Someone OTHER than Joaquin Phoenix is calling BULLPOOP on award shows like The Oscars!

Before Midnight star Ethan Hawke recently expressed his distaste for the way movies are evaluated in America, and called box office gross reports and movie award shows "asinine" and "destructive!"

Ethan shares in the Spring 2013 issue of Gotham magazine, on stands Monday 2/25:

"People want to turn everything in this country into a competition… [so] it’s clear who the winner is and who the loser is. It’s why they like to announce the grosses of movies, because it’s a way of saying, ‘This one is No. 1.’ It’s so asinine… if you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace. Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it’s really destructive."

Well, he's got a point!

And just think about how much these Hollywood masturbation spectacles COST to construct! It's definitely NOT cheap… the gift bags alone are usually worth THOUSANDS!

But without shows like the Oscars, how will we know WHO is good and who totally SUX?! Will we have to simply judge for OURSELVES?! LOLzzz.

Seriously though, without the golden Os we would totally miss out on AWEsome events like a mega-musicals tribute!

Not to mention all the HIGHlariously awkward moments…

What do U think readers? Do U think award shows like the Oscars are destructive?

bullshit, these asswipes who denigrate their own industry, from which they make inordinant amounts of money, for doing NOTHING should all be thrown from that industry and go WORK for a living.

Re: raypearson – You sound just as bitter. If the industry can judge and criticize artists, why can't artists criticize the industry?

I think Ethan has a point. There are so many amazing movies with original scripts that do not get mentioned. However, sometimes the academy actually gets it right..like Crash from a few years ago.
And guess what?? I couldn't care less "who you are wearing" … I'll just wait for Joan and the rest of the Fashion Police to do a quick and witty synopsis for me.

I don't see any harm in off the cuff analysis of the excellence rubric that is supposed to define how movies are rated, and particularly as he's an insider in that industry…but perhaps Hawke should involve himself in the actual process armed with more pragmatism rather than nebulous resentment. The Academy supposedly uses specific parameters. Whoops, it's 'The Oscars' now. My take is that it's all about the benjamins and all of the accompanying lobbying in front and behind the scenes; and the who you know, along with the box office take and cultural receptiveness towards the film.
It would be a tough process to improve upon, with movies being subjective. Ethan should have at it.

Re: Ms. B Nice – Sorry I love the Oscars, think he is just mad because he did not get nominated. Been watching them since the 60's.
