In the ongoing battle to get equal rights for same-sex couples, one major step has been made.
The Department of Defense has announced they will be extending some benefits to same-sex couples in the military which was a final move made by Secretary Leon Panetta before he departs the Pentagon.
Way to leave on a high note!! We
like LUV it!
So what benefits will same-sex couples now get?
They will have rights to joint duty assignments if both people are in the military as well as same-sex partners of service members being able to have a military identification card.
It may not seem like much to some, but it is serious progress!
The implementation plan for the new benefits will be issued in the next 60 days and will be placed into effect sometime between August 31st and October 1st.
And it sounds like there is more to come as Leon wrote:
“Our work must now expand to changing our policies and practices to ensure fairness and equal treatment and to taking care of all of our service members and their families, to the extent allowable by law.”
Exactly what we like to hear!
We are so proud of everyone who made this happen.
Let’s keep it going!!
