Despite Obama's Speech, White House Maintains That Marriage Is Not a Federal Issue (Bullshizz!)

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayPolitikBarack ObamaSad SadLGBT

Marriage is everyone's issue, because there are humans out there not getting equal rights reflected by the government (be it federal or state). If you love humanity, this is your issue.

Obama's inaugural speech yesterday blew us away, especially when he spoke about gay marriage in a way that filled the community with hope and pride. Unfortunately, the White House seems to be less adamant about granting a right that everyone should have.

If you don't recall, the President said that:

"Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law – for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."

Seeeeeriously, that's amazeballs!

Enter White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, who is becoming the nation's largest c*ckblock. Here's what HE said when asked about it:

“The President’s position on this has been clear in terms of his personal views. He believes that individuals who love each other should not be barred from marriage. He talks about this not about religious sacraments, but civil marriage. And that continues to inform his beliefs. We have taken position on various efforts to restrict the rights of Americans, which he generally thinks is a bad idea."

He echoed this again, later:

"As you know, and I can make it clear, the president’s personal view is that it’s wrong to prevent couples who are in loving, committed relationships and want to marry from doing so. The values that the President cares most deeply about are how we treat one another, and respect one another. For him, it just boils down to treating others the way that we would want to be treated ourselves and the President has made it absolutely clear that his views are about civil marriage, as I said, not religious sacraments."

We can feel that we're right on the cusp of some really great changes in this country. We just wish someone, like our President, would stand up and do something drastic to make sure that gay rights are recognized just as much as any other rights out there.

It's disappointing to hear Jay talk like this, and it kinda puts a downer of a note on the President's speech!

Equal rights for all!!

It would be great if the President could do something but it is an issue that is decided by the States not the Federal government. If the President tried to make a federal law then it would get struck down as unconstitutional if it managed to get through the Legislature. Yes an amendment would be great but that won't get through the legislature either. Wait to see what the Supreme Court rules later this year. Yes waiting sucks and it's not fair, but you have to let the process work otherwise every time a new group or party gets control of the government, they could change things at will.

Yeah because gay marriage is just so much more important then ohhh i don't know….starving children in the US? Children not getting a proper education in the US? Healthcare? Our troops over seas getting killed every day? Or hell maybe we should be working on equality for the Native Americans who still live on reservations and have to drive 15 minutes just to get a couple gallons of water every day because their land is so desolate you can't even drill for wells on it. But yeah lets worry about a bunch of dudes that want a slip of paper. Yea real great agenda you fuckin sack of shit you only care about yourself.

When are people going to learn that Obama gives speeches, but doesn't commit to their actions or meanings. This is the same guy who said he would help immigrants and then looked the other way until Election Day came around. He's about as authentic as Beyonce's "live" performance of the National Anthem.

Perez, do you think that polygamists should be able to legally marry?

I say LET US gossip. If Ceaser Milan is not yet an American Citizen as he freely ADMITS he is not then this IS the scoop troops… Your POTUS is trying to getting his american citizenship by virtue of marriage. NOT happening.. Good!! The Hodge Rules!!

We all got played by that sexy president, OMG. We need to stand up LGBTQ community.

  10. 10

I disagree with what Perez understands from that statement. It seems like he is trying to clarify the difference between a religious sacrament (marriage) and a legal bound union (marriage)….and how the president's views are about LAW not religion.

  11. 11

POTUS didn't even want to have this discussion until Crazy Joe Biden opened his big mouth. He used the gay community for votes and now is leaving you out to dry. I am not surprised and hopefully others will see that this man should not be president.

  12. 12

For those of you that think the President lied about his feelings on Gay Marriage: Wrong, he cannot just do an executive order to make it legal! If he did that, then the next President could do the same thing making it illegal! It must make it's way through the courts! Marriage has always been a state issue, not federal. It's basically up to the Supreme Court at this point. They will do away with any and all laws prohibiting gay marriage! Anytime the Supreme Court has heard any case regarding marriage, they have voted on the side of marriage! Look it up! Equality is right around the corner!

