Fun. Owes Their Grammy Wins To Glee?!

| Filed under: TV NewsMusic MinutePerezTVGleeGrammysRyan Murphy

Obviously the boys of fun. have talent squirting out of every orifice AND have been in the music biz for YEARS, so their multiple Grammy wins last night are definitely warranted

BUT it wasn't until the kids on Glee covered the band's now infamous track We Are Young during a December 2011 episode that the single — which was actually released back in September 2011 — rose in popularity by 1,650%!!

THEN, with a little help from a 2012 Super Bowl commercial which used We Are Young as its soundtrack, the tune began tumbling out of EVERYONE's lips and became one of the HIGHlight songs of Summer 2012!

Ch-ch-check out the delightful Gleeky rendition of We Are Young off of Some Nights (above)!

Surprisingly, the peeps over at Glee were initially hesitant to include an "unknown" pop song in their show.

Glee music supervisor PJ Bloom said last year:

"Glee doesn’t break bands We celebrate existing pop success-that’s our core model."

But after warming to the tune, he sent it over to Ryan Murphy and, well, a year or so later fun. is garnering multiple Grammys!

Congratz, boys! And perhaps give a little credit where credit is due? LOLz!

First of all, that glee episode is NOT from december of 2011, and I feel like the superbowl commercial is really what boosted the popularity of that song. They don't need to give credit to the creators of glee perez -_____-

I think yes, maybe not fully (whoever sing it, it is very sticky), but partially of course! The popularity of the song is what it is for glee

That song was popular and all over the radio before glee decided to ruin it lets be serious

Glee ruined it like they do most songs. fun. won those Grammy's on their own with their own talent. They've paid their dues and have been working at it for a LONG time!

I said something similar last night. That song definitely wasn't popular before Glee covered it. The Glee version had way more downloads at first. And sorry, that Glee episode was most certainly from December of '11. "Hold On To Sixteen" Probably the only good episode of season 3.

Glee definitely helped bolster the song's popularity no matter what fun. fans may say. I remember before this episode, it was virtually unknown but afterwards, it started blowing up all the radio stations.

I don't think Glee had anything to do with their Grammy win. That's a little offensive to them and how hard they've worked. Also I remember the song before Glee.

Whether you like Glee's version or not, the song blew up after this episode was aired. Facts are facts. "It's Time" is all over the radio now and Glee covered it in Fall 2011. It is what it is, no need to be butt hurt

While Fun. earned the award on their own, many people might not have heard the song ("butchered", as you put it) without it being performed on Glee. I, for one, never used to listen to contemporary music. Glee covers introduced me to some wonderful performers and I have since added both the original cuts and Glee's covers to my music collection. And I'm not the only one. Never turn down relatively cheap publicity :)

Re: JessicaRe: Nick – yes!!!! i was thinking the same thing about imagine dragon "it's time". been jammin to it on the radio but heard it on glee a long time before. both versions great!

The single was almost completely unknown before Glee (it peaked in the 50's on the Billboard Top 100 and then subsequently dropped off), and after the episode aired, sales of the single went up by 1,650%. The song would never have been chosen for the Super Bowl ad if Glee hadn't brought it into the mainstream in the first place. The show sucks, but give credit where credit is due.

    Re: DK23

Not entirely true. It is true the song was unknown before Glee's cover. Glee's cover is what helped it enter the charts at #52 the first time (while they debuted at #12). By entering the Hot 100 the band slowly started gathering more followers and that's where the Superbowl came in and boosted the song into the success it has been.
