He just keeps digging himself deeper!

Rex Reed went on a New York radio show this week to defend himself against the backlash he created by poking fun at Melissa McCarthy's weight in the review of her new film with Jason Bateman, Identity Theft!

Everyone from Jenny McCarthy to fitness guru Jillian Michaels had homegurl's back since the film critic's nasty, personal tirade! We're THRILLED so many people rush to her defense!

Rex, for his part, wants the world to know he doesn't think obesity is a laughing matter.

He said:

"I have too many friends that have died of obesity-related illnesses, heart problems and diabetes… I have helped people try to lose weight, and I don't find this to be the subject of a lot of humor. I object to using health issues like obesity as comedy talking points. That’s what this girl does, this Melissa Manchester… She is crying all the way to the bank!"

Geez, he can't even get her name right!

Fitness is extremely important to us, but so is tolerance!

He has absolutely no right to hurl horribly personal insults at ANYONE!

Calling a person "tractor-sized" or referring to them as a "hippo" is disgusting! It's beyond comprehension!

Melissa is a HIGHlariously gifted comedian — we applaud her for being so comfortable in her own skin!!

He has the right to say what ever he wants, just like you had the right to tell a certain someone to stop acting like a f*g.

    He's absolutely right

  4. 4

His 'concerns' about her health should not be part of his critique of her work. Does he also mention in his movie reviews actresses who starve themselves, or actors who smoke?

Yet Perez has a site called "FitPerez" ? Isn't he PROMOTING fitness ? Doesn't Perez post pictures of the newest fast food fad loaded with calories and says it is disgusting ?
You can't have it both ways pig nose. Perez always seem to hop the latest "shame on you " bandwagon.
    Fraud.

it's absolutely true though. she's fat, end of story. wonder why you never see any elderly obese people? because obesity is directly linked to health issues, like the ones this Rex guy mentioned. also, i see you flinging insults about thin celebrities (faith hill, recently), and that's okay? but because of this whole stupid fat acceptance, it's not okay to say the same things about people with the reverse problem? talk about hypocrisy.
yes i'm mad. no i'm not jealous. i just think it's ridiculous that media for so long was telling us that thin is in and to be fat is to be frowned upon, but now its suddenly okay and the exact opposite. coming from an ex-fatty, i think that all people need to do is to put EFFORT into their health, and then we won't have these contests of who's beautiful and who's not according to sizes.

Why isnt ok to say Melissa is obese and then comment that Faith Hill is too skinny just a few posts later in your blog? Call a spade a spade….Melissa uses her fat body to be and stay successful just like Kate Moss (and all other models, singers and actresses who are really thin) did with Calvin Klein to become and stay rich and relevant. There is no difference in the two.

She's actually underweight if compared to the rest of the USA, fat-ass country.

  9. 9

Holy cow! I thought the picture was of Abby Lee Miller. Separated at birth?

  10. 10

Why is he telling her something she already know? I think she knows she fat…come on, she has to carry it around everyday. This dude should stick to criticizing her work as a actor and not about her weight.

  11. 11

She's fat. What's up with all the political correctness?! THE WOMAN IS OBESE. I mean I don't understand why it's ok for Melissa to be this way and not for Gabourey, they both need to lose weight and a lot of it if they want to celebrate their 50th birthday. That being said, it doesn't maker them bad actress.

  12. 12

Re: rosebud99 – So, so true! The cigarette, vodka, lettuce leaf and coke/H diet is still alive and well in Tinsel Town. Yet celeb weekly rags glorify bone thin fems as healthy. Celebs brag about their excersise/low fat diets yet insiders are keenly aware that shots and or snorts are the key ingredient to losing 30 lbs in a month.

  13. 13

She's funny. So was Chris Farley. Oh, wait………….

  14. 14

his comments make zero sense and zero relevance to mocking her. He certainly wasn't doing it out of love. If he was so concerned about media's portrayal of the human body does that mean he makes fun of all the underweight actresses? Does he even have time to review the movie?

He's right!! He can't speak the truth? Her weight represents everything horrible about this country. And the gaggy fat chick schtick is tired.

She is morbidly obese but also very talented. She is not healthy. Her next gig should be Biggest Loser.

  17. 17

not only is he correct but he should also comment on her abject meanness…she is a witch of humongous proportions…no one likes to work with her…she is a hateful bitch.

  18. 18

This is the most attention he's gotten in years.