  13. 13

Re: CrankyGranny – Tell me what polygamy has to do with this subject? We don't want to marry more than 1 person, just the person we love! Define marriage as a union between ANY 2 people! That rules out polygamy!

  14. 14

Are you SERIOUSLY NOT smart enough to understand that campaign speeches, election speeches and innugural speeches are a bunch of HOT AIR??? They are empty promises to get someone elected. Empty words for what is supposed to be a "feel good, historcial event". They reflect how that perosn thinks or feels but NOT how government will most likely be able to operate. It is the overenthusiastic and hopes of the politician. Words mean next to nothing - only actions mean anything. And as much as you may want to believe it, marriage is NOT a federal issue and it is NOT the primary major issue this nation faces. While I am in favor of gay rights, it is not what should be a top priority seeing how our economy is right now, and has been for a good 8 years.

Anyone who believes anything that obama says is stupid and misinformed. Actions speak louder than words. This president has done nothing but make celebrity friends.

  16. 16

Re: Toy4Paco – Asking about polygamy in the context of gay marriage is very appropriate because the entire issue of gay marriage is about redefining the concept of marriage. Your argument is about "TWO people getting married". Okay, but then that begs the questions: what about 2 brothers? A father and a daughter? An aunt and a niece? 2 cousins? etc. So polygamy is a very valid question because if the issue here is that "love is love", then why can't 3 people be in a committed and loving relationship? Why can't 4? Why can't a loving couple marry another loving couple?

When the question arises about changing the traditional definition of marriage, then all variations of that tradition are on the table for discussion and possible, legislation.

  17. heather says – reply to this

Also if you are going to use the argument of redefining laws that can lead to other things with that paranoia America could have never evolved. What if that was the thought back when race was an issue? "well giving blacks equal rights could lead to trees having rights so we better just keep it the way it is just in case". Gay couples should have the right to marry just like straight couples, there are many benefits that come with marriage that are denied to gay couples. If you don't believe me look into active duty military members. They cannot bring there significant other with them to their duty station. That is absolutely unfair. A person who is willing to fight for the country cant bring his signifant other with them to their next duty station and obtain the same benefits a military spouse gets? (health insurance, spouse pay, separation pay?) that is absolutely and entirely wrong and just horrible. And don't give me a pathetic excuse about choosing to be straight, why don't you imagine someone telling you you can never date or get married because society thinks its wrong? You want gays to just not date or marry? Just live sad lonely lives because you cant handle it? GROW UP!

When did obama say that??? I didnt hear any of that and if he did say it my ears always ted to clog up around the words "legalize gay marriage." God was the one who established the first covenant marriage well before America or any of the other countries and empires did, America should not be defining it just cause people's views of marriage change every few centuries. like god, marriage does not change. point blank.

Re: Ambassador4God – PBO has spoken many times about equality for all. you're online anyway so just go ahead and google what he has said and actually done for gay rights so you don't look so unprepared and misinformed next time you post your nonsense
Also heres a newsflash: fyi -in the USA we live under the constitution not the bible or whatever ancient patriarchal Christian 'sharia law' re marriage you're referring to. the SCOTUS will be ruling on marriage equality this year so fasten your hate belt fred/shirley phelps. I've the feeling you're in for a big let down :)

  20. 20

Told ya so suckers! Obama ONLY "came out" in favor of Gay Marriage to get re-elected… FACTS! He will and is now, betraying all he promised things to. You stupid F*CK Perez were to dumb to realize what a fake Obama is!

  21. 21

Re: whatupperez1 – Wait you voted for Romney right? so spare us the crocodile tears. republicans platform is for total INequality for gay Americans. and they blocked/filibustered every single immigration bill going back to when Bush was still president. they blocked the dream act several times in just the last 4 years and lied/fearmongered to teabaggers about 'ILLEGALS" .
Bohener and the house of tealiban are spending millions in taxpayer $ to fight Obama's dropping DOMA in a totally lame attempt to prevent gays from ever having marriage equality.
I mean y'all bitch when PBO signs executive orders then bitch about him when something doesn't go thru because congress wont pass it. LOL! caint make this stuff up!

