Have you seen the lowered standards of music today? Taylor AND One Direction are both subpar on their good days. What people consider their 'talents' are mediocre at best. With society as systematically dumbed down as it is now, it's not that hard to become number 1. In the sea of crap that music has become, one doesn't have to be the diamond anymore.