    19

Perez, did you purposefully write : "I'LL BE THE BIGGER PERSON?" on her picture? Sly…. whose the douche now?

    20

Melissa makes a living off mocking fat people including herself. She is a sell out.

  21. 21

I liked her in Bridesmaids, have not seen the new picture.
OK she is overweight, I used to be also, although not that heavy (155 lbs at 5'2") but when I lost my job and was only able to eat 1.5 meals per day, I lost I lot, hope she never has to go through that.
If she wants to lose weight, she can do it on a gradual, health diet.

  22. 22

Perez, your scribbled words on the photo of her contradict your indignation in your posting.
Re: Rex- There's nothing wrong with feeling health is important. But rarely, does name calling and shaming actually motivate someone to change. Occasionally you hear of it, but more often, you just exacerbate the underlying issue and nothing beneficial is accomplished. He's just using obesity as an excuse to call her a nasty name because he can't be creative enough to express himself. Which is sad, really, for a writer. Pththbpbpbpb!

  23. 23

this woman IS morbidly OBESE. a heart attack waiting to happen. People who choose to remain this heavy are actively trying to commit suicide on the installment plan. Onr pound at a time. I'll give you that she "just cant" lose weight by herself. She surely has enough money to pay for band surgery out of her own pocket. since she chooses not to, she is choosing to die at a young age,,,suicide.

  24. 24

When people wish to read a review/your opinion (as a critic) on her performance in this movie, they don't give two squats about what you think about her physical appearance. I don't read critical reception if it has nothing to do with the actual topic at hand I wish to be critiqued.

  25. NE1 says – reply to this

    25

I love her, and have ever since Gilmore Girls, but there are times when I feel like she's going to be the next John Candy, and I hope she isn't.

  26. 26

shes a fat ugly pig …

  27. 27

You know what? She is overweight. She knows it. And had he written his review and in a little bit of a off topic something said something along the lines of "She's very talented but I do worry about her health because of her size and would like to see her become healthier" I don't think there'd be anything offensive. But to call her what he did? That's not supportive or helpful, that's just mean.

And as so many others said, he doesn't seem to concerned about some actresses who clearly don't eat enough.

  28. 28

His criticism of her weight, no matter how true, is not relevant to the review of the movie. A different forum should have been chosen. Isn't everyone, nowadays, free to do anything and everything (including overeating and commenting on it) they want without judgement? Isn't that the basic tenet of multiculturalism/acceptance? The culture of overeating is now part of what this country is, as sad as that may be (not judging though). LMFAO

  29. 29

She is awesome & people bagging on her because of her weight are just jealous. How bout Rosanne Barr? Chris Farley? 2 Fat people everybody loved. John Candy anyone? These nasty heffers are just jealous.

Drop dead Rex Reed,I never liked you before you showed your true colors, and I dislike you even more.Your an a–hole.

  31. 31

Long ago, I used to watch Merv Griffin show and he would have Rex Reed on it a lot.. I truly thought Rex Reed had died… I don't know what is wrong with him now? Dementia? Maybe?

  32. MikkiLee says – reply to this

    32

Yes she is fat but what does that have to do with her talent? She's an amazing actress point blank period. And last time I check Rex Reed is a fat ass too, so he should stfu. And all this talk about if she wants to live longer she should lose weight. I do agree that being healthy is the most important thing but saying that about her because she's fat is just rude. Nobody knows what her health is like. Skinny people get diabetes, high cholesterol and have heart attacks

  33. 33

Let's call RR what he is. A BULLY!

  34. noodlehead says – reply to this

    34

Rex Reed has been, and still is, a raging drunk. those that can, do. Those that can't—well, they become critics.

Good for her!! Glad to see role models and celebrities who ARNT unhealthly thin or underweight. This Big women is a hero! She proves you dont have to be twig thin to be famous. Shes proud of her curves so should everyone else. I see her and think she's more real than half the other celebrities we hear about. YOU GO GIRL

  36. 36

Everybody has demons in one way or another. Some people are too thin, obese, or addicted to this or that.

Just shut up, take care of yourself, and live and let live. It's great to be concerned for others, but all this criticism helps no one.

    Re: raypearson
Are you HER doctor? Do you know for sure she is unhealthy? You're saying everyone should be thin, and if they aren't they should be required to have surgery to become thin, to please you? Her weight/health, none of our business. The world is made up of many different sizes and colors and genders - should we not represent us all in media? Should we shame everyone who doesn't fit the surgically sculpted mold of the thin and beautiful?