  22. 22

    Re: Chris_Mc – *eyeroll*
psssst… um…this is re Obamas inauguration speech which means he's already been re-elected when he gave it genius. LOL!

Re: blackviolet – Me letdown?? There is no letdown huny, life, california and god are all good to me. I know what the mediocre president has said, the point is what he says dont matter to me. Maybe you should do your research and actually know the meaning of "sharia law " thats islam, boo boo, not christianity. the us was founded on christian principles, quit hating on people whose opinions differ from you're own.

  24. 24

Re: Ambassador4God – I'm well aware what sharia law is its just I dont see much difference in fundamentalist religions that incite bigotry other than what protects us from it here- the constitution. and unlike you- seemingly, apparently- i hate no one. I believe all are created equal and have the same rights under the constitution including the right to marry the person you love.
I just think there's very likely a special place 'you know where' for false profits- those who abuse the name of Jesus or whatever 'GOD' they believe in to spread hate and to justify their petty intolerances.

I KNOW this is a gossip site, but seriously FOLKS!! YOUR POTUS admitted to an ISSUE with his birth certificate BEFORE his expensive bash. I know what the issue is, HE IS NOT AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. IMPEACH HIM. AMH..

  26. 26

i hope you understand it's not jay carney blocking something… he gets his talking points and messaging from the president and his team. so if it seems like his messaging is that gay marriage isn't a federal issue, that's president obama's messaging as well.

  27. irvinegirl says – reply to this

The portion of Obama's speech on gay rights was aimed at bullying the Supreme Court. That's what he does. Smooth operator. He knows he doesn't have the votes on the Democrat side either to carry any legislation on the issue.

Re: blackviolet – How can you call Jesus a false prophet?? and calling me and other religious people bigots is really "non-hating and equally thinking" of you. You should read up on at least some basic knowledge in religion esp. christianity if you plan on critizing religious people so ignorantly.

  32. 32

Re: Ambassador4God – didn't call Jesus a false prophet I called YOU one. you're free to think whatever you want and I'm free to call you out for what you've revealed you are thats the way this works. and dont assume anything about my religious views that would be a mistake. you hiding behind your mean-spirited, outdated, twisted version of Christianity (only leviticus) to justify your desire to continue legal discrimination that hurts real people in real life isn't at all Christ-like. seems to me if you were optimistic about your own life and at peace with your spirituality you wouldnt possess the negative energy to actively meddle in, discriminate against and prejudge other peoples lives just because they happen to have been born gay. what it does is demonstrate to the majority of Americans that you're really not very bright. so, its only a matter of TIME now - LGBT Americans will end up with full equality & sooner than you think too. meanwhile your ilk will continue to get smaller and less significant every day. and there's not a thing you can do about it… except wallow. tick-tock… :)

  33. Ambassador4God says – reply to this

I have never claimed to be prophet only a follower of JC permissioned by god from the word of the bible to spread the good news of his gift.

I have never assumed who and what you are only that you seem very prejudicial and very high and mighty. I expressed my personal opinion of which I would have the same if even if I were not christian, which I am allowed to do by this great nation of ours, as well as act upon by voting in the way I see fit, just as others who do support homosexuality do the same. It is not negative energy but the way our government works, It is called Free Speech.

Why do you think I would wallow about such things? Life goes on , I m happy regardless and I care less what a supreme court deigns legal or not, it wont force me to see a sacred marriage different from that of a man and women. l0

  34. Ambassador4God says – reply to this

You shouldnt mention Leviticus without knowing its true context within the bible, which you do not know because have not studied the bible and have attended church preachings because if you did you would know that no true christian lives in the way of Leviticus. When a christians accept the gift of JC dying for our sins, we are no longer bounded by the laws of Israel because all are sins are forgiven and the holy ghost is within us, instead we live by grace and follow the path of the new testament. Leviticus is there to show the world before JC came, that everyone was bounded by those laws and were punished by the wrath of god because there no else to take the punishment. Those who have not accepted Jesus are still bound by those laws because they have not accepted the gift, and if they die without doing so they will meet the judgement of those laws. IYF
