them without a fight.

  35. 35

Why be political at this moment. It was an AMERICAN who did this to his fellow AMERICANS and you are criticizing the president because his gestured felt forced and you have to fight for your rights???

    Re: teeter totter
I curse all the time on here, and they go through. But words like "feggot" and "neegah" (the way they're normally spelled) don't make it through. I don't know exactly what Perez's filters are, but from experience, certain terms or expression will typically get your commented not printed. PansyHunter is an idiot, anyway. I just had to let her know.

    Re: Stella HJones

If I don't defend our rights, they won't be our rights for much longer, this president saw fit to interject his disdain for the 2nd amendment into his condolence to the american people and as a defender of the constitution, it is my duty to oppose such acts. He helped steer Chicago to the crime haven it is today as senator and he's well on his way to doing the same with the country as president. You do realize that defense of our constitution applies to both foreign and domestic threats, right? I'm not naive, I know he has no real power and the people he surrounds himself with are who are to blame.

  44. 44

Re: oceania6 – I'm sorry last time I checked religious Republicans founded this country. I'm sure Obama is sincere in his speech. But honestly that isn't important. This is the time to be praying for those families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. My heart breaks for them. So instead of everyone being hateful we should keep these families in our thoughts and prayers.

  45. 45

this isnt a natural disaster its some psycho kid gone crazy with a gun just like the psycho kid with a gun in colorado

someone is breeding psychos… and giving them guns then people die

Crocodile tears. This man is a horrible president and not very nice. He's wiping away non existent tears.
And why did he have to read this "speech". This was a catastrophic thing-why night speek from your hear.
Next he will ban guns and put in another layer of government to "protect" us. BTW, I have never owned a gun.

  47. xt says – reply to this

    make gun ownership illegal

  48. 48

Re: losalamitos – 20 children have been tragically murdered. You're a partisan hack and a sick f*ck.

  49. 49

Time to discuss banning the senseless ownership of assault weapons by private citizens.

  50. 50

…also time to discuss free mental health careto those who need it instead of cutting services and sweeping the issue under the rug. To many tragedies… enough is enough.

Give the pre-election tantrums a break and FOCUS your so-called anger tantrums on every syllable the president makes on preventing the next massacre on OUR SOIL, OUR COUNTRY!! Damn, how hard is it to move to Canada or Siberia and see how well they'll accept your crying tantrums?? This was terrible and could have been prevented. May those innocent children R.I.P.. I felt Obama's heart break for he's a father and so am I.

marc i dont need your stupid comment you can keep it to your self
President Obama. I urge you to do something about gun control. I've done my part in rallying for you among my friends and families to re-elect you. Now, it's your time to stand up to NRA and the Right Wing neoCons and do something about gun control. by that i mean FOCUS ON YOUR COUNTRY
Americans have to decide that we deserve to live in a society that is better than the violence plagued one we currently have. We have to want better…live better…do better…be better

  56. 56

Theres 305 million Americans. 250+ MILLION guns. Over 90 MILLION gun owners. In 25 years we have had 7 mass public shootings involving 10 men. 10 people out of 90+ million in 25 years went on a shooting spree. A psycho will be a psycho. Making the majority suffer because of .000001% of them did something horrible isn't the way.

Re: Pansy Hunter – wow!! Evil. I really don't know why I read comments on these sites regarding tragic events because I know there is always going to be someone like you leaving a comment like you did that gets people angry and distract from the real reason we all came to this site. The tragety of the shooting. Why did this happen, how could it happen, senseless violence all because someone was not right in the head. And they always shoot themselves. As a father of one, I feel for the victims families although having never gone through anything like this I can't imagine how you go on after something like this. There is so much love when it comes to your kids. I hope for their sake they can remember and celebrate the love and life they shared. As for the president, no matter what was said and how he said it, they were kind words and heartfelt words and that (in my opinion) is all that matters. Also for the ones that said "freedom of speech" be careful that you don't just think of yourselves.

You were successful with me. You got me to comment on your hateful comment distracting me from the real tragety. One that involved little helpless and defenceless kids getting brutally murdered.
