We were SO excited when we heard that Barbra Streisand would be directing a remake of 1967 hit Gypsy, but it sounds like it won't be happening…

At least if lyricist Stephen Sondheim has anything to say about it!

An insider divulged:

The biggest roadblock in [Streisand's] way is Stephen Sondheim, the show's lyricist, who so far has withheld his permission for her to direct."

Babs — whose recent gigs include an Oscars performance and a starring role in The Guilt Trip — is determined to not only direct, but star as Mama Rose, in the remake of the classic comedy-drama.

However, the reboot won't be much without Steven's gorgeous music, but we have a feeling Barbra will be able to convince him!

If she's not cut out to direct the film, then who is??!!

OMG she is the perfect choice to direct! I mean, out of all the three films she directed, she gathered 14 total Oscar nominations. Plus, everyone knows, she will direct the film if she's not credited as the director.

Babs directed some of the worst movies. Stephen Sondheim need to protect his legacy…I really dont blame him, why mess with a classic…

There are many people in H"wood who do not like this woman and would refuse to work with her. She is notoriously difficult to get along with.

Re: Celezia – Can you enlighten us and name a few of these many people in Hollywood who don't want to work with this woman? I assume, by the tone of your authoritative post, that you -do- mingle or have insider information with these many people in Hollywood who do not like this woman, enough for us to know that you actually make sense. Curious minds wander, wonder, and want to know, so go.

Re: lacroix – Uh, no. You got your information mixed up. Babs did not direct "Heaven's Gate". She did, however, direct three films that have been collectively nominated for at least 12 Academy Awards. Next.

Re: Paciano – So explain this to me, if it's nominated that mean's it good…what about Nine? Try to sit though that one…

Ahem….the MUSIC is actually by the late great Jule Styne. The LYRICS are by Stephen Songheim.

Re: Celezia – ….and where do YOU get this information??? Barbra is extremely respected in Hollywood. She has maintained her stature in the entertainment industry for 5 decades. If she was not liked, she wouldn't be so relevant. I doubt that there is ANYONE who wouldn' work with her. Viva the GODDESS!

Barbra Streisad has been in poor voice for several years because she is lazy. The voice is a muscle that she does not seem to be excercising to sing well. lThere is no excuse for this happening, look at Barbara Cook is 15 years older and her voice is in pristine condition. Most importantly, she is miscast in the role. Barbra is too old now and ethnic for the role. Rose the character is not ethnic specific even though it was written by premier talent such as Bernstein, Sondheim and Laurents. This is a disaster waiting to happen. I hope it never happens.

Re: Tony Diaz – Uh, wrong. Every singer's voice on the planet changes as they get older. Yes, Barbra included. However, the beauty of Barbra is that she can STILL sing. Her higher register is diminished, but she has made up for it with her lower rich tones. Barbra WILL do "Gypsy" and she'll be swell! She'll be great!

Re: Tony Diaz – …also, how many 70+ actresses look as great as Barbra?! She will easily pass for Mama Rose's 50ish age category.

Gypsy is one of my favorite musicals b/c of Rosalind Russell's Mama Rose. I'm sure I can be won over when the final product is revealed it just makes me a little sad to see these classics remade. Willy wonka is anexcruciating reminder of how badly they can go and Johnny Depp is my main man.
